V e have had at least twelve years of school life J but none of us know how many years of life's school lie ahead of us. The following is a brief summary of our last four years in school life. 'Way back in 19i(.6, we entered our freshman year of high school. After we had gained eight new students, v e numbered thirty-eight strong. The new students were as follows: Harold Gobrogge, Helen Imbrock, Paul Inselman, Ruth Mohring, Kay Mont- haven, Irene Schwiebert, Pat Straley, and Marvin Sundernan. Mr, Parrott was our advisor during this trying year, and we elected the following officers to help defend us. President-------Mary Ann Blankemeyer Vice President--Lois Spangler Secretary-------Marilyn King Treasurer-------Walter Gordon News Reporter---John Mitchell Finally, one bright October day, the main event of our school year happened--that's right, it was initiation day. It might have been a masquerade party, for the way v e were dressed--girls had half of their hair in pigtails (each tied with a different color of ribbon), and the other half in curlers. V e couldn't wear any make up, and in place of our usual dresses; v e wore one of our mother's old dresses and carried a bushel basket v ith our books in them. The boys also wore one of their mother's dresses, and they had their hair up in pin curls. We finally advanced to the next step toward graduation, and that was the sophomore year. We now had thirty-five in our grade. The decrease was due to Clara Bates, Roderick Fosnow, Lee Neiling, and John Sandmann's withdrawing, and Lawrence Cavenaugh, Dolores Fletcher, and Dale Newell's moving to another tov n. Mr. Wyse was chosen for our advisor this year. V e made them dress quite conically, and then treated them to an old fashioned hay ride and v einer roast. Then it was 19li-8, and we were juniors,' V e now had thirty- five students in our grade. V e gained Ldith Fisher, and Marvin Sunderman withdrew. The next project for this year was to choose a class play This was hard because it was the first tine we had ever nresented a play, but we finally chose hill- billy Courtship, a 3 act farce, and presented it October 22 in the school gym. The most important event in any junior's life is the Junior-Senior Banquet, and this was what we were preparing for next. Our class decided to have as our theme something a little bit different from the other years,and so we chose Ching Ming as the tl:eme. We decorated the gym in Chinese style with a rickshaw, pagoda, and a Chinese garden and for lights we used Japanese paper lanterns. After much hard work, our dreams really came true on May when we had the banquet. Here we are seniors,now, and the most brilliant class in school. Our small senior class numbers thirty. A few changes occurred during the summer such as Pat Brown moved, Bob Sliauck entered, and Sarah Fisher haa become ill, and she could not re- enter. We had all been so well behaved the past eleven years that v e decided to really break loose and have fun this last year, and Miss Rosemary Kahle is the one who really suffers be- cause she is our advisor. We then had to decido our class colors, flower, and motto. After much arguing we finally agreed to have blue and white as our class colors, and for graduation the girls and boys would both wear blue gowns with white collnrs, and blue caps with white tassels. We chose a yellow rose as our class flower, and for our motto v e selected Out of School Life Into Life' s School. Before v e realized it, the “time nad come To choose cur Senior Class play. C. for our class trip and re- turned home just in time for the Junior-Senior Banquet. They Journeyed into the world to meet Lady Destiny. Not knowing what their future was they faced the world with great hope. Each one was anxious to travel his chosen path but yet sorrowful to leave his childhood behind him. Now take your thoughts back to the year 1970 when thi6 triumphant class was in the prime of its life. Let us tell you what each member of the class is accomplishing during his life time. Helen Leveck is now wrestling at the Sports Arena. Her traveling companion is a retired wrestler known to many of us as Nature Boy. Helen's trade name is Nature G-irl. Irene Schvriebert, famous jockey, has won the Kentucky Derby for 3 years in a row. Next year she plans to use a horse. Avis Scholl is now running a newspaper In Deshler called The Deshler Blade . It has a wide circulation due to their ace-reporter, Bob Koppenhofer, who is always hot on the trail of interesting news. Bob got his early start in newspaper writing back in journalism class in his senior year. Television now has something to look at. Lorna Hogrefe, blond beauty of the '50 graduating class, has a television show of her own. Paul Burner, who is head of the shoeshine union, is sponsoring this show, Marvin Meyer has bought West Hope Tavern and is serving the drinks himself. The bachlerettes of the Senior Class, mainly Pat Straley, Lois Spangler, Lois Franz, Marilyn King, Mary Blankemeyer, and Bubbles Rutter are opening up a music store in Homier. The store is to be christened The Music Lovers . If the store proves to be a success it will be due to the fact that the girls made many friends in the Hamler area during their high school days. Walter Gordon, famed opera singer, will appear at the Sports Arena singing in the title role of Carmen. Walter has worked hard to attain this role. Joan Osenbaugh and Bill Koppenhofer were married 5 years ago. But Joan is disillusioned in her married life due to the fact that Bill is not ambitious. Joan is now taking in washings while Bill is working hard trying to get to Napoleon once a week to get an unemployment check. Page 22 John Breece Is now playing the role of Tarzan in a new series of Jungle pictures. Another old classmate is also co-starred in this picture, it is Donald Newton in the envied role of the ape. Bob Smith, now a famous singer has been promoted to Enzio Pinzo's part in South Pacific and the play is still going strong John Mitchell, who has gained fame in his fashion, is now engaged as