He then reactivated and served four months in uss PIRATE CAM-2755 untilher sinking in Woman, operation. V - . RADM Ekelund entered submarine school and was graduated in l945l. He then reported to duty USS COBIA CSSf245.J and servedas Gunnery Officer until OCt0ber l952. RADM Ekelund qualified in submarines during this period. During the subsequent tour at the U.S. Submarine School Staff he instructed in ProeSubmarine Tactics in the basic course, assisted with the PCO course- and participated in the establishment of the Refresher Training Course and PXO course. In 195.8 RADM Ekelund was transfered its Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for the commissioning and fitting out of the new construction guided missile submarine USS GROWLER CSSG-5775 -and subsequent assumed duties as Navigator, Operations Officer, Engineering Officer and Executive Officer. November I96l RADM Ekelund relieved as Commanding Officer' of USS GRAYBACK fSSG-5745. During his tours in GROWLER hd GRAYBACK he articipated in seven submarine special operations and deterrent patrols in the Pacific. an f P , t During the period January to August l964, RADM Ekelund pursued a course of study at the Armed Forces Staff College and attended ' f h A h ssi ned the Polaris Command Course. Upon completion of this instruction he was ordered to the Joint Strategic Planning Staf w ere e was a g as a member of the Tactics Branch. In i966 he returned for a tour of duty on the Staff of Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet as Force Plans Officer. I A I I ln July i968 he was transfered to the University of Rochester to pursue post-graduate education. Upon graduation in September l968, f N I A l ses, h 's awarded a Master of Science Degree in Systems Analysis. After a short period of temporary duty at the Center or ava na y e wa A RADM Ekelund reported in January l97O to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as Head, Strategic Warfare Analysis Branch in the Systems Analysis Division. P In March l972, RADM Ekelund reported to Vietnam and assumed duties as Assistant Chief of Staff for Administration on the combined staff of Commander U.S. Naval Forces and Chief Naval Advisory Group, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam and became the Chief of Staff in November I972. After completing periods of temporary duty in Hawaii and Washington, RADM Ekelund was ordered to Command of USS ALBANY CCG-l9j in July l973. ' Following this command tour RADM Ekelund was assigned to the Naval War College as the Dean of Academics H2 WHS Selected f0I' Flag rank in January i976 and in July assumed the duties as the Deputy Director of Naval Education and Training.
