This came upon us when the Sophomores made the girls wear overalls and shirts backwards; the boys had to wear one of their mother's dresses. A string of moth balls hung around our necks, and we wore a sign—Green Freshman—on our backs0 However, the Sophomores regained our friendship that same night by giving us a hayride� This was held at Spangler s farm where we enjoyed a weiner roast, not to mention the cider 111 1 191+9----We entered our Sophomore year and remained the largest class totaling 52� Frank Weasel and Gene Gourley were new students. Three of our Freshman classmates left us. Cath- erine Cavanaugh and Robert Wink moved and Melvin Hill withdrew Miss Kahle advised us through the year and we again elected officers. Here everyone enjoyed games, dancing, and eating. At the turn of the half century, we turned into a class of 48 Juniors. We gained Gene Trenkamp, Robert Wink, and Sarah Jane Fisher. Paul Cordes, Gene Thompson, and Jerry Wolfe with- drew, Gene Gourley moved, and Robert lulfs and Dick Williams joined the Array. We expected a very bv.-vy year, so two advisors. As the school year neared an end, we started slaving away on the most important occasion for any Junior-.-The Junior-Benior Banquet', The date wa set for May 4, ’ e decorated the gym us- ing a Hawiian Theme, with palm trees, grass hurts, jungle, and of course, we couldn't leave out the Hula Girl!I At 12:00 we went to the Star Theater to enjoy a movie. 1951 slips upon us and we'v.e been told that is the year we are to graduate, so we take it that we are at last the Seniors, 1+3 of us, the largest cl-ss ever to graduate from Deshler High School. The Sophomores led by '..'inning most of the games and allowing their opponents to win only three. The following evening the Sophomores gave a party for the Freshmen in the high school auditorium. He has a strong determination to win, and will produce points when they are needed BILL WILLIAMS--Is a Senior and plays guard on the squad Bill is the playmaker on the team, and he has done a wonderful job in pullin' the team together and welding it into a smooth-working unit. His attitude and will to win is another reason for the Deshler victory record Bill is known as Mr Reliable, MARVIN HOOPS—Is a Senior and plays guard. Marv helps Williams set-up the plays and when the offense has trouble getting through he lets fly with his left-handed shot for a bucket He is an excellent defensive man ROGER KOPPEHHOFER —A Junior and plays forward.- Roger is a clever ball handler, has an excellent back- handed pass that he works with the center Bruback for buckets. Good feints—Speed and excellent footwork are some of his abilities. On defonse he teams with Meyer to steal the ball and set up fast breaks with Meyer and Williams, FRANKLIN BRUBACK--The center and a Junior, Frank is the tallest man on the squad at 6«2 . He does a lot of work on the bankboards—uses a pivot shot and tip-ins to score. He is a good team player and playmaker—fits in well with the rest of the squad, LEROY HOOPS--A Junior and a forward on the team. Leroy is an excellent man to send in when the going is tough. He loves to play agressive ball and is a good shot, DON TUSSING—A Junior and a guard for the Pirates. Don has a good long shot and is an excellent man to put in the ball game when we need some points. RICIL RD BERTZ--A Sophomore, playing either forward or center. Dick is a good bankboard man, excellent team player, and good ball handler BOB BURKZR--A Junior playing guard on the team. Bob is a heady ball player, and a good playmaker. He has made the squad work hard in practice and kept them sharp for games. He deserves a lot of credit for a lot of hard work, HOWARD WARD--A Sophomore playing center, Howard has a good jump, pivot shot. He works hard, and is a good man on bankboard control. Page 52B ear of Sports The Deshler baseball team, under the diligent coaching of Mr, Parratt, had a very successful season in 1950. We played 8 games and were victorious in the same number. When the spring season opens we will play in a county tournament, but regardless of the outcome, we will represent Deshler at the district tourna- ment in Defiance. After their undefeated baseball season, A. R. Wyse started training his soon-to-be-fanous Pirates for basketball. We start- ed to climb the ladder to success with our first game in which we defeated Ottawa Parochial 56 to Z+1. We added 19 more victories, which gave us a total, of 2C straight wins., As no one else could compete with this record we walked off with league laurels. The Pirates didn't leave their faithful followers down either_____they took the county tournament by defeating Holgate and McClure and winding up with a thrilling :i5 to ;+0 victory over Ridgeville. Our next step was the district tournament au Defiance. The Pirates gave a spectacuxar pj eformance to the hundreds of spectators by eliminating Delv-a pc to . .t+. The still unconquered Pirates kept right on with their victory march, by defeating Latty, Columbus Grove, and Ottoville,which paved the way for the regional at Tol- edo. They dropped their regional game to Grand Rapids 63 to 1+0. The Basketeers established a number of records this year: 27 straight wins-----a team total of 1777 points scored in 28 games, first county league trophy, first county tourney trophy, first time to regional. They had a team average of 63.5 points per game while allow- ing their opponents an average of 1+1.6 points per game. Sharp-shooting Willie Meyer won the game foul shooting tro- phy with a .675 percentage. He also won the foul shooting contest with 1+7 straight. Co-Captains for the year were Bill Williams and Willie Meyer. The Reserves also finished their season undefeated. This gives us high hopes for next year. Deshler also won the Christmas invitational tournament by defeating Ottawa Parochial and McComb. The Seniors who have competed in Sports are: Bill Williams Willie Meyer, Marvin Hoops, Roger Boyer, Arnie Ehlers, Paul Mat-’ chett, and Marvin Koppenhofer. They will be sorely missed on the Deshler teams for 1951-52. The Jr. High Basketball team also made a fine showing for themselves by winning 15 games and losing 2. Both defeats were at the hands of our old rival, Hamler. The Freshman team won 12 games and lost 3 during the season. They lost a heart-breaking game to Holgate in the county tourna- ment. By this time all the players have been congrc.tulated by all the fans, on their basketball playing. But now is the time both players AND fans should be congratulated on something just as im- portant, if not more so. That is the sportsmanship they both have shown throughout the year. The object of the council la to discuss and suggest plans and ideas to improve the school in any and all ways. This year 3uch things as assembly programs, a student council dance, and suggestions regarding pupil-teacher relationship of discipline and student behavior were discussed. They sponsored the buying af a popcorn machine for use at basketball games and other school functions after the assurance from the Junior Class of a contribution of fifty dollars toward its cost. This done, we went into our regular activities. During the fall we took some field trips to various points of interest. :very boy selected a project which he would make and enter at the County and State Pair. At one of our regular meetings, it was decided that the name of the chapter would be changed from Corn City to Deshler. This spring, Deshler and Hauler Chapters Executive Board met at Ramler to discuss the forming of a County P.P.A. Chaoter. Both chapters approved of forming a County P.P.A. It was decided to iold a meeting of three P.P.A. members from each chapter to discuss the forming of the County P.P.A. at Deshler. rlans are now being made and it seems that this organization is very promising. To end up this year we held elections of new officers and had a dance on April 7, 1951. The F.H.A. were our guests. Literally speaking, everyone got a big bang out of it. The leading characters were four suitcases that looked so much alike that when their owners got them mixed, the result was not onlv uproariously funny, but highly exciting because in one of the suitcases was a time bomb,that would blow anyone who tried to open it, to smithereens, and in another was a valuable pearl necklace.
