The Seniors plunged right into their work this first month pre- paring for their Washington trip. On the 24th, the Seniors went to neighboring towns to solicit ads for the DE-HI. Lots of fun, no school! The whole student body was enter- tained on September 28 by the Galvanos , master of Hawaiian music. During another assembly program, Mr. Donnell exhibited the prizes won by the F.F.A. boys for poultry judging at the F.F.A. National Convention. Congratulations, boys! No school again for the Seniors—class pictures were taken Oc- tober 21 at Fostoria. On October 26, we witnessed the dramatic arts of the Juniors in their play Sing for Your Supper. The coming Halloween brought a festive air to Deshler; Vernie Tussing and Karen Lee reigned as king and queen of the celebra- tion. About this time, the Seniors began their Christmas car drive and the Juniors started selling door decorations. November 2, Bill Wonders came from Fostoria to take individual pictures. Surprisingly, his cam- era survived the ordeal! ! On November 5, we plunged into the basketball season by meeting Hoytville. Of course, the Seniors sold popcorn and candy at the home games. What? No school again? Yep—Armistice Day. This is getting to be a habit, no school on the 15th either. We all went to the fields to decrease the pheasant popula- tion. Thanksgiving Day brought us poor students two more free days. All through December the Music Department prepared for the beautiful Christmas Concert which they gave on December 22. The following day at 2 o'clock, the doors were flung open and out rushed the student body looking forward to a nice long vacation. December 28 brought the start of the Christmas Tournament and victory for our team. Back to school on the 3rd of January. Two days later, group pictures were taken for the Annual. 4 The week of the 12th brought sem- ester exams and soon after. Annual orders were token by the staff. In the evening, January 26, the Juniors went to Malinta for Career Night exercises and two days later the top 40% of the Senior Class went to Malinta for the scholarship tests. The Junior High Tournament started February 5; our boys took the trophy. Then on Febru- ary 15, the County Tournament began and our team took that trophy and entered the District battle on March 3. Our hats are off to Mr. Eicher and the team! Deshler's tal- ented musicians had a chance to perform March 5, when the District Contest for solos and ensembles was held at Bowling Green. Out of seventeen entries, D.H.S. came back with seven first . More music—on March 15, the band went to Liberty Center for the All-County Music Program and on the 19th they went to Bryan for the band and chorus Contest. Tests, tests, tests! Three whole days of them, from March 23 to 25 the Every Pupil Tests were given. March 25, the 5 Senior Ploy pocked the auditorium. Sand- wiched between tests and the Senior trip, the cast literally played their roles in Who Wouldn't Be Crazy? The Seniors finally scraped together enough money for their trip and so on a Sunday in March, a happy crowd left for Washington. The month of April was filled with many music events: State Contests for both solos and ensembles and for bands and choruses, the All-County Music Festival rehearsal and concert. The eighth grade tests were given during April. May 7 brought the final dis- trict scholarship tests, and on the 13th, Senior Day. On the 5th, the Juniors honored the Seniors with o grand banquet and dance. Baccalaureate came May 15 and on May 20, Deshler High said farewell to another graduating class—the Class of '55. In cap and gown, diploma in hand, and a sigh of relief, each Senior jubilantly exited the por- tals of dear old D. H. Eleven new students joined us from Westhope; Betty Nickles, Ruth Swie- bert, Beatrice McMaster, Jean Creager, Carmen Imbrock, Marlene Meyer, Lois Hoops, Marvin Tietje, Ruth Bremer, Marilyn Shively and Janet Robison. Jonis Goller and Jim Diercx and Gene Maas were also new students. We lost two fellow classmates: Shirley Perry and Don Wink. We elected our officers who were Lowell Walthers, Donna Kop- penhofer, Morilyn Johnson, Joann Ruskey, and Vern Tussing. Before we knew it we were entering D. H. S. as Sophomores, with James Weber as our advisor. Betty Betts was our only newcomer and Melva Wink withdrew, leaving Deshler High with 44 experienced Sophomores. We elected Roger Trenkamp, Audrey Hoops, Gene Maas, Jim Dierickx and Beatrice McMoster to head the class for that year. Instead of an initiation we gave the freshmen a party to welcome them into high school. We ordered our class rings in the spring of I 953 and received them the follow- ing September, just in time to start the last half of our high school days. In September of 1953, 46 Juniors enrolled at D. H. S. Rollie Van Pelt, Delores Mahlman, and Charles Moses joined our class and Roselaine Zimmerman withdrew. James Weber was again our advisor and Betty Betts, Gene Maas, Carmen Imbrock, Morion Fintel and Linda Yungmann were our officers. Our Junior Class Play, Where's Laurie, was given October 26, 1954 with Mrs. Adelia Schwiebert and Mr. Robert Bonhardt directing it. The event which we had all been looking forward to was soon upon us, The Junior-Senior Prom, which was to be given May 6. We decided on the theme, Nep- tune's Gardens, which was decorated to resemble the oceon floor, with King Nep- tune reigning over the dance. A large lighted revolving ball was hung from the ceiling to give the effect of rippling waves. The stage was decorated to resemble an aquar- ium and gilted fish were hung from the ceiling. At twelve o'clock we went to the Star Theater to attend a show and then returned to the school for breakfast, to end one of the most important events of our high school days. We entered our last year of high school with 45 students. James Weber and Richard Norton