The Eagle 1955-1956 Avoid the reeking herd, Shun the polluted flock. Live like that stoic bird. The eagle of the rock. Published by the Students of DETROIT HIGH SCHOOL Detroit, Texas Foreword If, in turning the pages of this book, you recall some of the happiest hours, the best loved scenes, and the valued friends of the past year; and if the pictures we have chosen will help to make your memories of your high school days more vivid throughout the passing years, then our purpose in publishing this annual has been fulfilled. The Staff Dedication To MISS ALTA HAWKES and to MR. TOM McEWIN This volume of THE EAGLE is dedicated with admira tion, affection, and appreciation. FISHER Superintendent’s Message It has always been an accepted fact that the central theme in our American herit- age is the importance of the individual person. From the earliest moment of our history, we have believed that every human being, regardless of his race, religion, or social position has essential dignity and integrity which must be respected and safeguarded. Moreover, we believe that the welfare of the individual is the final goal of group life. To be secure in our rights, each of us must be willing to respect the rights of others. In our schools we have an obligation to give equal opportunity to all who seek it. Here in Detroit we try to fulfill our obligation by instilling into the minds of our youngsters those sterling qualities of loyalty, good fellowship, honor, and that re- gard for the rights of others that stamps a man a true gentleman. Our annual staff has followed the above theme in preparing this annual. It re- presents unselfish devotion, the sharing of thoughts, ideas, and above all, the ability to work harmoniously together. The end result of its endeavors is the annual you now possess, the staff is to be commended for a job well done. Each member of Superintendent Dear Students, As principal of Detroit High School, I would like to congratulate the members of THE EAGLE staff as the book goes to press. You richly deserve congratulations for such a fine book! I extend best wishes to the student body for its great spirit during the past year, not only in academic work buy in extracurricular activities as well. Such a keen interest and deep loyalty as you have shown are assets that are appreciated very much. I hope that you have enjoyed this year in Detroit High School and that you will always remember your school and your teachers as kindly as they will remember you. Yours sincerely.
