Rhonda Tucker: A Credit to Her Qchool Miss DHS 1985 is not just another pretty face. Senior Rhonda Tucker is a National Honor Society student, part- time cashier at Town and Coun- try Supermarket, the president of the student body, the co- editor of the yearbook, and ace centerfielder on the Lady BEARCAT softball team. Rhonda’s pretty face and organizational skills are also a part of FCA, Pep Club and COE. When she finds a spare moment, Rhonda likes swimm- ing and camping. Senior Mary Rahm was first attendant. She was escorted by classmate Jeff Banken. Molly Derryberry, a junior, was escorted by Brian Miller when she was named second attendant. 4 Molly gets everything mixed up in chemistry. Mary tells another one of her incredible stories to the enjoyment of Rhonda and Molly. Mary feeds herself as well as the senior citizens at the STUCO turkey dinner. As STUCO president, Rhonda helped to raise money for the senior citizens’ dinner. Rhonda chose one of her best buddies, Chuck Fowler, to escort her on her big day. 5 6 Celebrate the Spirit 7 A Powder Puff Celebration Long Live King Trey! If it’s “Spirit Week,” it must be time for Powderpuff Football. That’s when girls wear jersies, smear paint on their faces and act real tough. On Tuesday, October 3, the female football contingent at DHS were all psyched up to rip up the turf at Charles Bland Stadium. However, as the final buzzar sounded, the only ripped items were a few fingernails and a few false eyelashes. AT LEFT: Powder Puff King Trey Parsons smiles proudly as Senior Julie Poetz gives him a congratulatory hug. LOWER LEFT: Senior Scott Hastings was happy to be the first atten- dant to Trey. In case King Trey should pose for any questionable magazine, photo, Scott will take over his duties. Scott's escort is Senior Rhonda Tucker. BOTTOM LEFT: Freshman Aaron Pixley was chosen second atten- dant. His escort was Tara Woods, also a Freshman. The 1984 marching season did not produce many awards for the BEARCAT Band, but was, according to Director Michael Clippard, “very successful in many ways.” The band completed a busy schedule which included parades for the Charleston Contest, the Sikeston Cotton Carnival, the Stod- dard County Fair, Veteran’s Day and Christmas. A highlight of the year was the SEMO Homecoming Parade in Cape Girardeau which was televised on KFVS-TV. During halftime of BEARCAT football games the band performed before an enthusiastic hometown audience. A real crowd-pleaser was a spirited rendition of Irving Berlin’s “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” performed by a Dixieland combo. A reorganization of the SEMO Marching Association put DHS in competition with larger schools. Nevertheless, the BEARCATS marched away with a trophy in street competi- tion, missing first place by only a slim margin. An unusually wet fall caused several cancellations, but the BEARCATS perservered and proved once again that they were a talented group of young musicians. 49 Auxiliary Groups Add Dash to the Band Twirlers are Brenda Wilson, Kay Worley, Mol- ly Derryberry, Patricia Stephens, Chantel Fields, and Jane Riley. A Celebration of Harmony The 1984-85 school year has been busy and suc- cessful for the Acappella Choir. During the fall the choir traveled to a choral festival in Jackson. Also, in November the choir performed the musical, ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ which was about teenage lifestyles in the 50’s. In December the choir was invited to West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau at Christmas. During January, February, March and April the choir prepared for District and State Music Contests. The choir received their fourth consecutive “1” rating at district and several members went on to state competi- tion. In May the choir ended the year with a pop concert. For the first time in the history of the music department, the girls’ choir participated in district music contest and received an “Excellent” rating. Many ensembles also were involved. The event, held annually on the campus of Murray University in Murray Kentucky, is attended by schools from the four state area of Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Illinois. Hundreds of high school juniors and seniors participate in a mass choir, accompanied by a string orchestra and directed by a renowned conductor. The DHS students chosen were selected on the basis of ability and leadership qualities. These students represent Dexter’s best in vocal music. The group includes Danica Colyer, Lisa Dowdy, Tammy Lang, Brian Miller, Angie Hector, Ann Marie Cook, Jamie Carman, Russell Rowland, Michelle Harper and Heidi Stause. 56 Chamber Choir Is New on the Music Qcene at DH9 The chamber choir began its first year of existence this year in the vocal music department. Sixteen students were selected on the basis of individual musicianship from the Acappella Choir. This yearbook would not be possible without the friendly, helpful people of Joe Craig Studio. Rhonda Tucker and Starla Williamson worked together as Co- Editors of the Yearbook 60 Often the tiny journalism cuticle could not contain the talents and enthusiasm of the senior publica- tion students. Connie Ellis’ major responsibility was the underclassman sections with all those teeny-tiny pictures. Starla put in many hours of hard work to make REVEILLE ’85 a great success. Mike McGill served as photographer and man-about journalism class. 61 Engineering and executing the BEARCAT newspaper this year were Susan Solidum, Tracy Dabbs, April Isbell, Lisa Banken, Kenny Eaton, Julie Shipman. Patty Keusenkothen and Danica Colyer take a break between classes. Sometimes Grant Medford finds an answer that reminds him of another question. When it comes to grades, Leslie Hampton believes “practice makes perfect.” 178 NHS: Academics, Leadership, Character and Qervice II 1 For well over half a century the National Honor Society has worked to bring the achievements of outstanding high school students to the attention of the community. Members of NHS must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and receive a vote of confidence from the DHS faculty. The teachers look for leadership qualities, high character and school service when choosing NHS members. Only 15% of the students in each class are eligible for membership. 10% are selected during the spring of their junior year and 5% are selected during the fall of their senior year. Mrs. Betty Irvin and Mrs. Rosemary Patmore are the advisors to the group. Officers include Yvette Patmore, president; Rick Miller, vice-president; and Mary Rahm, secretary. Members include Rick Miller, Russell Rowland, Joe Hunter, Grant Medford, Kenneth Eaton, Mike Koonce, Eric Mouser, Rhonda Tucker, Starla Williamson, Michelle Tillmon, Becky Duley, Cindy Hufford, Tracy Dabbs, Susan Barnfield, Karen Sedlacek, Tammy Lang, Patty Keusenkothen, Danica Colyer, Leslie Hampton, Mary Tuschhoff, Susan Rowe, Mary Rahm, Jill Wiggs, Leigh Ann Hall, Renae Peters, Patricia Stephens, Yvette Patmore and Angie Hector. Not pictured is Julie Poetz. 179 Julie Poetz can’t think without biting her tongue. The crowd is enlivened as the band beats out its electrifying performance. Christina Rahm begs Grant Medford to take it easy on her toes Class with a capital “C” is represented by Bryan Walters and Susan Rowe. Pretty girls and handsome boys abounded at the Prom. 180 Jeff Jarrell threw away his cane when he danced with Paula Douglas. Karen Sedlacek slips a “Jungle Love” garter onto Chris Halcomb’s arm. These junior girls make the drummer their center of attention during break-time. Richard Bergen and Jackie Turner drink a toast to their very special evening. 181 182 184 ■‘' £
