Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1966 volume:

REFLECTIONS Reflections are valuable possessions. They are unique bundles which can bring either joy or regret. They are a personal thing or they can be shared by others, to enlighten a dreary day. Reflections are the foundations of the world. They explore the unknown, examine and prove the known, and recollect and consider refluted theories and events. In the mind of man Is the Image of the future, present, and past, living In a soft hazy reflection. Is It pos- sible for life to exist without these incredible morsels which are teaming in our minds? They let us live and relive every event and scene whether it be beautiful or repulsive; whether happy or chaotic. PAUL OBERHAUS We the Staff of the 1966 De-Hi proudly dedicate this annual to Mr. Paul R. Oberhaus. For the past four years he has untiringly served this school and its students. His willingness to help anyone in need has made him an example to many and a friend to all. During the two years he has been our adviser he has brought us safely through, guiding us towards graduation and giving us a goal of higher education. By the dedication of this annual we hope to repay him in some small way for all he has done, and add to this our humble thanks. 3 MR. JOHN WATSON Add to your Faith Virtue; and to Virtue, Knowledge; And to Knowledge, Self-Control; and to Self-Control, Patience; and to Patience, Godliness; And to Godliness, Brotherly Kindness, and to Brotherly Kindness, Love. . . For if ye do these things ye shall never fall. H Peter 1:5,6,7,10 From elementary, through Junior High, and into high school, our steps have been directed by members of the Administration and Faculty. Governing authority Is held by the school board, the superintendent, and principal. Never forgotten are the patient and hard- working teachers, the smiling faces and the help of such people as the secretaries, librarians, cooks. Janitors, and bus drivers. A quiet hi in the hall, the desire to teach, understand, and help from these People will be thankfully reflected upon throughout our lives. AND SO____WE LEAVE These Cut Lines Really Get You Down By George—We Did It. UNDERCLASSMEN Rulers of the underclassmen are undoubtedly the Juniors, who anx- iously await their Senior year. The hectic planning for the Junior-Senior Prom, all the record hops, bake sales, and skating parties, all mem- ories are dear. Each year in high school is a new experience, an un- forgettable, happy group of reflections to write in our books of life. UNDERCLASSMEN 25 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Karen Behrman, Treas.; Richard Betts, Vice Pres.; Lou Ann Panning, Pres.j Marian Franz, Sec.; Donna Cowell, Reporter. Class of '67 Waits For Senior Year Once upon a time, we were timid, quiet, and hesitant, but with the movement of time, the Class of '67 gained poise, friendship, confidence, and knowledge. To- day, determined to be successful in our quest for learning, we are Juniors at Deshler High School. Since we assumed the position of un- derclassmen, this was the year to think of seriousness and academic life. Count- less numbers of chats by the fireside were held with us by our parents, teachers and our own consciences. Immediately, we assumed responsi- bilities as officers, chairmen, and workers for various student groups. Some of our classmates were in the band, while others were on the various athletic teams, in Vo-Ag, Home Ec., etc. Early in the year, we received our class rings. Displaying them proudly and on high, we beamed at our newfound pos- sessions, for they were a symbol of ad- vancement and belonging. Now, entering the final chapter of our high school careers next year, we look forward to a future in which we may live happily. Diana Bartley Lou Ann Basselman Psychology Class—Mind over Matter? Pres.; Neal Blough, Pres.; Larry Tletje, Treas.; Larry Feehan, Sec.; John Jones, Reporter. SOPHOMORES ENTER REAL SCHOOL LIFE A year ago, we entered the doors of Deshler High School as bewildered, yet unobtrusive Freshmen. As time went on, we met and overcame the never-ending battle against classes we knew little about, ending with our advancement into the Sophomore class. As Sophomores, we were given a real chance to show our talents in the dif- ferent extra-curriculars. We had some of our students in the band, in the chorus, in athletics, and many others. The spring means we were much closer to the half-way point in our high school education, and