The Standing Naval Force Atlantic is a permanent multi-national
naval squadron of destroyer type ships. It has been deployed
throughout the 12 million square miles of the North Atlantic since
December 1967. The objectives of the force include improvement of
multi-national teamwork by providing year round experience and
training, demonstrating the solidarity of the Nato Nations, providing
for rapid deployment in times of tension, and to provide the
elements of a more powerful Nato Naval force if required.

CDR DENNIS J. VAN BUSKIRK, USN
Commander VAN BUSKIRK is from Madison, Wisconsin. He was commissioned through the NROTC scholarship program at the University
of Wisconsin, Madison where he graduated with a BS degree in Marine Geology in August 1969.
His first assignment was as Communications Officer in USS JULIUS A. FURER CDDG-61 homeported in Newport, Rhode Island. He
then joined the pre-commissioning detail for USS DALE QDLG-19D and later commissioned her as head- of the Communications Department.
In August of 1973 he reported to the Navy Recruiting District, New York where he served as Enlisted Programs officer, responsible for
enlisted Navy recruiting in New York City, Long Island, 'and part of upstate New York.
ln 1975 he reported to Sperry Systems Management, a defense contractor in Long Island where he spent five months working on the
combat systems software and operating doctrine for USS OLIVER HAZARD PERRY QFFG-71. This was followed by Department Head
training in Newport. While in Newport he was sent briefly to serve as U.S. Liaison Officer aboard the German tall ship GORCH FOCK
during the Bicentennial Celebration in New York City. .
Following his graduation from the Department Head course in 1976, he reported to the Oliver Hazard Perry Pre-Commissioning Unit at
Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine as part of the nucleus crew. Commander VAN BUSKIRK commissioned USS OLIVER HAZARD PERRY
QFFG-71 as Combat Systems Officer and served in Perry until January of 1980 when he reported to the Pentagon in Washington as Aide and
Administrative Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Surface Warfare. During that time he also served as Military Aide to the
Governor of Wisconsin during President Reagan's inaugural in 1981. Following his tour at the Pentagon he reported to USS DEWEY
QDDG-45J as Executive Officer.
Commander VAN BUSKlRK's awards include: two Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service
Medal, two Meritorious Unit Citations, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
He is married to the former Ginny GARITY of Jefferson, Wisconsin and they have two daughters, Kelley and Michelle.
