CRUISE 1978 WW 4 APRIL 78-26 OCT 78 USS DEWEY KDDG-455 is the second Navy ship to bear the name of the flamboyant Admiral of the Fleet, George Dewey. The first USS DEWEY CDD-3495 served gallantly in the Pacific theater during World War 11. The present USS DEWEY was built by Bath Iron Works of Bath, Maine. The keel-was laid, 10, 1957, the christening took place on September 30, 1958, and the ship was commissionedlasfiuided lVl'ifssil8 .f', Leader Fourteen CDLG-141 on December 7, 1959. During the ten years after her commifssiioning, USS DEWEYiserved as a unit of the Second, Sixth, and Seventh Fleets, visiting Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Orient. She took part in the Cuban Quarantine and the Vietnam Conflict. l Q1 In October 1969, USS DEWEY was decommissioned to undergo extensive anti-air warfaife n1oderni'iaEion in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. After being recommissioned in 1971, USS DEWEY returnedllto acftiorf in Vietnam and the Mediterranean. On July 1, 1975, USS DEWEY was designated as Guided Missile Destroyer Forty-Five QDDG-451 as part of a major Navy reclassification program. . p Y if USS DEWEY is currently homeported in Charleston, South Carolina.
