Among the qualities most sought are humility, sincerity, and friendliness. To you, Mrs. Ruth Blake, we ascribe the virtues of the wisemen. Your quiet ways have mani- fested true friendship, your patience has displayed under- standing, and your humility has revealed a comprehension of life. ln respect for these qualities, we dedicate the 1961 SIGNET to you. When the traditional graduation march, Pomp and Circumstance began, four years of high school had reached their climax. ln 1957, one hundred and seven uninitiated members of the class of 1961 entered the long corridors of Dexter High School. As Freshmen, we entered with the distinction of being the largest class in the history of Dexter High School. We were assigned to five rooms: Mrs. Blake's, Mr. Bodwell's, Mr. Hutchinson's, Mrs. Hutchinson's, and Mrs. Page's. During the third week of classes we were initiated by the satanic Sophomores. Upon entering the Sophomore class, our ranks were somewhat depleted to a mere eighty-seven members. Our class officers were: Ronald Dearborn, President, Richard Robinson, Vice President, Gail Castonguay, Secretary, and Linda Eaton, Treasurer. Upperclassmen finally. We entered the Junior class full of enthusiasm and ambition. The year of 1960 proved one of our best. Our number of students had been diminished to a mere sixty-seven upon entering the Junior class. The officers of the Junior class were: Ronald Dearborn, President, Richard Robinson, Vice President, Gail Castonguay, Secretary, and Linda Eaton, Treasurer. The third day of school we received our class rings showing them off with pride to the underclassmen. Mr. Vickery and Mrs. Slater were home room teachers for our Junior year. Under their leadership we progressed with great strides during our third year of high school. Elected to the National Honor Society were five Juniors: Ronald Dearborn, Richard Robinson, Sharon Parker, Kerry Crosby, and Frances Sherburne. After the Christmas parties, came tryouts for prize speaking. Four girls and three boys were chosen as finalists. The winners ofthe finals were Sharon Parker and William Allen, first place, Kerry Crosby, second, and Anna Sensick, third. The Penquis Prize Speaking Conte-st, held at Dover-Foxcroft, proved very success- ful with Dexter winning the Penquis League Plaque. Bonnie Blake and Anna Sensick both attained first place, receiving medals. Mr. Vickery and Mrs. Slater are to be commended highly for their diligence and patience in coaching the speakers. Delegates chosen for Boys' State were: Peter Mealey, Kerry Crosby, and Paul Williams. Darlene Larson and Anna Sensick were chosen as Girls' State delegates. We were especially proud of Ronald Dearborn who was elected President of the Maine Association of Student Councils at the State Convention in November 1960. ln the fall of 1960, fifty-two seniors were assigned to Mrs. Hammond's and Mr. Mealey's home rooms. New class officers were elected as follows: President, Richard Robinson, Vice President, William Allen, Secretary, Gail Costonguay, and Treasurer, Linda Eaton. The seniors sponsored a Football Dance crowning Barry Crocker king and Charlene Nightingale, queen. The senior play, You Can't Kiss Caroline, was a decided success. Anna Sensick portrayed Caroline , Paul Williams, was Joe , Sharon Parker, as Miss Jameson , and a cast of other performers. The seniors of 1961 are deeply indebted to our teachers. They gave us strength, understanding, and an incentive to strive for the best. Anna Sensick 4 PRINCIPAL MR. PHILLIP R. MEALEY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MR. HECTOR HEBERT GUIDANCE COUNSELOR MRS. RUTH S. Our class officers are Joey Wilson, president, Charles Batchelder, vice-president, Sherry Hughes, secretary, Shirley Crocker, treasurer. All the Juniors wish to congratulate Janet Blake, Joan Clukey, Shirley Crocker, Sherry Hughes, and Jeanne Rollins, who were elected to the National Honor Society. In October twenty-two Juniors took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. This test serves the need of guidance personnel in advising high school Juniors regarding their college plans. In December all Juniors took the California Occupational Interest Test adminis- tered by Boston University, and on March eighteen Juniors who are making plans to go to college took the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which is similar to the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test. We were assigned to rooms 15, 16, 17, and 18, with Mr. Russell as class adviser. At our first class we elected Shelley Starbird, president, Martha Tillson, vice-president, Gayanne Larson, secretary, and Sharon Flynn, treasurer. , The