Academic Achievers DSMS provides an opportunity for students to pursue their academic talents beyond the regular classroom activities. A few of these activities pre- sented on this page are the Pledge Team, Academic Bowl, Youth Authors Day, and the writing contest sponsored by junior Achievement. The 1987 sev- enth grade academic bowl team was the first place district winner. We had two eighth grade students who won 2nd and 3rd place prizes on the Junior Achievement writing contest. Desert Shadows is proud ofthe opportunities offered to students to excell to their potential. All Stars Say o To Drugs! For the past two years a group called the All Stars has been help- ing and improving our school. The All Stars improve our school by improving themselves, All Stars are working on the special project this year, Say No To Drugs. The All Stars learn refusal skills, and other techniques for saying No. All Stars is an important group that has helped students to be polite, pre- pare for the future, be confident, and be a success. In the spring of eighty- seven the Elk's Club sponsored a Say No To Drugs essay contest for the Paradise Valley School District. The winner was Kristen Perron. She attends our school, DSMS. The essay contest winners of schools received Say No To Drugs t-shirts. The district winner's name was placed on the traveling trophy on display at that year's winning school.
