Miss Sutherland came to us in our sophomore year. Her unfailing generosity in giving of her time and her vast understanding of our problems and her in- terest and willingness to give sound advice are but a few of the contributions of one of the most dynamic members of our faculty. We shall always remember Miss Sutherland. From Miss Suther- land’s teaching of English we learned the essentials that made it possible for us to edit an annual and news bulletin. Any of our future journalistic undertakings will have as its basis the gram- mar and creative writing we learned under her. Not only because of our love and respect for one who goes out of her way to be helpful, but because of her untiring effort in making the 1948 edition of The Green Knight a reality, it feels honored to have been dedicated to Miss Catherine Sutherland, our teacher and friend. -4 4 Admintatratum DICKENSON MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL HOME ECONOMICS COTTAGE AGRICULTURE BUILDING SUPERINTENDENT Mr. James M. The National Beta Club Charter was granted to Dickenson Memorial High School in August 1939, and since that time, this organization has taken the lead in the extra-curricular activities of the school. The Beta Club is a National organization of high school students of America. The membership is based on the students scholastic standing. Only those stu- dents who have high scholastic records may become members. The purpose of the club is to encourage effort, to promote character, to stimulate achievement, to cultivate leadership qualities, to reward merit, and to encourage and assist stu- dents to continue their education after high school graduation. The main activity of the Beta Club this year was to sponsor a beauty contest to select Miss D. M. H. S. of 1948. The proceeds from this program ' are being used to pay a down payment on new curtains for the auditorium. It is open to all students who are interested in dramatics. This spring the Dramatic Club gave, as highlights to the year’s work, two one-act plays. One purpose of the Panel Discussion Club is to develop one’s talent for partici- pation in an intelligent exchange of ideas. It enables one to co-ordinate and test his own ideas as well as to influence others. In all discussions, unbiased informa- tion is sought for and thoughtful consideration given to divergent points of view. Also, this club is a means of supplementing one’s knowledge about the many current and historical subjects discussed. Those who proved themselves most competent in this group competed in county interscholastic discussion at the forensic meeting held in March. — 47 fa— BOYS’ GLEE CLUB First Row — Left to Right: J. The Future Farmers of America (F. F. A.) is the national organization for boys studing vocational agriculture in public high schools. It was organized in November, 1928, upon the foundation of leadership, character development, sportsmanship, improved agriculture, organized recreation, citizenship, and patriotism. Forty-seven states, including Virginia and two U. S. territories have state F. F. A. associations, each a part of the wide-spread national or- ganization. The first chapter at D. M. H. S. was organized in 1928, and since that time it has grown into one of the largest in the State. The organization sponsored two assembly programs this year as well as having an annual social function for members and their guests. -4 50 ) F. H. A First Row — Left to Right: B. Bise, T. Stanley, A. S. opened the season, as it did last year, by traveling to Richlands. We were defeated by this slashing team 18-6. The following week we journeyed across the Wise-Dickenson line to Coeburn. Mainly because we could not score in the pinches we were defeated 13-0. We finally seemed to round into shape for we won our first game by defeating Grundy 12-6 on their field. Our first home game was with Appalachia. We lost a somewhat disappointing game by a 19-6 score. The next week-end Grundy visited Clintwood but had no better luck than they did during their last encounter with us. Score 14-0. D. M. H. S. ven- tured into Kentucky to play a hard fighting Jenkins team and managed to win by a 7-6 margin. It seems that there ill never be anything but ties between the Clintwood and Meadowview football teams for at Abingdon we fought to another 7-7 deadlock, just as we did last year. Tazewell, the District VII champions, came to our home field for their first game ever to be played under lights in Dickenson County. We played hard but were outclassed and defeated 31-18. We finished the season by traveling to Wise. This was a very hard fought game in which the 8th District champs were almost beaten but they managed to eke out a 9-7 decision. % -•€{ 59 ! - BASEBALL First Row — Left to Right: C. Fleming, H. P. Mullins, G. Moore. Third Row — Left to Right: I. Stanley, C. Compton, J. Sutherland, J. Grimes, B. Fleming, H. Dotson, E. Lee. J. Mullins. Fourth Row — Left to Right: T. Mooney, C. Dotson, J. Steele, B. Fleming, J. Dotson, N. Webb, R. Mullins, B. Colley. The D. Nl. H. S. baseball squad plans a very successful ’48 season. Boasting 10 members from last year’s squad, seven of which are lettermen, this team should make a fine showing. In Jess Steele and Cecil Dotson we will have one of the most experienced and outstanding batteries in Southwest Virginia. Other varsity performers are: T. Mooney, Third Base J. Dotson, Second Base J. Sutherland, First Base R. Moore, Left Field H. Dotson, Right Field H. Remines, Center Field D. Kennedy, Center Field H. Phipps, Pitcher SOFTBALL First Row — Left to Right: Coach Skeen, J. Grimes, J. Brown, C. Neel, Capt. H. Dotson, G. Hill , A. Mooney. Second Row — Left to Right: J. C. Fletcher, B. Mullins, W. Dotson, C. Compton, C. Mullins. With only one holdover from last years squad, the softball team consisting of those students not participating in football, made a credible showing in the county schedule. Although not a winning team, no game was lost by a decisive score, and our boys were always a constant threat against the seasoned opponents of the other three county high schools. The team was sparked by our only veteran, Captain Harold Dotson, and the sterling pitching of “Lefty” Neel. With all players returning next fall a championship team is predicted. - 4 { 61 CHEER LEADERS Left to Right: Buddy Sutherland, Dorothy Davis, Rosa Lee Hawkins, Jane Sutherland, Maurine Fleming, Kay Frances French, Ed Fleming. Veterans of our cheer leading squad this year were Jane Sutherland and Rosa Lee Hawkins. The newcomers who were selected after much deliberation, proved to be very wise choices, as they all were cooperative and readily learned their duties. We are very proud of our cheer leaders who upheld our reputation by always showing good sportsmanship and displaying courtesy to our opponents. - 62 y ywjwpu ■rnsnsA Cumberland Chevrolet Sales Corp.