a butcher and proved a regular cut-up to his customers. Paul Inselman is an owner and distributer of intoxicating beverages. Paul does not make much profit at this business but he enjoys himself immensely. Ruth Mohring and Helen Imbrock now have a large funeral home. They got an early start in this business by attending all the German dances where they saw everbody laid out. Vic Petersen, famed debator against the use of liquor will appear at the Eagles Hall Tuesday night. The pro and con of the liquor subject will be discussed. Edith Fisher will speak for the use of liquor. This should prove an interesting debate. Donald Flick, famous author, has written a new book called OH . The book is a smash hit, breaking all book sales. This wes due mostly to the talent of Donald's press-agent, Ella Young who is having all the books covered with 5 dollar bills. Bob Shauck, a famous football player on the basketball floor at Deshler Hi, is now working in a chorus line. He is now known as Shocking Shauck. Prof. Harold Gobrogge, head of the Atomic Bomb plant, has been promoted to Prof. Einstein’s position. Prof. Gobrogge is able to explain the Theory of Relativity. Until recently Kay Monthaven owned a goat herd in the Swiss Alps where she was known as Nanny Monthaven. But due to financial difficulties she was forced into the flower business. She now grows dandelions wholesale to be used at weddings. Miss Rosemary Kahle, the unfortunate adviser of the Senior Class who worked and slaved many years to get tnis class through high school had a nervous-break down the day after Commencement which was caused by the great relief of getting rid of us. And so goes the legend of the 1950 graduating class. But remember, do not pattern your lives after this class but seek out your own abilities, and keep the same spirit, hope and courage in your hearts as the 1950 graduating class. That loss was to Efrlgate, the first game of the season by a score of 5 to Jp. Errors cost us the game there. Following the final baseball game Coach Tfyse started us through a very successful basketball season. We lost the first game to Holgate by a score of 39 to 38« We then won two out of our next five games. Then our team started clicking, for we won ten in a row until we hit the tough Leipsic team and we were beaten f?0 to lj.1. We went into the county tournament by defeating our first two opponents, Florida I4.9 to 36 and Ilalinta 50 to I4.5. We then took a beating from the Ridgeville Falcons, the County Champs, by a score of 57 to 52. In our final game of the season we had a chance to go to- the district meet if we won,, but after gaining a ten point lead at the half our team collasped badly and Hairiier won the game I4.2 to JpO. This ended a very successful basketball season for Deshler. The Pirates also won the Christmas invitational tournament by defeating Portage and Cygnet. The seniors who will be lost through graduation this year are: Paul Inselman, Robert Shauck, Vic Petersen, Walter Gordon, Don Flick and Paul Burner. The Jr.High baseball team played only one game, bbt wnn over H0igate by a score of 6 to 2. The jr. High team did just as well in basketball when they ended the season with 20 wins and 2 loses. They lost to Glen- wood of Findlay and to Wauseon. The Jr. High team then went on to win the county championship. Deshler was host to an invita- tional tournament in which they also captured top honors. The Freshmen team played 12 games, winning 9 and losing 3, They made up for the loses by winning the county championship� The final game was played with Holgate. To the teams of the coming years we wish the best luck possible. To the students we sincerely hope that they will continue to be good sports and back their team through all con- ditions. The play was given April lL, 1950 in the school auditorium. A handful of heirs, Kim Waller (’ alter Gordon), his friend, Tommy Upton(John Mitchell), Diana Diilhart(Lois Franz), Diana's aunt, Hiss Marilla Dalhart(Kay Monthaven), Mrs. Kitty Pike(Lois Spangler), and her daughter, Iona Fike(Beverly Rutter) met on a stormy night in weird old Creepy Castle to hear the reading of an eccentric will, and to hunt for the precious star-sapphire. Bridget(Patricia Straley), the comical Irish house-keeper warned all to leave, for anybody who remains all night in Creepy Castle —-DIES LAUGHING! II The heirs refused to budge—and the ghast- ly things started happening.Augustus Caesar Jones(Robert Shaucki a negro handy-man, Peachie Chrysanthemum Jones(Mary Ann Blanke- meyer), a negro cook, Levi Hackett(Paul Burner), the village lawyer, and Otto Swartz(Robert Kcpoenhofer), a truck gardener, provided the comedy of the play. The ghostgirl(Avis Scholl) and ghostman(Donald Flick) gurgled and groaned, typewriters are ma- nipulated by invisible hands, and portraits sobbed salt tears. Directed by Miss Rosemary Kahle and Miss Martha Kahle JUNIOR CLASS PLAY An appreciative audience of over 600 witnessed the Junior Class play, Grandma's Best Years , in the school auditorium October 21, 19 9- The play was full of laughter and at times of suspense. Grandma, played by Ramona Breece, was a sweet old lady from the country. Nancy Purcell, played the part of the mother who was trying to get into society. Joan Flowers was her younger daughter whose best chum was Connie Gaede. Tob Courtney,his gangster moll wife, Lynne Rutter, and tough daughter, Ruby Phillips were very effective as crooks after a beautiful pictura But they couldn't quite match the ingenuity of Paul Matchett and Bert Reinhardt. The spice of romance was lent to the play by Bill Suber in his wolfish part as he made love to Betty Christ- man, the older daughter, who was in love with Bert Reinhardt. Miss Quelch, a sophisticated school teacher, played by Jean Fee- han, and Evelyn Yungmann playing the part of Mrs. Carlson, and son Edwin, Bill Suber, were the ritzy weekend guests whom Mrs. Abbott had invited to her home. The mild old cousin Oscar , Uillle Meyer, left about as suddenly as he came after being humilited by his forgotten relatives.
