See Detters QlaAdu It was only one hundred years from the time of the California gold rush that we, the freshmen of '49 began our flight with destination graduation, in what seemed a far off '53. It seems as though we flew at jet plane speed through those four years, and now as we approach this day of graduation, we suddenly pause to wonder what happened in these last four years. What did we accomplish, just what did we do? Remember our freshman year? Joining our class to make 44, were seven students from Westhope; William Behrmann, Ervin Hastedt, Donald Hoops, Ruth Meienburg, Gloria Thurston, Howard Ward, and Marian Yungmann. Jerry Straley from Belmore, and Vernon Panning also joined us. With Miss Martha Kahle as our advisor, we elected the following officers to help us through the rough year. Pres................Richard Bertz Sec...............Sharon Dubbs Vice Pres.........Gloria Thurston Treas.........Marian Yungmann The big event for us that year was the day the Sophomores initiated us. By the time they were through with us, we looked a mess and felt likewise; although we all survived the ordeal. Katherine Ann Ziegler left us after the first semester, and Sandra Firman at the end of the year. Our Sophomore year we started out 43 strong, to continue on to graduation. Mr. John Homze was selected as our class advisor, and the following officers were elected. Pres..................Richard Papoi Sec.......................Kenneth Scholl Vice Pres...............Howard Ward Treas.....................Richard Bertz During our Sophomore year, Tom Knoke and Pauline Cox joined us; and Betty and Fred Brit-enriker moved away. Early in the fall we had the privilege of welcoming into the high school, the freshmen class. Games and contests provided fun at the Memorial Field. In May we ordered our class rings which arrived late in the summer. For our Junior year we elected: Pres................Howard Ward Sec.........Virginia Koppenhofer Vice Pres.........Gloria Thurston Treas..........Marian Yungmann With Mr. John Homze, our class advisor and play director, we presented It's A Great Life , which after many practices and a lot of fun proved a big success. After much planning and preparation, that day of days, which fell this year on the first of May, was here—our Junior-Senior Banquet. Quite fittingly it was patterned after May Day . In the center of our elaborately decorated ballroom (the auditorium) was a May Pole and on the stage a fountain. After the banquet we spent the evening dancing to the music of Klaus-ing's orchestra. At twelve we went to the Star Theater, and after seeing, Saturday's Hero, came back to the school for a breakfast. Of our high school days, this banquet will no doubt remain our pride and joy. At last! Although it seemed incredible our long awaited, last year of school finally arrived. To man the controls through this year of years we elected as our class officers: Pres .................Tom Knoke Sec...............Virginia Ruskey Vice Pres............Ervin Hastedt Treas.............Ruth Meienburg With Mr. Burke and Miss Kindt, our class advisors, we began almost immediately our long hard struggle to finance a five-day trip to Washington, D.C. Early in the fall the class went to Dicken's Studio at Fostoria and had their individual pictures taken. On January 26, the group pictures within the school were taken for the Annual. In February we began working and practicing on our play, Desperate Ambrose , which we presented on March 27, in the high school auditorium. This too was a rootin', tootin', hilarious success. On March 29, with most of our projects completed and our business in order, Mr. and Mrs. Smykil chaperoned us on that well deserved trip to Washington, D.C. And so it was on May 21, that 37 remaining seniors, making up the class of '53, proudly received their diplomas. fi wfikucif Oh good, I'm sure this is the letter from Mr. Shouck with the vital information for my husband's and my latest book. You see we're writing a novel telling the adventures of our old Senior Class of '53, so we wrote to Mr. Shauck to find out whatever happened to our Classmates. I can hardly wait to read it, so here goes: Dear Nancy and Bob, I'm sorry that it took so long for me to answer your letter, but you didn't have the right address on it, you see I'm in a rest home in Belmore now, trying to recover from the shock of finally getting your class out of school, you know for about 12 years there I didn't think that you were going to make it. Well to get on now with what the kids are doing, I'm surprised but they have done very well. I imagine you have been reading in papers about a Professor Audy Myers, yes, this is the Walter Myers that was in your class, I guess he got this nickname because everything he invented is AUDY-MATIC . Then there is Dick Wink, he finally got his wish for becoming Mayor, at least that's what I think he meant in his last letter, he said that he was the head boy at the Town Hall in Toledo now, he also said that Sharon Dubbs was working there too, she must be his secretary. Ronnie Smith owns the Paramount Theater in Toledo now, he attributes his success to the experience he received at the Star Theater in Deshler in his younger days. You should be very proud of your classmates, remember I always told you that if you studied real hard you would get good jobs when you graduated, and here is sure proof of it, because four of my best students are now professional wrestlers, they wrestle in exhibition bouts all over the country, they fight tag team style, Kenny Scholl and his wife Marguerite Scholl, the former Marguerite Hoops, fighting against Nature Girl Shirley Oberlitner, and her husband, Vernon Panning. Virginia and Sharon Koppenhofer have done well for themselves, they are slowly running Koppenhofer Brothers out of business; they call themselves Koppenhofer Sisters and they specialize in five legged Kangaroo meat. Ervin Hastedt owns a little clothing store in Holgate, Ohio now, he features clothing for TWINS , I can't possibly see how he can make any profit though, it takes so many things to dress his own five sets. John Tussing has done well for himself, he is now Chief of Police in Westhope, I think it's wonderful that he followed in his Grandfather's footsteps. Howard Ward is