Roy Sherfield. Tom Thrower (head coach). Boyce Woolcy and Don Jones. Coach Tom Thrower’s return as head coach of the Dexter Bearcats also marked the school’s first year in the tough Northern Conference. He brought with him a high powered offense which scored 211 points, good for third high in the conference. Although the Bearcats finished with a 2-8 record, it was a team which provided plenty of excitement for its fans. The Cats did well in gathering conference honors, as they placed Lance Espey and Mike Grubbs on the First Team Offense and Rick Guilliams on the Second Team Offense. Mike Yowell and James Hewitt (coach) IXI Don Jones took over as head coach of the Bearcats for the 1976-77 basketball season from the retiring Jim Hall and faced a rebuilding job from last year’s team. Although the Bearcats won only seven games, they were competitive in nearly all their efforts. The Cats’ major deficiency was that they lacked “the big man in the middle. Each time they went to the floor their opponent averaged being four inches taller. The final days were the highlight of the season, as the Bearcats pulled some stunning upsets. They beat a much bigger Jackson team 71-48, and in the Regional Tournament defeated a highly rated Caruthersville team 72-57. The season came to a close when they lost to a bigger and stronger Malden team—77-61.