in just two more years, we would be walking the nation's college campuses. Spring also was the time for select- ing and ordering our class rings. Stand- ing in line to be measured for them, we really felt as though we were important. With spirit, knowledge, and confidence, we, the Class of 1968, look ahead to the future with anticipation. SOPHOMORE ADVISERS: Mrs. Sonnenberg; Mr. Behnfeldt; Mrs. Weller. We, the Freshman class of Deshler High School, though we are little fishes in a big pond, realize that it takes all grades to have a smoothly run high school. Our 'big brothers' seem to look down their noses at us, but we know that they were Freshmen once. Now, we sponsor record hops instead of the more juvenile skating parties, as we start to make the needed money to take the trip to Washington and also to put on the Junior-Senior Prom. Entering into the social life of the school, we have members on our own bas- ketball team, while a few of our class- mates are on the Varsity baseball team, and others in band and other extracur- riculars. With wide, yet thoughtful eyes, we look toward the future when someday we will be top dogs. 3A ADVISERS: Mr. Meyer; Mrs. Melenburg; Mr. Ehrman. Many of them give us greater knowledge or perhaps lead us into the fields of culture and art. Some place us in closer contact with persons of similar interest and skill while others operate for fun or the benefit of others. All teach us that compatibility is a necessity and incompatibility only a frustration. That we will encounter competition, and that helping others is enjoyment. The excitement of a baseball game, pride in our track team, the cheering crowd in basket- ball season; all make our reflections of sports shimmer with pride. SPORTS an old bird called parratt Coach Garrold Parratt A Parratt by any other name. Would likely not enjoy such fame As our particular kind of bird Of whom the baseball world has heard. (It's no nonsense) Some call him Casey, coach, or such, It really doesn't matter much; But some may call him other names, For winning 700 games---------- (At their expense) His patience, tact, and common sense Have helped to make boys into men And some have up and made the grade For which they're even how well paid. (For what he's done) There will be more successful seasons Which will, we're sure, just add more reasons, To why his fellow teachers say, They don't make Parratts every day, (Like this one) Some boys may not have got the word But most of them I'm sure have heard The words of wisdom pouring forth From East to West and South to North. (From every direction) SPORTS DEDICATION And when this old bird calls it quits, and forgets about the runs and hits, There'll be a lot of friends we know, Who'll sorta hate to see him go, (But with affection) 58 ----John Watson NINE LETTERMEN LEAD PIRATES TO VICTORY Gerry Christman Tom Sunderman Mike Kennedy Roger Parker Bob Schwab Rich Betts DeWayne Wendt Marv Maas Bill Botjer Varsity Baseball Bottom Row: Dennis Schwab, Jim George, Bob Schwab, Betts, Bill Botjer, Marvin Maas, Jim Parker, Gerry Tom Sunderman, Tom Neiling, Larry Smith, George Christman, Mike Kennedy, Ron Hughes, Lynn Burke, Lederer, Russ Yantz, Rick Krauss. The team was generally acclaimed as one of the best in Northwest Ohio, with statistics proving this conclusively. Roger Parker and Richard Betts led Deshler's hitting, and also paced North- western Ohio diamond statistics. They both batted .472, with Parker driving in 16 runs and Betts, 14. Marv Maas, who batted .467 was third in Northwest Ohio's statistics, with Gerry Christman, .461, and Tom Neiling, .431, fourth and fifth. Christman and Betts dominated the pitching statistics, with each of them win- ning five times. They accounted for 115 strikeouts, Christman's 80 being tops in this part of Ohio. Gerry also pitched three one-hitters in his string of five wins. Teamwise, their record was 10-0, which added to a 20-4 record compiled during the summer months, gives Deshler a 30-4 record going into tournament com- petition this spring. 1965 FALL SEASON RECORD DHS 16 Oakwood ........... 0 5 Holgate...................2 5 Gomer ................... 4 4 Ridgeville .............. 0 7 Ayersville ...............6 2 Malinta.................. 0 6 Pettisville...............1 4 Hamler....................0 16 McClure ..................0 5 Gomer.....................2 10 wins, 0 losses 60 Shown here are members of the Deshler High School basketball team in action against Westwood, January 29.