Sophomores had more fun than we did at the Freshman Reception. Some of the most effective stunts included rolling garlic, feeling worms, eating' goldfish, and playing air-raid. As a money making proiect we held a record hop in the spring. How proud we were, too, when Mr. Hutchinson's room won the scholarship plaque. Among consistent high winners this year have been Martha Tillson and Shelley Starbird. We also are proud of Rusty Clukey's excellent record on the basketball tearn. Congratulations Rusty, for winning your basketball letter. We are very happy to welcome all the new students from Garland and Ripley, Lorraine Gray from Clifton. We would like to thank all the teachers who helped to make this first year a very successful one. We welcomed a new director this year, Mr. Robert Cullen, who has very successfully developed our musical talents. During the football season the band played at Greenville and Bucksport and supported the team at all home games. Seniors in the band whom we will miss next year are Peter Mealey, Frances Sherburne, Joyce Edgerly, Sharon Parker, Harry Harrington, Jimmy Grant, and Duane Young. ln the spring of 1961, the band had a very busy schedule. They played at the Eastern Maine Music Festival, May 13, in Waterville, provided a total of nineteen members for the composite band which performed at the Penquis Music Festival, May 6, 1961. A team which was supposed to win no more than half of its games according to pre-season predictions finished the season with a 6-2 record, winning the Penquis League Title and being surpassed in the LEC by only the state champions, Orono, and the powerful Bucksport team. The season opened at home with a 20-12 win over a much heavier Stearns' team. In this game, as in several others, the Tigers proved that team spirit is more important than size, especially on the gridiron. After a 26-7 loss to Orono, the Tigers bounced back with a 27-0 win over Bar Harbor. After successive wins over Hampden, 30-13, and Lincoln, 42-12, Dexter posted a Penquis Victory over Greenville, 41-6. The Tigers then went to Bucksport where at half-time they led the Bucks by a score of 14-6. However, during the third quarter the Bucks' weight advantage took its toll. The light Tiger line found it impossible to stop the 225 pound Buck fullback before he had advanced into their secondary. The Bucks ground out yardage for two touchdowns and added another in the late minutes of the game for a 26-14 victory. Still determined to have a successful season, the Tigers settled down to a steady week's practice in order that they might win their final game for Coach Holsapple. Word was around that Dover was primed for a slaughter of the Dexter Tigers. On Saturday afternoon, however, it was evi- dent that the red and white had not heard the rumor. The Tigers emerged victors to the tune of 46-7: Dover's only score coming against the Tiger second string. Although team effort is the key to football success, individual effort cannot be discounted. Tony Hall, high scorer for the team with 67 points, was recognized as a halfback on the All Eastern Maine Team, as well as a first string halfback for All Conference. Captain Dick Robinson was also named for All Conference as well as quarterback for All Eastern Maine. Dick was a defensive standout, also, with 76 tackles accredited to him for the year. The defensive leaders, how- ever, were Galen Wintle and Kerry Crosby who made 83 tackles apiece. Wint, an All Conference tackle, received mention for All Eastern Maine. Kroz, our defensive linebacker and fullback, was mentioned for All Conference. Barry Crocker, an All Conference center, was elected football King and reigned with Queen Charlene Nightingale at the Annual Football Dance. The graduating senior football players wish to thank Mr. Holsapple and his assistants for their continued efforts in our behalf over the past four years and' to wish Captain-elect Greg Clukey and the team a successful season for 1961. Tournament hopes ran high in Dexter as the Tigers began their season with two impressive wins over Newport and Hampden. After a mid-season slump the Tigers roared back with two wins over highly-rated Schenck. During the latter half of the season, the Tigers' victory over Dover C68-725 could be attributed to tremendous desire, hustle, and overall spirit from the fans and student body. After a resounding defeat at the hands of Greenville, the Tiger quintet bounced back with two impressive wins and assured themselves of a Tourney berth. For the first time in nine years, Dexter appeared in the Tournament and drew the top seeded Orono went on to represent Maine as New England's class L champions.
