STAGE BAND AND FRESHMAN BAND KEEP ACTIVE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR The stage bands activities varied from concerts for the general public to dances and concerts for the MFA farmers association-a successful year in every way and a year to be proud of. Each member performed well and improved as the year progressed. Playing music from a slow peaceful mood to big band sound to hard rock, stage band explored every phase of music written for this ensemble. Developing skills in improvization many students developed their own style and personal sound. Each year gets more exciting as the stage band members become more proficient and dependable. DHS Freshman Band participated more than ever in 73-74 playing at Freshmen football games and basketball games, as well as sponsoring an exchange concert with the Poplar Bluff Freshman Band. Other activities included marching in the Bloomfield and Dexter Fall Festival Parades, the Veteran’s Day Parade, the Sikeston Cotton Carnival Parade, and participating in the Marching Festival at Poplar Bluff. Stress The Total Student Physical education is providing an opportunity and motivation for each individual to develop total fitness with emphasis on physical fitness. The physical education program is based upon the abilities, needs and interests of the students. The music department at Dexter High School is one offering most anything a student wants. In the fall is the marching season for both freshman and upper-classmen. The bands are led by Mr. Howard Jones, and Mr. Mike Clippard. Mr. Clippard also teaches a class in theory, and conducts the stage band at Dexter. The Vocal music department offers a Concert Choir, for a serious approach to music, and the pop-choir for the lighter approach. In this department, as an extra-curricular activity, is a group known as “The Soul Swingers.” This group rehearses one evening a week with a rock band and presents several programs each year. Art is learning to appreciate the beauty and world around us. It is understanding that everything is art, and learning how to find good design as a consumer along with appreciation. Mrs. Carolyn Gould takes time out from one of her classes to read a book. Miss Jo Anne Newcomer takes time out from her busy day, to pose for the camera. Practical Arts Stresses Physical and Mental Coordination The business Education Department teachers teach the techniques and principles of business and secretarial skills in order to prepare the students to take their places in the world of business upon graduation. Potential white-collar men and those who aspire to be secretaries are steadily observing, figuring and compling. One of DHS’s most versatile departments is home economics which now offers eight courses in all phases of home making and also nursing and family health. In addition, look out for a new course to be added called bachelor living. 161 English Department Offers Many New Courses for 73-74 In the D.H.S. English department, 1973-74 has been the year of change. The English curriculum is now composed of elective semester courses. Instead of trying to do all phases of English in one class, students may now specialize in courses such as composition, literature, speech, creative writing, and other subjects which might interest them. Social Studies Department Uses The Inquiry Method Lamar Hicks represented the DHS social studies department at the National Convention in San Francisco during 1973 bringing home new ideas and news of the updating Fentons inquiry series used here. Two new faculty members. Dale Worley and Don Jones were introduced to the inquiry method. A panel of religious leaders and a panel of business leaders were among the guest speakers in Social Studies classes. Again closing the year, the International Food Tasting Banquet was bigger than ever. Assisting them in their work is a very efficient secretary, Peggy Matthews. Working along with the dietician, they prepare a nourishing lunch for many students five days a week, thirty-six weeks a year. The unsung heroes of DHS are the bus drivers. They put up with a lot of horsing around on their buses. Student janitor, Doug McDonald, is a big help to the other janitors. Cooks for 73-74 are from 1. to r. Bonnie Fairless, Lois Groves, Joyce Wamble, Betty Hester, and Melba Smith. Mr. John Hunsaker is shown here receiving the state janitorial award. Mr. Garence Davis takes a rest from his busy day.
