De-Mi 1969 Volume 50 Desk ter Jiigk Sckool Deskler. Ohio Dedication MR. MERRITT C. BURKE Mr. Merritt C. Burke has untiringly served this school and its students in his 10 years as a teacher and his 18 years as a principal. However, his services were never confined to the mere tasks of his career; but it was ex- tended to developing the respect for authority and morals of students through establishing certain standards so that they would become not only knowledgeable, but also respectable citizens. Therefore, to Mr. Burke, a most deserving individual, we. the staff of the 1969 De-Hi, proudly dedicate this yearbook. Action is an integral part of a student's life. School is a period of mental activity, when one broadens the scope of his mind: and one of emotional activity, when one encounters both success and defeat. It is a period in which one develops physically through ath- letics and when students hurry from class to class and from meeting to meeting. DHS is WHERE THE ACTION IS! 3 4 STUDENT LIFE No one can pick out a particular student’s life and say that his is a typical life of a D.H.S. stu- dent. Although we are all in- volved in different activities, we all hope to reach our peak of perfection. Each class is a little different. Freshmen can at last start bearing their class numbers and finally a class name. While sophomores make money from dances, bake sales, and car washes, they have fellowship together.” Last but not least, Juniors receive their class rings and save their money for the greatest prom yet. They wait patiently as the Seniors count their days left, wondering what it will be like next year. All this - the sports, organizations, and friends make us look upon this last year at D.H.S. with mixed feelings of both pride and sadness. 7 Frankenstein Strikes Deshler! Deal me out, Kenny! The goal of ail teachers is to develop a student in mind and body, thus helping him to make a living and lead a worthwhile life. The teaching staff at Deshler High School is admired and re- spected by all. We owe these people our ability, our future, and our lives. All entered classes with a bounding ambition. This is my last year, and I’m going to make the most of it! was the idea possessed by the Seniors. However, this idea was abandoned, in most cases, soon after the first six weeks. During all of the high school years, we had worked extremely hard to earn money. As a class, we worked at car washes, bake- sales, magazine sales, and record hops. By the spring of 1968, we had earned enough money to treat the Seniors to a splendid prom en- titled “Love Is Blue.” We assured ourselves that it was the best prom ever. As we finally reached our Senior year, we soon realized that our stay at DHS was soon to be ended. At the beginning of the year, we sold magazine subscriptions and Christmas cards to raise money for our well-earned class trip. On the 25th of May, our nervous Seniors took part in their gradua- tion exercises which was to be their final appearance in DHS. It was hard to believe but every- thing ended with graduation, and we would no longer return to the beloved halls of DHS. As we leave the security of DHS, each individual will enter into a new phase of his life. As we leave, the only appropriate state- ment seems to be: “Thanks DHS; it's been wonderful! 23 RICK KRAUSS DICK SUNDERMAN JOANN BEHRMAN BURDETTE SUNDERMAN CHRIS ROSEBROCK President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Reporter ike footsteps of the Class of '69 Will Class Colors GREEN AND GOLD Class Slower YELLOW ROSE Class Motto May we use our key of knowledge to un- lock the shackles of ignorance, hatred, and prejudice. While all three groups - Freshmen, Sophomores, and Jun- iors - are categorized as under- classmen, they entered school last September with many mixed feelings and emotions. The freshman year promised ex- citement, but the security of Jun- ior High was left behind for the uncertainties of Senior High. The Sophomores have adjusted to their surroundings, but they were given a chance to show their ability in band, chorus, athletics, and many other organizations. The Sophomores await their Jun- ior year to receive their class rings - signs of importance and advancement. The most prominent underclass- men are the Juniors. The junior year is filled with responsibility as they plan the Junior-Senior Prom, and as they prepare to take on the title of Seniors. 43 NORA KIEFFER MARK CHRISTMAN BONNIE COWELL TOM CORDES MIKE WOODS President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Reporter juniors Prepare ike Way dor JUNIOR CLASS ADVISERS: Mr. Oberhaus, Mr. Hanslik, Mr. Par ratt. Many of these organizations give us a greater knowledge of the world and the people who surround us. Some place us in closer contact with people who have similar interests and skills while others operate solely for the purpose of having fun. All of them teach each individual the idea that he must be compatible if he intends to contribute anything to society. He also learns that he must be able to associate successfully with the various personalities he will encounter throughout his lifetime. The organizations at Deshler High School offer an ex- cellent opportunity to fulfill this need. 55 Rational Manor Society JoAnn Behrman Doris Fintel Cheti Franz Janie Neiling Debbie Panning Dick Sunderman Peggy Flowers Rick Krauss Peggy Meyer Chris Rosebrock Steve Rosebrook Janet Williamson Rosemary Betts NATIONAL L_ HONOR SOCIETY Brian Burke Bonnie Cowell Nancy Gribbell Nora Kieffer Mr. Burke Advisor Wayne Phillips 56 Student Council Sandy Rader Dick Sunderman Mark Christman Scott Kress Ray Hogrefe Sandy VanHorn Sandy Businger Judy Tietje Diane Germann Doug Krauss Mark Petersen Harold Petersen Jackie Smith Marsha Wendt Karen Bostelman Jim Gerken Mr. James Weber Advisor Jan Christman 57 yesterday Js Reflected Jn Zke 'De-Mi DE-HI STAFF - FRONT ROW: JoAnn Behrman. To the athlete, the many hours of hard work and practice all comes down to the few short moments of competition where the difference between victory and defeat may rest on his shoulders at any given moment. It takes a spe- cial type of boy to be an athlete. A person whose natural ability or physi- cal strength need not equal his love for the sport in which he participates. A boy who, through the guidance of his coaches, has learned the rules of fair play and sportsmanship, thus has taken a step closer in attaining adult- hood. Also in striving for perfection in athletics, a young man is better able to realize his potentials so he may construct worthwhile goals which will benefit him not only during his schooling, but also in future years. Yet, athletics has another facet which can be recognized by anyone familiar with student life. The snake dances, sign days, and the many pep meet- ings, all help bring together a student body which has pride in their athletic teams. Led by a group of enthusiastic cheerleaders, the students of Deshler High School have, as always, kept spirit at a maximum. With the last baseball game in the spring, athletics at Deshler High School have bid their farewell. But the memories of basketball games, the baseball tournaments, and track meets will not be forgotten. They will remain in the hearts of Deshler students, both past and present, when- ever they think of days gone by. 83 Parratt’s Pirates VARSITY BASEBALL - FRONT ROW: John Drewes, Tony Neiling, Dale Franz, John Collier, Doug Krauss, Paul Schwab, Dave Krauss, Mark Christman, Rick Krauss, Duane Casteel. HIGH-ELEMENTARY 96 The Junior High years are the years of advancement from ele- mentary to high school; and, similarly, from childhood to adulthood. However, it is a period not just of physical and mental development, but of psy- chological development as well. The Junior High student is ac- quiring attitudes, yet learning to respect the ideas of others; he is learning independence, yet realizing the importance of friendship. This gradual forma- tion of character, combined with the many new and exciting ex- periences, associates Junior High with the fondest of memories. Up to, and including, the sixth grade, children are classified as elementary students. However, these students do not remain elementary” for long. By the turn of the century, these stu- dents will have evolved into Deshler’s promiment business- men, her lawyers, and her farm- ers. To these students will be- long the future of Deshler. May their elementary education pro- vide them with the basics of knowledge, that they may ad- vance and prosper for Deshler and for the world. 97 Joshua Beckford Joyce Bishop Ralph Bonnett Denise Botjer JOANN FRANZ MARTIN Pres.
