Although some elementary friendships may not last forever, others will. Those, we cherish the rest of our lives. In an effort at Making Our Best Better Students throughout classrooms are devoting more time to academics than activities. As pictured, Jason Garrison, John Massingill and Ricky Purdue, in English, they realize the importance of education in our society. Even before classes Byron Swain, Richard Murphy and Johnny Stature find little time is allowed for visiting. Kristy Brown, below, gives 100% class time to her studies. He now owns 1 horse which he rides in various rodeos. Tracy has a long list of accom- plishments which have taken him many places. When he was in 9th grade Tracy achieved the team roping average for the 2nd year- end at the 4SHSRA rodeo. In Fort Worth at the Youth National fin- als he was a 1st in the last round a 5th in average. He was award- ed the 84 85 All Around title at the OYRA rodeo in Velma, Ok. At the OYRA finals for '84 '85 he was the 3rd runner-up All Around Cowboy. While he was in Texarkana at the 4SHSRA finals he made the year-end ribbon rop- ing, 4th in calf roping, 1st in team roping. Just throughout his high school years Tracy has been awarded fourteen belt buckles a saddle. His greatest prize, a saddle, was awarded him at the OYRA finals for the year-end prize. Tracy really enjoys roping riding. I guess its because I've grown a fancy to it as a hobby. It brings lots of fun, competition, enough money. I've had a few state championships in high school . I hope one day to move up win the world title. 54 CLARKSVILLE FUNERAL HOME George M. Bean Ed Lindman Phone: 427-2244 DETROIT SUPPLY CO. It was the kind of learning not taught in the classroom but involved caring teachers to guide us and save us if we got in over our heads. Our ambitions were not only set on academics but more often than not, the social status we might achieve. Our goals would only be footsteps away, and high school was our stepping stone toward these goals. 4 fcrYaU ThisVe t 6V,at en« QueetV 'escot‘e i bV Set«ot ’ 9enioi °n'’ JR. Every- one's life will be affected in one way or another by some of the things they have learned in their business classes. Techno- logical changes are occurring rapidly in the business world. Students at D.H.S. are ex- tremely lucky to be learning on the modern equipment in our business labs. Mrs. Morriss I think Mrs. Morriss' business classes are very inter- esting and very educative. I've learned a lot this year and in the previous years, and I am glad I've had the opportunity to learn the things I have and to have had her as my teacher. Tommy Flournoy The business classes should be important to everyone. They are very helpful in today's society. Business classes are great and I would advise everyone to get into a business class. Gwen Patterson I have found that the business classes that we have here at D.H.S., are very informative. We learn a great deal of important information. Which will help us all in the careers that we choose for the future. Tammy Henry Mr. Cowan was unable to ex- press his point-of-view on Ag. Special Edu- cation Classes are classes for students who need more indi- vidualized help than the average student. A com- plete battery of tests is given to determine a stu- dents individual needs. Most students in spe- cial education classes at De- troit ISD attend specialized classes for three subjects and regular classes for the remainder of their subjects. Special education teachers moniter their student's progress or failure in the regular classroom subjects and work closely with the regular teacher to enable the special student to receive the best education possible. Theatre Arts I has been added to our curricu- lum at Detroit this year. I feel it is a great asset to our school. The class offers an opportunity for the students to express him- self creatively. The students in Theatre Arts 1 this year have great talent and have applied themselves. At- titude and ap- plying themselves are the key factors in performing. The class has produced two successful plays this year. Ms. Deverell Derek's whittling his troubles away. CLOSING As most parents and students are aware, we are in the throes of change in education. Surely an educational system that has enabled our nation to place men on the moon and explore the threashold of space cannot be far off course. Like any system, to remain viable, we must have change. Our legislators have decreed that we make certain changes. We hope they will be for the general well-being of our nation. We know that without popular education no government which rests on popular action can long endure; people must be schooled in the knowledge and if possible in the virtues upon which the maintenance and success of free institutions depend. I view education as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in. What our schools do today may prove in the long run to be more decisive than any other factor in preserving the form of government we cherish. Best of good fortune to each of you as you travel your paths in this life. Sincerely, R.B. Tolson Superintendent Far left: Elementary principal, Charles Sharp.
