Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1984 volume:

Miss DBS Symbolizes the Spirit of Our School Being selected to the Miss DHS court is quite an honor. These young ladies represent the spirit of our school. They are not only beautiful; they are a vital part of the student body. They, like their fellow students, enjoy life at DHS. They are proud of their school and we are proud of them. At right: Miss DHS 1984 Jennifer Mouser sits atop a convertible waiting to ride down Stoddard Street in the fair parade. Jennifer is active in Varsity Band, FHA, FBLA, and Pep Club. Her hobbies include horseback riding, watching football games, swimm- ing, and playing alto sax in the DHS Band. She also enjoys being with her friends. “I feel honored and very surprised that I was selected to represent my school as Miss DHS!” Jennifer exclaimed. Bottom right: The 1983-1984 court consists of Miss DHS Jennifer Mouser escorted by Kevin West, First Runner-Up Molly Derryberry and her escort Brian Miller, Second Runner-Up Regina Clark escorted by Mark Schweiss and Retiring Queen Tracy Riggins ac- companied by Patrick Crawford. Page 5 — upper left: First Runner-Up Molly Derryberry is a member of Student Council, FBLA, FCA, and Pep Club. Molly also displays her sportsmanship as a member of the DHS volleyball and girl’s basketball teams. Molly said, “I was thrilled to even be nominated, but even more thrilled to be the first attendant.” Second Runner-Up Regina Clark enjoys her various activities at DHS which include Pep Club, FCA, and FBLA. Regina is a member of the Lady Cats softball team, along with being a cheerleader for both varsity wrestl- ing and football. She also enjoys camping. Miss DHS and her attendants not only have beautiful faces and winning smiles, but also enthusiastically join into stu- dent life through their activities in various clubs and organizations. Page 5 — lower left: Regina Clark encourages that good old DHS spirit, while leading the Pep Club Snake Dance during Homecoming Week. The game drew lots of participants as the girls took over the masculine domain of Charles Bland Stadium, tearing up the turf and each other at the same time. DHS males tried to bring some organization to the chaos in their roles as coaches, refs, and linesmen, but soon learned that the feminine gender could not be controlled when it came time for a real CAT fight. At left: Cheerleader Clint Fowler places the Powder Puff crown atop the head of David McKay. Bottom left: The Frosh-Junior team display the big Numero Uno sign immediately after their 7-0 victory. Below: Coach David at- tempts to explain to Jeri Richards a play but she just smiles and says, “Cool it, David, I’ll do my own thing.” At right: Freshmen Jeff Barker, Lee Parks, Scott Rice, Bill Keating, Tim Watson, Toby Watson and Darin Thurston stood around and looked pretty when they weren’t leading a cheer for their team. Middle right: Referees Jack McDonald, Mike Stites and Chuck Fowler saw no evil, heard no evil, and spoke no evil, but the girls on the field did all three. Bottom right: Renee Schwantes, Cindy Baker and Lori Sells flopped down on the ground to rest between plays. Far right: Todd Wilson, Damon Cartwright, Clint Fowler, Shannon Shipman and Chris Rimel may have lacked cheerleading talent, but they had lovely legs. Bottom far right: Building a pyramid is easy, but keeping it together is impossible. 8 9 o The 1983 Fall Homecoming Queen and her court are Second Attendant Susan Solidum and her escort Brian Hinton, Queen Regina Clark and her escort David Christian and first attendant Mary Rahm and her escort Reed Dillahunty. Retina Clark Reigns at Fall Homecoming Spirit Week was highlighted by the crowning of Fall Homecoming Queen Regina Clark. Her attendants were Mary Rahm, a junior and Susan Solidum, a sophomore. The coronation took place during halftime of the game against Jackson before a packed stadium. Regina was nominated by the varsity football team. Mary was a candidate from the volleyball team and Susan represented the girls’ tennis players The week leading up to the homecoming game was packed full of fun and games. These activities included a car stuff competition, a Powder puff game, Pyramid contest, jello snarfing and egg-dropping contests. Ending the week was a snake-dance. The line consisted of 200 peppy people who “jammed” their way through downtown Dexter to the high school. Members work the concession stand at all the home football games. The group acts as co-hosts with FFA’ers for the annual Barnwarming. The club also participated in Vocational Week during February. This year they sold Candy-Grams and held a “Slave Auction” to celebrate the week. Members organize and participate in service projects aimed at the needy and the handicapped which include toys, canned food and fruit baskets at Christmas and a March of Dimes Walkathon in the spring. Always ready to have a good time, the group had a picnic in the fall to kick off the year, a Halloween masquerade party, a Christmas bash and a spring outing to cap off a successful year. Members spent a part of the day observing the activities of various business men and women and professional people in the community. The Weed and Flower fund raiser at Valentine’s Day provided money for the trip to the state convention and the FBLA Scholarship. Fifteen members attend- ed the convention held in Jefferson City on April 26-28. Club President, Michelle Hinton, was elected the District Miss Future Business Leader. The Parliamentary Procedure Team of Michelle Hinton, Kim Smith, Martha Burnett, Patty and Steve Keusenkothen placed first in the district and fourth on the state level. Senior Martha Burnett placed among the top five FBLA members in Missouri on the written portion of the Parliamentary Procedure test. This entitled Martha to compete in the national finals in Atlanta, Georgia. The District FBLA Contest seemed to agree with Aaron Grobe as he displays his first place trophy in Business English II. 102 On Weed and Flower Day, Coch Wade finds out who his real friends are. Mike Koonce shows off his first place trophy in Accounting I that he won at the District Contest. Tammy Gaines and Becky Duley’s drawing of FBLA symbols won them a fifth place certificate at the District Contest. Kari, Carol Ann, Becky, Kim and Candy were among the winners at the District Contest. 103 AIASA Members Enjoy Active Year AIASA is an acronym for American Industrial Arts Students Association. The purpose of the DHS Pep Club is to provide spirit at sporting events and support our athletes. In recent years some of the “pep” has gone out of Pep Club. This year, in an effort, to bolster school spirit, the sponsors and officers worked hard on “Fall Spirit Week.” The week preceding homecoming was filled with activities designed to bring out even the shyest student in school. 106 Pep Club Officers are from left to right: Scott Stites, treasurer; David McKay, vice-president; Davi Boner, secretary; Su2y Yoder, president. to That Good Old Bearcat Spirit )X PlO U • Ccta P)rLopp in( lpl-- .SrwAr X ' 1 owticoioo, Ihschool. ■ ef SrnhcDaxe Dash ■ 'Bonf-irc V ? 3c wz . The band received first place honors in the street competition and a sec- ond place award for its field show at contests in Poplar Bluff and Charleston. The rifle corps and twirlers also accepted first place honors at Poplar Bluff and Dexter. Everyone cooperated except “Old Man Weather” who opened up and poured down on several other events including the last halftime show of the season which was flooded out. The bandsmen and their fans are proud of 1983 season. Director Mike Clippard and the 115 members of the Marching CATS can give themselves a great big “pat on the back” for a job well done. The 1983-84 field commander is Monica Moore. Assisting her is the drum ma- jorette, Elaine Wright. The two received a drum majorette trophy at the Charleston contest.
