DE-HI 1963-1964 Produced by the Annual Staff of Deshler High School Deshler, Ohio Published by Inter-Collegiate Press, Inc. Mission, Kansas Table of Contents Spotlight on Administration and Faculty Spotlight on Seniors Spotlight on Underclassmen Spotlight on Sports Spotlight on Business We Dedicate this 1964 DE-HI To MR. OTTO MEYER The teacher of various business subjects, Mr. Otto Meyer has contributed greatly to business education. With the aid of such things as field trips, he has attempt- ed to teach his pupils all about the business world. Be- sides serving in a teaching capacity, Mr. Meyer also serves as clerk of the Board of Education, a job which requires much work on his part. Mr. Meyer also acts as advisor in the publication of both the De-Hi and the Loyal D. He is always ready to help when a problem arises concerning either of the afore mentioned publications. A genuine interest in the students characterizes this man. For no maner how busy he is, he always has time to help a student. For these many things, we proudly dedicate this 1964 De-Hi to Mr. Otto Meyer. 3 The Administration includes those who rule” the school. Serving in this capacity are the'superin- tendent, the principal, and the school board. The faculty includes those men and women who give their time to further the education of eager young students. Thus the administration and faculty form a very essential part of the school. Spotlight on Administration and Faculty Seated above is Mr. Richard Krauss, Superintendent. Standing is Mr. Merritt Burke, Principal. Superintendent and Principal Two very important cogs in the wheel are the principal and the superintendent. Both of these men are devoted to improving and in- creasing the school's academic program. The well-adjusted teaching staff and teacher - student co-operation is evidence of sound judgment and guidance on their parts. An ac- tive and sincere interest in students and their problems characterizes both of these men. Administration School Board These board members are representatives of the people, popularly elected to serve as a link between the taxpayers and the educational system. The community owes much to these men who give generously of their time and energies to create and maintain Deshler's fine educational system. Seated, left to right: Mr. John Watson, Mr. Fred Panning, Mr. Lawrence Drewes, Mr. John Van Zandt, Mr. Warren Isen- barger. Standing: Mr. Richard Krauss, Mr. Otto Meyer. 6 High School Faculty ATHLETICS: William Pace, Gar- rold Parratt. SCIENCE: Paul Oberhaus, Ro- maine Watson, Lawrence Kruse. HISTORY: Adelia Schwiebert, Paul Behnfeldt. LANGUAGE: Rev. Gordonjohnson, Martha Newhart, Dennis Hales. A high school teacher is truly a unique personality. He can achieve satisfaction found only in teaching, for his students are old enough to exchange ideas freely on an adult level, an interested class can be a truly exhilarating exper- ience. All the faculty share the same goal: to develop a student educated in mind and body who knows not only how to make a living but also how to lead a worthwhile life. AGRICULTURE: C. V. Donnell, Home Economics: Carol Remy. MUSIC: Thomas Erhman, Helen Spitler. MATHEMATICS: Anna Schwab, James Weber. 7 Elementary Teachers KINDERGARTEN: Margaret Don- nell. FIRST GRADE: Barbara Schnable, Thelma Papoi, absent. SECOND GRADE: Marjorie Tuss- ing, Ileen Steffen. THIRD GRADE: Ruth Dierickx, Barbara Koehler. An elementary school teacher is a stu- dent's first contact with education. It is in the elementary grades that pupils start to form their opinions and beliefs. The teach- er must start the young pupils on the right path, teaching them the very basics of edu- cation. An elementary teacher is kind and sympathetic, giving her all to her students. She works with her students with patience and understanding. The only reward that she asks is that her students remember her as someone who tried to understand and give them the best beginning education'' possi- ble. The elementary teacher always wel- comes advancement. New methods are always being employed. An example of this is the teaching of various languages to the young pupils and new methods in math and reading. FOURTH GRADE: Hildegarde Scholl, Emma Schortgen. FIFTH GRADE: Elizabeth Schlot- terbeck, Ruth Ellen Fly. SIXTH GRADE: Gladys Borough, Norma Diedrich. 