were our advisors. Reggie Meyer joined our class and Paul Gobrogge withdrew. Rollie VanPelt moved awoy. The officers for this year were Gene Maas, Vern Tussing, Linda Yungmann and Marian Fintel. We started raising money for our trip with mogazine drives, Christmas Card Sales, refreshments at bosketboll games and selling candy at noon. Later on in our Senior year we sponsored a car wash, a show at the Star Theater and a fish fry. Another big event was our Senior Class Play, Who Wouldn't Be Crazy, which was given March 25, 1955. The directors were Richard Norton ond Miss Nichols. After a year of hard work, March 27 finally came and we left for Washington. After four days of sightseeing and excitement we re- turned to Deshler. Days flew by and it was soon time for our graduation. Baccalaur- eate Services were on May 15, and graduation on May 20. (pAophna One bright morning, in the middle of the night, in the year 1965, as my wife and I had just boarded the train and got comfortably seated we heard the conductor coming down the aisle saying tickets please. It was none other than our old classmate of 55 , Gehrett Far- quharson. After he had finished picking up the tickets he came back and sat down with us. Knowing Gehrett for his gift of gab he reminded us of our school days of 55 . He said he had been back home in Deshler not too long ago visiting his family and he thought while he was home he would take in a wrestling match. As he arrived at the arena in Toledo he noticed a bul- letin outside saying that the women would wrestle. As he come in the wrestlers were al- ready out in the ring. The more he looked at them the more they looked very familiar. They were two old classmates of DHS, Imogene Rein- hardt and Ruth Schwiebert, better known as Rumpin Reinhardt and Sweet Pea Schwie- bert. This got us on the subject more and more and before we knew it we were discussing everyone in the class. Joanne Ruskey and Marian Fintel own a string of dance studios throughout the country and the most famous dance is to teach horses to do the Mambo. Tom Smith and John Norden are running a paintshop and are painting peoples cars red on one side and yellow on the other just to hear the witnesses argue at the trial. Ben Breece is a Buick dealer and you would well recognize him by the sign he has in front of his store. BREEZY BEN'S BUICKS! It might not be the best car in town but it certainly is the biggest. Ruth Ann Bremer is living in California. She heard Bing Crosby sing Y'all Come and de- cided to take his advice. Delores Mahlman has married a great cartoon- ist, D. R., and have four comic strips. That's a change isn't it? Dick Yockey is practicing hard on his piano in hopes that someday Liberace will be his as- sistant. Ka-see's in Toledo has been taken over by Lois Hoops and Marvin Tietje and their course of meals includes Shicken Show-Mein and for dessert Sherry pie and Sheddar Sheese. Jim Dierickx has finally succeeded in being a teacher. He is teaching Chimpanzees to be pickpockets through the crowd at the Toledo Zoo. Betty Nickles is working as a test pilot in a burl- esque show. Every night at nine she takes off. Marlene Meyer and Gerry Meyer have invented a jet propelled broom that is sweeping the country. Phil Nicholson has been on the blink ever since his wife gave him the eye! ! ! Mary Ann Koppenhofer has married a multi- millionaire but she just laughs and says, Pearls come from oysters, but diamonds come from suckers. Reggie Meyer hos invented a revolving goldfish bowl for tired goldfish. Frank Hogrefe is working on a new way to play pool on the round side of a square table. Bob Suber has changed from his trumpet to a tamberine. Salvation Army here we come. Ernest Tietje has a chicken farm and is raising chickens without wish-bones. He says they are such happy and contented chickens that they have nothing to wish for. Janet Thompson is the main star in the Broad- way play Rain. She plays the lead of Miss Sadie Thompson. Betty Betts is hanging out in Greenwich Village, New York. She is working on her latest mas- terpiece, a life size statue of Richard Nor- ton which she intends to donate to our dear old Alma Mater. Charley Moses is working for the FBI. He rounds up people with loaded arms in their sleeves. Lowell Walthers, a famous jockey, has won the Kentucky Derby for three years in a row. He quotes, Next year the horse is going to carry me. Janis Goller is in show business and has a job working for her father on the stage. She is best known as Gorgeous Goller. Dick Courtney and Audrey Hoops as a team have become successful interior decorators. He specializes in chandeliers while she sticks to carpeting. Marilyn Johnson is in a U. S. 0. troop with Mar- ilyn Shively and Linda Yungmann. Shively plays the piano, Yungmann sings while John- son dances! ! ! Dick Stanfield editor and owner of the Deshler Flag has hired Jean Creager to help in the proof reading. There are only 10% of the words misspelled. Carmen Imbrock, having married Don Hogrefe, has become leader of the local garden club. Her latest speech concluded, With ten of us around the house we're all a little potty. Vern Tussing has his own orchestra now. He calls it his Rubber Band, because he is try- ing to stretch the music as far as he can. Ella Otten and Nancy Kline are putting out alarm clocks that don't run down. They say that all you have to do is set them on a wind- ing staircase. Donna Koppenhofer and Beatrice McMaster own a jewelry store. Right now they have a special 3-piece combination on their rings. Engagement, Wedding, and Teething. Gene Maas who is now a famous electrician, says that at the slightest mistake he will be tickled to death. Roger Trenkamp plays a harmonica in a hill- billy band. He always was good at eating corn on the cob. The train is now coming to a stop and the crowds ore rushing on.
