Our athletic teams earned district titles, conference champion- ships, county trophies and an impressive number of individual honors. Academically, DHS students con- tinued to rank high on college entrance ex- ams, and national testing programs of all types. A high percen- tage of our graduates go on to do well in col- lege and find success in their chosen fields. Thousands of dollars in scholarship money is awarded to graduating seniors each year. The DHS faculty is among the best in the State. School organizations continue to excel. Our band, choir, and clubs brought home many high honors. These and many other ac- complishments give us the right to say that 1986 was truly “The Year of the CAT.” 1 n n EM BEARCATS KltjHf EM BEARCAT § B r MouQH Anri 1986: The Year of the CAT in Red and Black Miss DHS: The CATS’ “Meow Julie Shipman was chosen Miss DHS 1986. Balancing gracefully upon a T-top was a duty enjoyed by Miss DHS and attendant Becky Christian. David isn’t the least bit shy about kissing a beautiful girl like Julie. The roses were red, their smiles were true, and they were proud to represent you. The Royal court consists of attendant Becky Christian escorted by Chris Rimel, Miss DHS Julie Shipman with escort David Christian, and Lisa Banken on the arm of Keith Talkington. 5 The Year of the CAT With Class and Charm Fall Homecoming 1985 Kellie Blankenship reigns as the 1985 Fall Homecoming Queen. Referees had a hard time controlling the game due to the enthusiasm generated by the cheerleaders. Juniors and their coaches make plans to sabotage the senior defense. 13 The Year of the CAT: Friends and Fun Vikki Is Band Queen Senior Vikki LaBrot reigns as Band Queen this year. She is a four-year band member and serves as secretary of the Band Council this year. Vikki plays clarinet and is a rifle corp- man. Other school activities include Student Council and FBLA. Dexter High School’s first Prom King and Queen were the senior steadies, Lyle Allen and Chantel Fields. They were selected by their classmates to reign over the prom. Prom-goers danced the “Southern Night” away to the rock of “Cafe Racers,” a band from Memphis. Crossing the bridge into “Southern Nights” are Senior Travis Dean and his date Angela Ward, a freshman. The Senior Class is known for its lovely ladies. Living up to this reputation are Lisa Banken, LeAnn Bowles, Kathy Tate, Sarah Kilmer, Molly Derryberry, Sue Rockenmeyer and Julie Shipman. 26 Prom ’86 gave handsome guys and pretty girls like Brian Miller and Ann Marie Cook many opportunities to smile for the camera. Qeniors '86 The Classiest Act of the Year I remember what it was like to be new around here, the place seemed a little bigger then, and though 1 never admitted it, a whole lot scarier! I remember searching the hallways and stairways and auditorium filled with unfamiliar faces, hoping to find someone to share my confusion with and feeling so grateful whenever anyone smiled. For awhile, I wondered how I was ever going to fit into this strange, super- sophisticated world, but now I wonder what I was so worried about — the confidence came — and so did the fun! What an assortment of unforgettable characters I’ve met here! There are classmates I liked from the start and those who took a little getting used to. There are teacchers I love and teachers I survived. But most of all, there are good friends I’ve made here and all the together times we share. I remember times we won together, times we lost, times when we worried together, and times when we celebrated — but how do you say thanks for a mind-full of beautiful memories? I remember autumns when all the excitment in the world flashed between two goal-posts, winters warm with the glow of freedom, and long lazy summer vacations when not doing anything was our favorite group activity! Looking back I’m amazed that so many crazy and colorful things could have happened to me! I only know that wherever I go, whatever I do, the days I’ve spent right here will always be a really special part of my life. A time to remember! When the band marched, you were there You held that rifle with pride and care. A little orange “Bug” was just your style Laughing with you made our trip worthwhile. When it came to work, we counted on you McDonald’s and friends knew you to be true. Pretty red hair and eyes so green Brightened the face of our high school scene. We will look back and always remember A girl with a heart so warm and tender. As we go forth to a future year You’ll live in our hearts so precious and dear. Someday in time when our lives are gone We’ll greet you in the Heavenly Dawn. By: Julie Shipman on behalf of the Senior Class of 1986. Dear Classmates, We have had an exciting but busy year that has included everything from taking photographs in the rain to sweating out every deadline. We thank Mrs. Dowdy for her advice on journalism and on life. We appreciate the assistance of Joe Craig and Associates (Skip- per) and the staff of the Daily Statesman. Special thanks go to Mrs. Hastings for allowing us to traipse through her class on the way to the darkroom. We speak on behalf of our fellow staff members in thanking all of you, the students of DHS, for helping us to make this “The Year of the Cat.” Good Luck! We Love ya! Editors, Susan and Connie NHQ: The Leaders of Tomorrow Members of National Honor Society must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and receive a vote of confidence from the DHS faculty. Membership is based on quality of leadership, character and school service. Only 15% of the senior class is eligible for membership. 10% are selected during the spring of their junior year and 5% are chosen the next fall. Membership into this organization is a high award and the students selected feel very honored to represent their school and community. Mrs. Betty Irvin and Mrs. Rosemary Patmore are the advisors to the group. Officers include Larry Sandage, Presi- dent; Brian Miller, Vice-President and Chantel Fields, Secretary. Members include Nicole Massarat, Carol O’Dell, Brian Miller, Mike McGill, Molly Der- ryberry, Chantel Fields, Larry Sandage, April Isbell, Julie Shipman, Brian Hinton, Keith' Talkington, Keith McDonald, Phillip Garner, Scott Ezell, Susan Solidum, Tracy Tibbs, Kathy Tate, Lisa Banken, Paula Douglas, Myra Smith, Todd McGhee, Tom Jarrell, Julie Dube, LeAnn Bowles, and Vikki LaBrot. Nicole Massarat looks through her lab book before starting the experiment. Larry Sandage measures out a solution for a Chemistry II experiment. 172 Todd McGhee proves that he is a victor. Vikki LaBrot carries her rifle proudly as she marches. Did Mrs. Holifield say that my last test grade was less than acceptable? Myra Smith tries to prepare a solution as charming as her smile. Mike McGill is a full-time NHS student and a part-time film developer for the school yearbook. April Isbell and Lisa Banken anxiously look for names that they have misspelled in the BEATCAT. 173 174 175 G. Darrel Cole A Man for All Seasons IF If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, not deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools. Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, or Walk with Kings — nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With Sixty-seconds’ worth of distance run, Your is the Earth and everything that’s it, And — which is more — you’ll be a Man, my son!
