She has five preparations a day, coordinates the furnishings for the building trades house, and sponsors Future Homemakers of America. Mrs. Rankin is willing to change to provide a better education to the students. The Bachelor Living Class made its debut in 1974-75 under her leadership. Also in 1975, she assumed chairmanship of the Home Economics Committee for DHS' North Central Evaluation. In this role, she was responsible for leading a community and school evaluation of the home economics program. Dorothy Rankin has given many hours of devoted work to Dexter High School and its students. For this devotion, we would like to say THANKS. 13 14 Features ... special events ... the diary of a student's activities ... spirit week . .. powder-puff football .. . building a house .. . guest speakers ... Students can be involved in some activity every day of the week preceding the Homecoming Game and Dance. Spirit Week for 1974 was Oct. 7 to Oct. 12. Monday was Poster Day and Hall Decorating Contest for each of the classes with sophomores winning. Other activities of the week are seen on this page. The Homecoming Dance was held at Southwest Elementary on Saturday Oct. 12, 1974 to climax the week. TOP: Vickie Kandalaft, 1., and Nancy Tuley show spirit by participating in Greaser Day. Many of these surround the coronation of DHS queens. During September each class nominates two girls to represent them in the Miss DHS contest. The 1974 contest was held in the auditorium with only Juniors and Seniors attending. Toward the end of football season, the football boys nominate girls to represent them during Homecoming festivities. On Friday night, Joe Satterfield escorted Renee Hathcock as she was crowned queen by Diane Hodder. On Saturday night, Ezekiel played for the Homecoming dance. In January the annual Snowflake Dance featured the crowning of Kim Teets, senior. Attendants represented each of the other classes anc were Linda Ayers, Donna Rickman, and Lori Keirsey. Beta Sigma Phi sponsored the Miss Dexter Contest April 7. From a field of 42 DHS girls, three were chosen to represent the community. Queen, Susan Taylor is a sophomore and will reign over various community activities throughout 1975. DHS Band queen was crowned at halftime of the Dexter-Chaffee football game. Four girls represented each class and Rhonda Black, senior and queen, then reigned over the Band Dance in December. Land 20 Several DHS Clubs Host Special Events Each club at DHS hosts several special activities during the year. French Club invited Jannick Fosse to speak to its members and be their guest at a French dinner on April 3, 1975. FHA sponsored a Cerebral-Palsy Walk-A-Thon which raised over $1300 for the Cerebral-Palsy Foundation. Linda Belcher collected the most pledges and most money by completing the 10 mile trek. FHA also hosted the FHA Regional meet-ting. Approximately 250-300 girls attended. Skits, entertainment, and installation of new officers filled the day. Youth for Community Betterment is not a DHS club, but it is composed fo DHS students. On March 31, several YCB's combined with Student Council members to paint the fire hydrants in the downtown area. During Strawberry Festival Week, May 18-25, they sold strawberry designed stationery and used the proceeds to buy music for the Community Choir. DHS Highlights Include Food Tasting Banquet Michael Hardy's second drama production for 74-75 featured John Capps as the great astrologer Ptolemy in the play You Were Born on a Rotten Day. Many students acted in the play and many others created the spectacular stage setting which featured all of the signs of the zodiac. Early in the year, special activities included a Get Acquainted Dance sponsored by student council and a special performance by three DHS faculty members during the pep rally for football homecoming. Second semester world geography students invited a Para-gould, Arkansas teacher, Rachel Prince, to speak at the annual Food Tasting Banquet on May 15, 1975 at the DHS cafeteria. Mrs. Prince showed slides and talked about her experiences in India where she lived for nine weeks during the summer of 1974 as a Fulbright Scholar. Dorothy Rankin's fourth hour class prepared the food which included such dishes as sweet-sour beef, Mexican chicken, chocolate covered pretzels, and rosettes. 22 BELOW: Rachel Prince fits Eddie Phillips with a sarong from India. During May, each senior Art II or III student presented a one-man art show. Being a senior means making countless decisions. The seniors of 1975 chose their class motto, flower, and colors during one of their meetings, (See senior section, page 39). Later in the year, blue announcements were ordered from Herff-Jones representative, Charles Brandon. Beginning in December, students and especially faculty started the first steps in DHS North Central Evaluation. In preparation for the visiting committee in December, 1975, each department held periodic meetings in order to prepare a report on the curriculum. Also involved were several community members. The North Central Association is one of several accrediting associations for high schools in the United States. In preparation for the next school year, class elections for officers and student council representatives were held in May. A new student body president, Joy Smith, was elected on May 8. 