8 School Employees LIBRARIANS: Ruth Donald, Alyce Meyer. SECRETARIES: Dona VanScoyoc, Martha Sunderman. COOKS: Edna Linhorst, Dorothy Kern, Sevilla Reynolds, Goldie Howe, Martha Parker. The Senior Class of 1964 is proud to have these people who are so concerned about our wel- fare. We appreciate the work the librarians have done for us in finding our books and helping us with many other problems. The secretaries have kept our records for us and in preparing hearty meals, the cooks have become favorites in our hearts. The jani- tors have kept the building neat and clean and they were always there to unlock a certain door for us. The bus drivers have trans- ported us to and from school dur- ing all kinds of weather. 1 o; iis, we thank you all. CUSTODIANS: Earl Haas, Reed Hathaway. 9 BUS DRIVERS: Tom Kline, Ed Rutter, Karyl Simpson, Bill Kern. When the year comes to a close, the seniors are people of mixed emotions. While looking for- ward to graduation as the beginning of a new way of life, the senior would like time to move out so quickly, in order to capture a bit of the spirit of high school and to savor the little time left to him as a youth. Never again will he have quite the same carefree disposition, for with graduation comes re- sponsibility. Realizing that he has attended his last Record Hop, Junior-Senior Prom, or basketball game, or club meeting at the school which has become so much a part of his life, the senior becomes reflec- tive--and a little saddened. In the back- ground is the Continental Hotel where they stayed while in Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Krauss, chaperones on the trip, descend the White House steps. 26 Graduation Preceding graduation, a feeling of tension filled the air. Hands shaky with anticipation, the girls helped nervous boys pin on their car- nations. Little fingers were locked, the pro- cession began, and 49 seniors, on 98 shaky legs, marched into a gym crowded with hundreds of relatives and friends. As they proceeded down the aisle a dif- ference could be noted in the dress of five of the seniors. The afore mentioned students had gold tassels and each had a gold cord around his neck. Upon looking at one's program, it could be found that these five were honor students. Ranking in the top 1 OPfo of their class, these students were noted for their outstanding scho- lastic ability. They were as follows: Robert Meyer, Sharon Ball, Gary Miller, Judy Marchal, and Becky Betts. The Invocation was given, and everyone was seated. Robert Meyer who was chosen from among the honor students to make the speech made his way to the stage. In his speech he thanked the administration, the teachers, and the school employees on behalf of the entire senior class. The Honorable Jackson E. Betts then gave the Commencement Speech. In it, the seniors were urged to make the most of the life which lay ahead of them. One by one, names were called and sen- iors were handed their long-waited-for diplo- mas. There were innumerable flashes of light as proud parents photographed their children on the threshold of life. Tears glistened in the eyes of some as they made perhaps their final exit from the little school they came to love. 27 While both are called Underclassmen, the sophomores and the juniors that enter school in Sep tember experience very different emotions. To the expectant sophomore the new year promises excite- ment. The comparative security of junior high has been left behind for the uncertainty of senior high; the sophomore is overawed but works with novelty that breeds enthusiasm. How different is the out look of the junior who has two different years ahead! He is no longer awed by his surroundings, but he faces a multitude of new responsibilities, and home- work is harder and more plentiful than ever before. Although he is allowed to wear a class ring, he re- ceives glances from the upperclassmen that remind him of the long year ahead before he may join the rank of the privileged upperclass. (Nancy S.) 47 A student may be an exceptional mathe matician or scientist but if he cannot work with peo pie, he will be contributing little to the society in which we live. In addition to the mental progress that ideas place in the classroom, a student must mature socially; he must mix and learn to get along with all types of people. School Organizations of fer him an excellent opportunity to fulfill this need and at the same time to have fun doing the things he likes best. Whether he prefers a quiet game of chess or a strenuous game of basketball, he is growing and maturing with every club meeting he attends. Concert Back Row, Left to Right: Pat Boesel, Janice Holder. The De-Hi depends upon the people who patronize it and provide the always necessary funds for publication costs.
