In the meetings the members discuss such things as money making ideas, plans to better the student body, and they pass or reject petitions from classes or organizations. The members attend the district and state conventions. They were the producers of a school film. The officers this year are: president, Don Jones; vice-president, Sue Dean; secretary, Vicci Medler; treasurer, Dawn Poyner; and reporter, Jackie Larsen. The club sponsors are Mr. Cole and Mr. Myers. - 29 - This Was The Year That Was!!! Junior girls look wide awake at the Notre Masque initiation breakfast. The National Honor Society These twenty seniors were chosen by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. To be a member so the National Honor Society is the highest honor a student may receive in Dexter High School. Cafeteria Custodian Staff - 32 - Fall Activities Fall Activities The most demanding activities of the Freshmen are learning new study methods. FHA earns money by entering a float in the Stoddard County Fair Parade. The annual FHA queen and her attendants ride on the float. FHA always has their informal initiation for new members. Each regular member has a slave for the day to wait on her hand and foot. - 34 - Fall weather is a perfect time for the students These people were elected celebrities of the day by the members of Notre Masque on initiation day. - 35 - Miss D.H.S On September 16, Miss Pam Fulbright, daughter of the Reverend and Mrs. Arthur C. Fulbright, was crowned Miss D.H.S. Miss Fulbright, a junior at D.H.S.f was chosen by a group of local judges to reign as Miss D.H.S. 1963-64. Pam was selected among eight lovely girls. Feature Editors Business Managers Janet and Brenda added many creative touches to the Reveille Arlene and Phyllis did a great job selling the Reveilles to the students. H. S. Copy Readers Andrea and Mary Jo are the staff's grammar experts. Bearcat Staff Exchange Editor Patty rushes every Friday to mail out the Bearcat. Sports Editor Art Editors Our sports editor, Sue Dean, is always on the spot to get the highlights. The artistic work in the Bearcat comes from the hands of Nicki and Phyllis. -39- The Student Library Assistants The STUDENT LIBRARY ASSISTANTS is a small, but important and helpful group. The students give their service in running movie projectors, acting as librarians during the study halls and decorating study hall bulletin boards. The student library assistants are: Brenda Farris. Ronnie Wilburn, Charles Hoffman. Peggy Jones, Carolyn Wilburn. - 40 - On Stage Everyone The Notre Masque is a club composed of talent displayed on stage by the members. Tne club had a breakfast fox the members and a supper followed by a talent show given by the new club pledges. The club also sponsors the Voice of Democracy Contest. The sponsor is Mr. Jarrell. The president is Karen Evans, the vice-president is Sara Dickirson, secretary and treasurer is Judy McCarver and the stage manager is Jeff Barbour. - 41 - Princess, I'm terribly sorry about the unhappiness all this has caused you - 42 - We've got lots of zis an zat The annual J unior-Senior Musical proved to be another great success this year with the production of the Merry Widow Mr. Wilson Jarrell produced and directed the operetta. The saying the show must go on was certainly no exception in our case. Betty Davis, our lead gal, was in the hospital during one performance. She was replaced however, by Brenda Lincoln. Also, Judy McCarver consented to fill in for Janet Roder-m a n. The Merry Widow When all the old established matrons decide what's what and who's who - 43 - Brain Specialists The F.T.A. club is one of the most outstanding clubs in our school. This club meets at least once a month, in the cafeteria, and is under the supervision of Mrs. Proffer. This year the F. T. A. has made plans to form a baby sitting service for the parents who have to bring their children to school activities. The main project for the year is the student teacher day when the students teach classes in the elementary, and junior high grades. This is a great help to the students who are preparing to be the future teachers. Tne president this year is Jeanie Morris, the vice-president is Janie Stuart, secretary is Sue Dean and the treasurer is Carol Whitmore. - 44 - The Future Water Boilers Of America Our F.H.A. organization has done many worthwhile things this year. Throughout the year F.H.A. has sent gifts to the rest home and had panel discussions. We, also, had a social for the fathers called Daddy Date Night and a Mother-Daughter Banquet. In March the members go to Memphis to see the Ice Follies and to do some Easter shopping. The sponsor is Mrs. Rankin. The officers are as follows: president, Carole Ringer; vice-presi- dent, Vicci Medler; secretary, Carol Whitmore; treasurer, Andrea Lind; parliamentarian, Sara Dickirson; song leader, Janet Roderman; devotional leader, Mickey Camp; reporter, Elaine Patillo; and historian, Phyllis Lively. Kay Hart, Judy McCarver, and Sara Dickirson were our regional officers. - 45 - Miss F.H.A Miss Betty Davis was elected Miss F. H. A. for 1963-64. She was elected by the organization of F. H. A. girls. The theme of the float on which the queen and her attendants rode was F. H. A. Gets Things Done. Betty is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Davis. - 46 - - 47 - Everyone Watch The Birdie ) The Shutter Club is a valuable club and we feel very fortunate to have it in our school since it is a great service to the publications class. They have just recently added a dark room to develop their pictures. They have a lot of very valuable equipment in the club which was bought by the classes of 1962 and 1963. The members are learning to take pictures in poses of different types and, also, action shots. They are learning to print and develop their own pictures. Mr. Ingles is the sponsor of the club and is quite an expert