24 BELOW: Part of the members of the Social Studies Department's NCA Committee review their report. Many Students Enjoy Roman Holiday9 The Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet was held Saturday, May 3 in the DHS gymnasium. The theme, Roman Holiday, was appropriately expressed with decorations including fountains, columns, a chariot, and a stairway to the Temple of the Gods. Upperclassmen enjoyed the evening meal of ham and its trimmings. Lori Keirsey, Junior class president, presided over the banquet and introduced guest speakers, Jay Lemons, Senior class president. Gene McCane, Dolores Stanislaw, and Lamar Hicks. The dance began at 8:00 with music provided by Hustut-ler. Many stayed well into the midnight hour enjoying the music and good times. The 74-75 Publications class voted to produce a yearbook that would be received in August in order that all spring activities could be included. Inflation hit the yearbook business; this year's Reveille cost $10. In light of the price, the staff decided to produce a 208-page book and include the color section. Last minute work on division pages, features, and index was not finished until the last deadline, June 7. Bearcat staff members produced their last issue. The Senior Bearcat, on May 22. New features in the 1974-75 Bearcat included a Christian Comment column and periodic fun pages. The Bearcat received third place honors in state competition with schools of comparable size. Dean Adkins won a first place in the cartoon division with a cartoon depicting the ancient condition of the old junior high. DHS honors students for academic achievement, sports participation, and attendance. Community organizations recognize citizenship. The Elks Lodge chose two students of the month throughout 74-75 honoring each with a dinner. On May 27, a banquet for all the students honored during the year was held at the Hickory Log Restaurant. Elks members presented each student with a plaque and also named Laura Chasteen and Bill Homer as Students of the Year. On May 22, the DHS awards assembly culminated the year's activities for students. All sports letters, scholarship awards, citizenship awards, and academic awards were presented. New National Honor Society members were recognized and one senior, Mickey Hughes, received a perfect attendance award. Seniors have achieved a great accomplishment, yet there is an air of sadness. Nevertheless, another year goes by and another class leaves the halls of DHS. The Class of '75 held its graduation ceremonies on May 22 with 133 seniors receiving their long-awaited diplomas from Loren Coffey, President of the Board of Education. Speakers for the ceremony included three of the graduating seniors; Speedy Shaver, Teresa Hahn, and Candy Poe. All three spoke briefly, recalling memories ana retiecting on the challenges that lay ahead of them. Gene McCane, DHS principal, announced class honors and a number of scholarships. Speedy Shaver was named as valedictorian and Candy Poe as salutatorian. The graduating class then joined together to sing the DHS Alma Mater for the last time before departing. It takes a lot of hard work to get in shape by the middle of September when the parades and halftime shows are scheduled to begin. Some work has to be done outside of school hours since the marching band is divided into two class sections, one at 8:30 and one at 9:30. Twirlers were chosen at the end of the last school year. Five of them attended twirling camp at Jonesboro, Arkansas during the summer. In addition, several of the band members attended band camp at Cape Girardeau during the summer. 123 Winter and Spring Are Concert Seasons Beginning in November, both sections of varsity band concentrate on concert music. D.H.S. musicians perform at various concerts and compete in several contests. The winter concert was given on December 16 and on May 8, they gave a spring performance. Twenty-four students received one ratings at district contest and went on to compete at state level on April 24 and 25 at Columbia, Mo. They returned with one three-rating and the rest were rated two. All varsity band members enjoyed a day out of school to travel to Murray, Kentucky, on April 29. They toured the campus and performed a concert for music majors. The D.H.S. Bearcat Varsity Band in under the direction of Howard Jones. 5er nban5 ™emb€rs are front rovv toP t0 bottom J. Garner, K. Considerable time, planning, and work was spent to make this convention a big success. Nine committees were set up to prepare the programs, registration, decorations, lunch, and various other details with each member playing a significant orle. Bloomfield High School served as Co-Host for the convention. Michelle Marshall, the 1974 Miss Missouri, and Dr. James Hamby were guest speakers for the occasion. Other activities included the distribution of food baskets and visitation to serveral rest homes in Dexter. At Christmas, Student Council decorated a Christmas tree for the lobby. Members enjoyed stringing popcorn and adding Christmas spirit to the halls of DHS. The council also sent five delegates to the State Student Council Convention at Riten-our High School in Overland, Mo. Twenty-One Seniors Initiated Into National Honor Society On December 11, twenty-one members of the Class of '75 were initiated into National Honor Society. Membership in the society is a great honor at DHS. Students must rank in the upper 1 3 of their class, have an S average, and be rated by the faculty on the qualifications of leadership, character, and service. NHS attempted to have an all-school carnival but due to lack of interest, the carnival was not held. A rummage sale held on April 26 proved to be a successful money-making project. National Honor Society used their profit to enjoy a trip at the end of the year. Darrel Cole, Bill Flowers, and Betty Irvin are advisors. 