Senior Class History June 14, 1961 was a memorable day in the lives of fifty-two Dexter High Senior graduates. When the traditional graduation march, Pomp and Circumstance began, four years of high school had reached their climax. ln 1957, one hundred and seven uninitiated members of the class of 1961 entered the long corridors of Dexter High School. As Freshmen, we entered with the distinction of being the largest class in the history of Dexter High School. We were assigned to five rooms: Mrs. Blake's, Mr. Bodwell's, Mr. Hutchinson's, Mrs. Hutchinson's, and Mrs. Page's. During the third week of classes we were initiated by the satanic Sophomores. Upon entering the Sophomore class, our ranks were somewhat depleted to a mere eighty-seven members. Our class officers were: Ronald Dearborn, President, Richard Robinson, Vice President, Gail Castonguay, Secretary, and Linda Eaton, Treasurer. Upperclassmen finally. We entered the Junior class full of enthusiasm and ambition. The year of 1960 proved one of our best. Our number of students had been diminished to a mere sixty-seven upon entering the Junior class. The officers of the Junior class were: Ronald Dearborn, President, Richard Robinson, Vice President, Gail Castonguay, Secretary, and Linda Eaton, Treasurer. The third day of school we received our class rings showing them off with pride to the underclassmen. Mr. Vickery and Mrs. Slater were home room teachers for our Junior year. Under their leadership we progressed with great strides during our third year of high school. Elected to the National Honor Society were five Juniors: Ronald Dearborn, Richard Robinson, Sharon Parker, Kerry Crosby, and Frances Sherburne. After the Christmas parties, came tryouts for prize speaking. Four girls and three boys were chosen as finalists. The winners ofthe finals were Sharon Parker and William Allen, first place, Kerry Crosby, second, and Anna Sensick, third. The Penquis Prize Speaking Conte-st, held at Dover-Foxcroft, proved very success- ful with Dexter winning the Penquis League Plaque. Bonnie Blake and Anna Sensick both attained first place, receiving medals. Mr. Vickery and Mrs. Slater are to be commended highly for their diligence and patience in coaching the speakers. Delegates chosen for Boys' State were: Peter Mealey, Kerry Crosby, and Paul Williams. Darlene Larson and Anna Sensick were chosen as Girls' State delegates. We were especially proud of Ronald Dearborn who was elected President of the Maine Association of Student Councils at the State Convention in November 1960. ln the fall of 1960, fifty-two seniors were assigned to Mrs. Hammond's and Mr. Mealey's home rooms. New class officers were elected as follows: President, Richard Robinson, Vice President, William Allen, Secretary, Gail Costonguay, and Treasurer, Linda Eaton. The seniors sponsored a Football Dance crowning Barry Crocker king and Charlene Nightingale, queen. The senior play, You Can't Kiss Caroline, was a decided success. Anna Sensick portrayed Caroline , Paul Williams, was Joe , Sharon Parker, as Miss Jameson , and a cast of other performers. The seniors of 1961 are deeply indebted to our teachers. They gave us strength, understanding, and an incentive to strive for the best. Anna Sensick 4