photographer. The president this year is Carl Tracer; vice-president, Phil Taylor; secretary and treasurer, Mike Dugan; and historian, Lawerence Wilson. - 48 - An Acre Of Soil, An Hour Of Toil There are many varied activites of F.F.A. This organization meets the first Monday of each month to discuss such things as the financial status of the agricul ture farm and its projects. Some of the F.F.A. activities have been the barnwarming, December 13; an agriculture trip; and the Missouri F.F.A. Convention. The officers are president, Richard Gant; vice-president, Mike Jones; reporter, Kenneth Shelton; sentinel, Johnny Dowdy; treasurer, Dennis Moore; parliamentarian, Ronnie Moore; and Louis Bader, secretary. - 49 - Anthony with his heifer. This year Dexter High School has cooperated with Southeast Missouri State College in their student teaching program. The students pictured on this page were first semester student teachers. They taught in the History Department and Home Economics Department for nine weeks. Mr. Barney tells his class about the importance of history. - 52 - Miss Herzog finds that she has many different chores to attend to. Teachers Mrs. Rankin gladly shares her responsibilities of the home economics department with her student teacher, Miss Williams. The moment Pat has been waiting for. - 53 - The second quarter Mrs. Rankin carried on her many duties with the aid of Miss Ann Herzog. “We Learn The Whys” Math, English, and science are the principle purposes of MES Club with the emphasis on science. The members do experiments and study the whys of things. Chief scientist this year is Vickie Minton; assistant scientist is Mayme Foushee; secretary, Dale Kirkbride; and treasurer, Phil Taylor. - 54 - Paint Spatterers The Art Club meets at least once a month in the art room. The sponsors are Mrs. Anderson, the art teacher, and Mr. Taylor. During the meetings, they make plans to do art work throughout the school, and they also do the various types of advertising for other clubs and activities. The main event of their year is the annual art exhibit given in the spring. Members have no dues to pay upon joining, but they make their own money by selling candy at basketball games. With the proceeds the members take a trip to St. Louis in the spring. The president of Art Club this year is Jill Whipple, the vice-president is Sara Dickirson, and the secretary-treasurer is Brenda Barker They have a very fine organization and a lot of hard working members. - 55 - On The Job Training The Co-operative Education program has grown steadily in the past few years at D.H.S. The students learn a trade while going to school. Various merchants train the students in their own occupations. This opportunity prepares them for a job after graduation from high school. The officers are president, Ronnie Bess; vice-president, Kathy Grubbs; treasurer, Brenda Mann; reporter, Patti McCanne; parliamentarian, Bill Myers. -56- Madrigal These students who are members of Mixed Chorus are chosen on the basis of their ability to perform. Mixed Girls Chorus - 59 - Bearcat Marching Band Officers This year's band officers are: president, Mark Severs; vice-president, Jeff Barbour; secretary and treasurer, Sharon Guinn; reporter, Wayne Jean; Quartermaster, Jim Jones; and historian, Deloris Cortez. Drum Major And Twirlers The drum major and twirlers have been a tremendous asset to our marching band this year. They have performed at several ballgam es. Emily McCanne -61 - Band Queen On December 14, 1963, the band held its annual dance. The three lovely candidates were escorted into the gaily decorated Union Hall. The queen. Miss Diane McElrath, was dressed in a pretty yellow party dress, as her escort, Neal Garner, crowned her Band Queen for 1963-64. The candidates were chosen by the members of the band. Attendants - 63 - Concert Band Give A Great Big Cheer For The Heroes Of The Year From these great athletes have come a great display of physical exertions ana sportsmanship. This c lub is made up of the sports lettermen. During the year the club has a basketball game between the faculty and a local basketball team. During the half time of this game the D Club boys put on a half time show, which is the initiation of the new members. This has always proved to be very amusing. At the end of the year, the boys take a trip to Lake Taneycomo, where they spend a weekend enjoying such things as skiing, fishing, swimming, and just plain goofing off. The sponsors of D Club are Coach Thrower, Coach Lee. and Coach Norvell. The president is Jim Bland; vice-president is Don Jones; and the secretary-treasurer is Clyde Vaughn. 7 - 66 - All From Dexter Stand Up And Holler At the football and basketball games you hear many voices booming for the Dexter Bearcats. Many of those voices belong to the members of Pep Club. The sponsor is Mr. Jarrell, and the cosponsor is Mrs. Wiggs. The president is Sue Dean; vice-president is Phyllis Lively: and the secretary-treasurer is Dawn Poyner. - 67 - Varsity Cheerleaders Janet and Sara are the captains for the Varsity basketball squad. Prairie 0 fourth straight conference champion ship, swept to their first undefeated Dexter 13 C’ville 7 Dexter 56 Gideon 7 untied season in school history in 1963. The ’Cats have won 19 and Dexter 41 Malden 0 Dexter 33 Hayti 0 lost 1 in two years and their record Dexter 19 P. Bluff 14 for three years is 26 and 3. While winning all 10 of their games, they led both conferences in team offense Dexter 41 P'ville 14 Dexter 21 Sikeston 3 Dexter 38 Kennett 14 and defense for the third year in a row . 318 59 - 70 - This was a signal seen many times by the Bearcat fans this year as the Bearcats scored 318 points to lead both conferences. Jim Bland scored 114 to lead both conferences for the third straight year. Clyde Vaughn had 65, second in the conference, and Don Jones and Gary Crane each had 36 for sixth.
