McHomes USS DEWEY CDDG-455 is the second Navy ship to bear the name of the flamboyant Admiral of the Fleet, George DEWEY. The first USS DEWEY CDD-3493 served gallantly in the Pacific theater during World War ll. - Like her predecessor, the present USS DEWEY was built by Bath Iron Works of Bath, Maine. The keel was laid August IO, l957. The christening took place on September 30, l958, with the honorable Katherine St. George, representative of New York's 28th Congressional District, as the sponsor. The ship was commissioned as Guided Missile Destroyer Leader Fourteen CDLG-l4j on December 7, I959, with Commander Elmo R. Zumwalt in command. USS DEWEY was the first ship in the world built from the keel up as a guided missile ship, and adopted as her motto The Worlds First and Finest . During the ten years after her commissioning USS DEWEY sought to live up to her motto. While serving as a unit of the Second, Sixth and Seventh Fleets, she visited Northern Europe. the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Orient. She took part in both the Cuban Quaratine and the Vietnam Conflict. Dn ll November, I969, USS DEWEY was decommissioned in order to undergo an extensive anti-air warfare modernization in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. She was recommissioned on March l3, I97l, under the command of Commander Conrad .lg Rorie, and headed to her new homeport, Newport, Rhode lsland. ln June, l972, USS DEWEY sailed for her second deployment to Southeast Asia. During operations in the Gulf of Tonkin she rescued two downed avaitors and shot down a Soviet MIG aircraft. DEWEY returned to Newport in December, l972. After a deployment to the Mediterranean in the fall l973, USS DEWEY sailed for her new homeport, Charleston, South Carolina, arriving on March I, I974. W Since moving to Charleston, DEWEY has completed two Mediterranean deployments and has participated in many fleet exercises. Commander C.L. TERRY, the present Commanding Officer, assumed command on July 22, l978.
