Senior In 1950 we entered high school with 45 students and Garrold Parrott as our advisor. We had 10 new students, six of whom were from Westhope: Norma Ehlers, June Godeke, Shirley Hill, Melvin Nickels, Wilma Ohlrich, and Mary Ann Schwiebert. We gained Nan Knoke from Wisconsin, Dick Perry from Michigan, Allan Yockey from Hoytville, and Gary Butler from Indiana. We elected officers as follows: President, Alice Scholl; Vice-President, Alfred Basselman; Secretary-Treasurer, Gary Butler; News Reporter, Allan Yockey. For our Freshman initiation the girls wore burlap bags, mothballs around our necks and clothes pins in our hair. The boys wore dresses and had to braid their hair. That evening the Sophomores gave us a very nice hayride. In 1951 we entered our Sophomore year with 46 pupils. A. R. Wyse was our ad- visor. Our new pupils were Myrna Hill, Bob Jones, Bill Curtis, Bernard Ziegler and Sarah Spence. Gary Butler and Nancy Jones moved away. Henry Tietje withdrew from school. We ordered our class rings in April and received them the following August. Our officers were as follows: President, DuWayne Rickerd; Vice-President, Ruth Casteel; Secretary-Treasurer, Melvin Nickels; News Reporter, Winfield Meyer. In 1952 we entered our Junior year with 47 pupils and Martin Smith as our advisor. We had 3 new pupils: Bob Maas from Kentucky, Clarice Cavanaugh from Jewell, and Laverne Van Pelt from Edgerton. Sarah Spence and Shirley Hill moved away. Our officers were as follows: President, Dick Perry; Vice-President, Sue Newton; Secretary, Nan Knoke; Treasurer, Herald Panning; News Reporter, Ruth Casteel. We planned our Junior-Senior Prom around the theme Dream Street and gave it April 30, 1953. The gymnasium had stars hanging from the ceiling to represent the sky. Posts of different colors represented the different streets. In the center we had an imaginary park with benches and a flower garden. At twelve o'clock we went to the Star Theater for a show and then came back to the school for breakfast. We all had a wonderful time. We gave our Junior Class Play, Bolts and Nuts on November 11, 1953. Mrs. Adelia Schwiebert and Mr. Richard Norton directed it. We entered our Senior Year with one new pupil, Dan Yarnell from Napoleon. Our advisors were Darrell Jones and Richard Norton. Robert Hogrefe, Winfield, Meyer, LaVerne Van Pelt, and Nancy Rush withdrew. Anthar Knollman left us to enter college. Our officers were as follows: President, Bernard Boulis; Vice-President, Melvin Nickels; Secretary, Nan Knoke; Treasurer, Sue Newton; News Reporter, DuWayne Rickerd. Our problem of raising money for our Senior Class trip was solved by giving bake sales, selling refreshments at basketball games, selling candy at noon hours, magazine drives, Christmas card sales and class plays. Our Senior Class Play was given on March 26. The play, Laughing Gas , was directed by Miss Shirlee Musser and Mr. Richard Norton. We left on March 28 for our trip to Washington and returned on April 1. Time flew by and our Baccalaureate Service was on May 16 and graduation on May 20. Farewell to dear old Deshler High. Sue Newton, Bernard Boulis, Melvin Nickels, DuWayne Rickerd, Nan Knoke. PROGRAM FINALE Class History 9
