EDWIN STEPHENS GURDJIAN Football-2, 3, 4 captain-4 Baseball-1, 2, 3, 4 Varsity Club-4 Honor Society-1, 2, 3, 4 Prefect-2 Class President-1 Class Vice-President-2 Dramatics-4 Ed is one of the older members of this class, joining us in the second grade. Since then, he has been one of the attributes of this class in both academic and athletic prowess. Ed has made most of the school's athletic teams since he was in the ninth grade. Ed plans to continue his education at Oberlin University in Ohio. We feel that wherever Ed goes, he will contribute much to all in which he takes part- DONALD RALPH ISBRANDT Baseball Sub-Middler-1 Middler-2 Blue and Gold-4 A subtle comment introduces our next member of the Senior Class, for Don is probably the most vivacious person of the Class of '53. Don came to the school in the ninth grade, and since then has added much to the life of the Senior Class. If you hear a comment that is slightly out of place, it was prob- ably said by Don. Although Don has not been too active in sports, he has made up for it by his personality, and that is why the yearbook staff feels that Don should succeed at any- thing he attempts.

eight BREWSTER PHILLIPS CAMPBELL Track-2, 3, 4 Prefect Vice President-4 Class Vice-President-4 Blue and Gold assistant editor-4 Yellow Jacket editor-4 This year's most remarkable student is Bruce Campbell. Easily conceded as the class wit, Brewster is the usual cause of riotous laughter in and out of the classroom and the cause of much consternation to the teacher who can't quite hide his amusement. What's more, his humor can slip in through the teacher's defense in such things as reports and geometric proofs. His mugging attracts many eyes to his end of the dining table. Yet there is a deeper, intellectual side. Wide reading has brought Bruce a profound religious philosophy which ap- pears in his more serious moments. A third aspect of his ver- satility in his outside activities. He is a prefect and class vice- president this year. All these attributes go to make a single personality that has made a deep impression in the Detroit Country Day archives. His future aspirations include seminary training at either Tulane or Kenyon. GERALD THOMAS DAVIES Class President-3, 4 Class Vice-President-2 Debate-1, 2, 3 school-2, 3, 4 Blue and Gold business manager-4 Yellow J acket-4 Dramatics-4 Gerry's greatest field of activity is his speaking. No doubt his winning personality and confidence make this possible. He has been the mainstay of the newly formed debating team which Gerry helped guide to runner-up spot in the Class B cham- pionships in Michigan last year. He has participated since the eighth grade in the Silver Ring Contest for extemporaneous speaking. There seems to be no end for Gerry's versatility when we also consider that he has been a member of the honor society many times, that he has been class president for the last two years, and that he has managed the business and photography for the yearbook. He has been the binding and leading influence on the class. Even with all this re- sponsibility, Gerry has managed to retain his smile and become one of the outstanding social successes in our class. Preparing for the business world, Gerry will take up accounting and law at Michigan. There can be little dissent on Gerry's future accomplishments.

WILLIAM FREDERICK STANLEY Lincoln High School-1 Cranbrook-2 Track-3 captain-4 Cheerleader-4 Dramatics-4 WILLIAM KIRBY SMITH Football4, 4 Basketball-4 Baseball-3, 4 Class Secretary-1 Class Treasurer-2 Blue and Gold-4 Dramatics-3, 4 Whenever one cranes his neck to the back of the room to find the source of that peal of laughter one is sure to meet the beaming face of Bill Smith. Bill has come up from the ranks of Country Day. He started in the kindergarten and this year he finishes in the twelfth grade. All through his long stay at D.C.D. Bill has been an outstanding athlete. In football and in baseball he has been valuable as a player and as a manager. Bill is also noted his custom restyling of his car. Who can forget his oral races with Don Isbrandt . . . during a govern- ment recitation? Bill hopes to continue his illustrious career at Denison College. Here he hopes to take up political science. We are sure that Bill, with his wonderful sense of humor and his athletic talents, make a place for himself at Denison equal to the place left in the hearts at Country Day. While talking quietly outside the door of the school in the morning, we are suddenly interrupted from our conversation by the roar of twin pipes. Looking up we see a blue Ford hardtop come whizzing into the parking lot. A crowd quickly gathers, and from out of their midst comes the owner of this fine car. We observe that it is Bill Stanley, arriving to take on the toils of the day's work at Country Day. Bill was the last person to join the Class of '53 and since he has been here, he has contributed much to the life of this institution. Bill has been a member of the track team for the past two years and this year has been elected captain. Bill will probably choose Denison College as his next stop on his route to gain more education. We feel that he should go far.