133 Many Pursue Future Careers The Future Business Leaders of America had a very active year. They constructed a Student Directory, broadcasted school news over KDEX, assisted with the March of Dimes roadblock, and also Missouri Education Week. The club also visited KFVS-TV, was involved in a parliamentary procedure workshop, and attended the District and State FBLA Conventions. Bill Homer received a one rating as Mr. FBLA in district and a second in state competitions. Miss Newcomer and Mrs. Stutts are FBLA advisors. The Future Teachers of America is sponsored by Mr. Hux and includes students who are interested in pursuing a teaching career. The Cadet Teaching Day was the highlight of the program, as members were dismissed from a day of school to student teach. On February 20 spectators were greeted by five sparkling beauties vieing for the title of D Club queen. At halftime of the game Danelle' Adkins, becamethe new queen crowned with a big bowl of shaving cream. Inside the cafeteria a freak show featured Peter Pan, (Jeff Merriss) who ate 60 spoonfuls of peanut butter, the Old Lady, (Randy Cooper) who ate 75 prunes, and the Fish Eater, (Greg Miller) who ate 42 sardines. Several members acted as bar maids, and babies, as cheerleaders, as the Supremes, and ballerinas. Seniors who were not on the 74-75 basketball team played the male faculty members with the faculty winning 69-58. Senior members who played were Mark Becker, Joe Satterfield, Jay Lemons, Gary Sedlacek, Dale Denson, Joe Alexander, Bruce Gant, Rick Williams, Tom Ramsey, and Dewayne Galey. Little interest was shown by members in making rules and regulations for attending sports events. Those members that did the work for Pep Club were the varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen cheerleaders. Only girls belonged to this year's organization. Pep Club's activities for 74-75 included sign making and decorating of the halls for each sports event. Both football and basketball homecomings were in the hands of Pep Club. Once again, members of Art Club sold candy at basketball games to raise money for their annual trip. This year Art Club took thier trip earlier in the spring in conjunction with FHA. They traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to shop and attend the Ice Follies. 139 COE Hosts District Convention COE students are busy every year with annual activities such as the COE film festival and the employee-employer banquet. Profits made from the concession stands at football games helped to finance a bus trip to Mamphis. FHA members enjoyed a day of shopping along with a Holiday on Ice show. The Future Homemakers of America took on great initiative by starting and being the main sponsor for the Cerebral Palsy Walk-a-thon. The project netted over $1300 and was donated to the Cerebral Palsy Fund. The Spring Regional Meeting was hosted here at DHS on April 5. Regional officers were elected after each FHA chapter presented a self-evaluation and skit. The annual Parent Banquet was held on May 5 with formal initiation of new officers. The evening meal was enjoyed among surroundings decorated with the theme April Showers Bring May Flowers. Mrs. Rankin and Mrs. Gould are the FHA advisors. FFA Adds BOAC to Their Activities A new project for Dexter Chapter of Future Farmers of America for 74-75 was BOAC, Beautify Our American Country. Under this project FFA members worked on the construction of Boone Park, a new park in the area of high school, and worked on the playground for the State Training School. On Saturday, May 10, members aided the beautification council of Dexter in a city-wide clean -up. Seniors Mark Clippard and Don Reynolds led the Cats in points scored and rebounds. Junior Mark Guethle improved steadily throughout the season, and he shared the rebounding award with Clippard and Reynolds. Tom Espey captured the defense trophy given at the annual basketball banquet March 6, 1975, while Mark Clippard received the freethrow award. January proved to be an outstanding month for the roundballers as they won all eight of their games. This record included their second place victory in the County Tournament at Bloomfield. Other impressive victories during the 74-75 season came against Sikeston and Jackson. On February 6, the Cats broke the Sikeston Jinx by defeating the Bulldogs 56-49 in the Sikeston field house. This was the first win for Dexter against the Bulldogs in their seven year old gym. Dexter defeated Sikeston to win third place in the tournament after being soundly defeated by Poplar Bluff the night before in the semi-finals. According to Coach Hall, the team showed great strength by overcoming their defeat and putting forth full effort against Sikeston. That third place victory started the Bearcats on a nine game winning streak which included the Poplar Bluff game. It was a big win for Dexter since the Mules had just defeated them in the Christmas Tournament. Coach Hall stated, That game at Poplar Bluff was the one big factor that allowed us to have a good season from a win-loss standpoint. It gave the boys confidence they needed to play good ball clubs. 174 1974-75 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL SCHEDULE DATE OPPONENT WON-LOSS Dec. 3 Malden L Dec. 10 Puxico L Dec. 13 Doniphan L Dec. 19 Charleston L Jan. 7 New Madrid W Jan. 10 Poplar Bluff L Jan. 14 Bernie W Jan. 17 Perryville L Jan. 21 Bloomfield L Jan. 24 Clarkton W Jan. 27-Feb. 1 County Tournament L Feb. 7 Sikeston L Feb. 8 Jackson L Feb.11 Richland W Feb.14 Cape Central L Feb. 18 Bell City L Feb. 21 Kennett L 175 Freshmen Post 7 1 Record The members of the J.V. At first it was thought that no home matches would be possible due to the condition of the mats, but during the last part of the season several matches were held at Dexter. The overall results of the season seem dim with only one win, but there were some outstand ing individuals. Dan McClintock won third at the Sikeston JV Tournament wrestling the 981b. class; Dan Molloy won third wrestling the 1381b. class, and Mickey Huey won third wrestling the 1451b. class. He also continued as athletic director. Coach Hall reached a milestone in his basketball career during 1975 by gaining his 200th victory. Counselors, Betty Irvin and Darrel Cole, began enrolling students somewhat differently in 1975. Students were allowed to choose their elective classes without being told that only so many sections were available. Then, only those courses with enough students enrolled will be taught in 1976. 192 Hux Receives Christmas Gift Teachers sometimes receive gifts from students, and sometimes those gifts are straight from the heart.
