Others have been enrolled in other schools, many have gone to defense plants and some to the armed forces. Our class has two new students this year: George McFall, a returned veteran from the E.T.O. , and Allene Stanley, from Grundy High School. We regret the loss of four students: Harold Rose, John Whitt, Gladys McFall and Joyce Priode. We predict a large graduating class in 1947. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY Of 120 freshmen, we entered into the Sophomore Class with 83-- 36 boys and 47 girls. We have lost 8 boys and more girls. In September we elected the following officers: President, Doyal Kennedy; Vice President, Harry Lee Strouth; Secretary, Gerald Childress; Reporter, Beatrice Miller . We expect the greater number of the class to enter in the Junior Class in the fall of 1946. We have had a happy and eventful year as Sophomores. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY It was a very happy group of 127 girls and boys who assembled on August 7th as high school Freshmen only to have our fondest dreams banished when we were informed that we were not in high school, but in the eighth grade, due to the 12 year system that is now used in the State of Virginia. After this disappointment we were quite willing to be shoved around in our first few weeks of confusion. In September we organized our class as follows: President, Thayne Counts;. Vice President, Frances Dotson: Secretary- Treasurer , Vivian Fleming; Reporter, Billie Sutherland. Our year has not been too eventful, and has dwelt more with classes than anything else. Now we eagerly await the fall of 1946 when we will really be a part of the high school as Freshmen. The Seniors are jealous because we have so many more in our class than they do and so will not let us put our names in the annual. u tete i f vily Softball Boys ■witieteesi Basketball Girls 4u s tee i jftsdf ilxr- D.M.H.S. COUNTY SOFTBALL CHAMPS The Softball Team of D.M.H.S. won the County Championship this year with- out the loss of a single game. Due to war-reduced transportation, we played a shortened schedule, which called for six games, including a home and a home series with each of the other three schools of the county. In the first game we defeated Ervinton 8-2 at Ervinton. The highlight of this game was Jess Sutherland’s home run, which went with his 2 other hits for a perfect day. We met Haysi here and defeated them with a thrilling 6th inning rally for 5 runs. The final score of our second victory was 6-2. We met Ervinton again here and completely routed them with a 9 hit, 14 run game, in which they got only 4 hits and 1 run. Because of a mistake the next game in our schedule, which was with Haysi, was not played. In our final games of the regular season, we played a double-header with Clinchco, one of the games having been postponed from the first of the season. In the first game we took a thrilling, 11-inning, 2-1 victory, the winning run being scored by A1 Stone. We took the second game 6-1, with Red Hibbitts our steady- hitting, third baseman sparking our scoring attack. In the semi-finals of the tournament we beat Haysi 7-1, with Duck Sutherland setting the usually heavy-hitting Haysi team down with 2 hits. In the tournament we defeated Ervinton 7-2, with Jackie Hamilton adequately filling Red Hibbitts’ shoes at third and coming up with several beautiful plays. Robert Baker had the best day at the plate, with 2 for 2. He started one and sparked the other of our batting attacks that netted us our 7 runs. BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS Our boys basketball team of ’46 has a record of which the school is proud. After dropping the first game of the season to Ervinton no school was able to out - score them for the remainder of the season. This is the second consecutive year that the D.M.H.S. boys have won the championship. Four of last year’s champions are on this team. With the season nearing the close, the boys have just chalked up their ninth consecutive win. They were slow in developing their plays at the beginning of the season and then there were some coadhing difficulties that made it a little hard for them to get started. However, in the end, they were ranked as one of the top teams in the county and gave the county champions a hard game in the tournament. D.M.H.S. boys placed three of the five on the team — A1 Stone, Jack Hamilton and Cecil Dotson. The girls placed two on the all star team-- Nina Lee Mullins and Jean Davis, forward and guard respectively. Evidently there was pretty good picking on the part of the principals for the picked stars whipped the best that could be garnered from the other schools. -4u vetee t Mjcs Agriculture Boys AUTOGRAPHS ADVERTISING ’nineteen: levity dixs COMPLIMENTS OF Dr. Mrs. F.