director of a female quartet, I believe they call themselves The Yung-mann Sisters . I don't know how he ever got this job but it seems he has connections with one of the girls. I always expected Gloria Thurston to be the one in your class to travel to foreign lands, and sure enough she's in Australia now running an ostrich ranch, her husband Dick Bertz, smuggles her very best plumes across the ocean to their dear friend, Ruth Meienburg, the famous fan dancer. Pat Casey is running a Muscle building school in Deweyville, Don Hogrefe is her special model thot she uses for all advertising purposes. The name of Don Stanfield now tops the social register in New York. A prominent writer of commercials for the PEDIGREED FLEA POWDER COMPANY , he attributes his success to his well known song hit Oh Scratchie My Itchie. Professor Donald Hoops is spending most of his time in Kentucky upon having completed his discovery of making Moon-shine in half-the-time . Jerry Straley, Esq. is now a prominent junk dealer in Belmore, Ohio. Calvin Courtney is teaching bookkeeping at the University of Deweyville. Virginia Ruskey is driving a hot rod racer at Ft. Miami race track, I wonder how she got that job, I hear that she has pull with the boss, her husband. I suppose you've heard of the new type of mashed potatoe that is on sale in all the leading stores now, well guess who invented it? None other than your old classmate, Tom Knoke. He just plants them under the new Highway Super 6, that runs through Deshler and they come out mashed. Ted Knight is very busy in his new enterprise, he now runs a rest home for old broken down football players. Dick Moses is now romping the country with his all girl basketball team, they call themselves The Bouncing Babes of '72 , some of his featured attractions are, Marilyn Bevo Francis Courtney, Vera Charlie Share Bowser, and their own referees, Clara Cold-ren and Arlene Hoops with Kenny Hoops, as head cheerleader Roger Gardner now owns a bird seed factory, his feed is sure to make your birds sing in 90 days or your money back It has worked wonders on him. Dick Papoi teaches Drivers Training in Deshler, he also owns 99 per cent of the stock in General Motors My how that boy has changed his mind since his younger days. I'm so glad to hear that you're writing books now, Nancy and Bob, you know that there's another author in your class also, Marian Yungmann, maybe you've read her latest Western thriller, Mother Get Off The Stove You Know You're Too Old To Ride The Range. My nurse just came in to put me back in my straight jacket, so I had better sign off, by the way you ought to know her she was a member of your class, Jeanette Burner. As soon as school started in the fall, our new coach, Mr. Martin Smith, started his cross-country team. They had a fair year with a record of one win and five losses. Four of the five losses were to teams who placed in the top five teams in the state. Captain Tom Boyer ran in the district contest at Toledo and came in twentieth among all the runners. He was eligible to go to the state meet, but did not go. After a very successful baseball and cross-country season we started basketball practice. Mr. Smith, who was also our basketball coach, started to work on us. After the first three games, Mr. Smith was replaced by Mr. Parratt. We then pulled ourselves together and won nine straight games before losing out in the Christmas Tourney. We kept pounding in the points and when the season was over we had a record of sixteen wins and five losses. In the Henry County Tournament, we drew McClure, and won that one by a score of seventy-three to forty-one. In our next game we were defeated by a strong Holgate team by a score of seventy-one to sixty-one. After this defeat we pulled ourselves together again and beat Mai into by a score of fifty-six to forty-eight. They put up a good fight, but Deshler's steady shooting and rebounding was too much for them. Deshler then had to play Florida. We played our best game of the tournament and won by a slight margin of seventy-seven to fifty-three. We then played Hamler to see who would go to the District tournament. After a very hard fight we lost by a score of fifty-four to fifty-two. With the season over, we had a record of eighteen wins and seven losses. Compliments of COCA-COLA CO. Dick is the toughest rebounder on the squad. He is a good team player and a good defensive man. He teams up with Ward and Christman to make a lot of sucker shots. HOWARD WARD—A Senior and plays forward. A good rebound and tip-in man. He was the pivot man most of the season. He will be missed a lot next year. TED KNIGHT—Plays guard and is a Senior this year. A good defensive player and long shot artist. He teams up with Hoops to start a lot of plays. MELVIN HOOPS—A Junior and plays guard. Melvin is a steady player. He is a good guard and is a good shot from outside. FRANK HOGREFE—A Sophomore and plays forward. Here is a boy with a future in basketball. He is a good passer, a dead shot, and a good defensive man. ROGER GARDNER—A Senior and plays forward. A boy whose heart and soul is in basketball. He is a fast man and a good shot. BOB JOHNSON—Plays forward and is a Senior. He is a fast aggressive player. He didn't play too much this season, but he made the regulars play hard in practice. CALVIN COURTNEY—The tallest man on the team at 6'2 and plays center. His 6'2 frame helped the team on the backboards during the season. VERNIE TUSSING—A Sophomore and plays forward. He is a coming player. He is a good team player and defensive man, and will be a great help to future Pirates. ROGER TRENKAMP—Plays center and is a Sophomore. An aggressive rebounder, good team player, and a real prospect for future Deshler varsity. LOWELL WALTHER—A Sophomore and plays guard. Here is a real fighter and rebounder. He is another great prospect for the future Pirates. PETE PARSONS—A Junior and plays guard. Pete is a good set shot from out in front. He is a good passer and should help the Pirate varsity in the next year. DICK PERRY—A Junior and plays guard. He is a good player and should make a name for himself on the varsity next year. BOB MAAS—A Junior and plays forward. This is our Kentucky addition to the team and we hope some of the Great Kentucky basketball comes with him.
