A team of school administrators from other school districts across the country evaluated our school. The evaluation of our school was excellent so it was recommended that DSMS be given an award. Our principal, Mr. William Cooper, went to Washington, D.C. to receive the award and hear President Reagan's address. You're here because your school is a part of what's right with American education. Excellence is on the rise in our schools and drugs are on their way out. Schools like yours are showing the country how to achieve excellence by setting high standards, maintaining discipline, and emphasizing the basics. Secretary of Education, Williamj. Bennett, told the recipients, All of our students deserve schools as good as yours - all of the schools honored today have exemplary methods of teaching about our republican form of government as framed by the constitution. DSMS has indeed reached Excellence in Education. Above: ASU Coach Dan Devine with DSMS cheerleaders cheering, No to drugs! FACULTY Principal- Deva and Mr. Cooper, good friends Mr. Cooper accepts the award as one of the top ten schools in the state. W William Cooper Desert Shadows Middle School is a great place for kids to go to school, said Mr. Cooper. Mr. Cooper has been in education for 28 years. Over these 28 years he has been a consultant, a teacher, and a principal. Mr. Cooper has been prin- cipal for 17 years. He has been an educator in Quincy, Illinois, Arlington, Illinois, and here in Arizona. When asked why he became a principal Mr. Coo- per replied, As a principal I was able to have a greater say in what would happen to the kids in my school. Mr. Cooper feels kids are important, no kids - no paychecks. What Mr. Cooper likes best about DSMS is the involvement and cooperation. He says the staff, the kids, and the parents make DSMS what it is. Mr. Cooper always has time for the students, Please excuse the interruption. sta jenny plaque recognizing DSMS as one of the top schools in the nation. Dr. john Van Luven, or just Dr. Van, is a very dedicated person. He lives for the kids. He's been the assistant principal at DSMS for eleven years. All the kids, parents, and staff really like him. He enjoys talking with kids and helping them. He's always willing to listen. He is a unique individual with warmth and a sense of humor. His display of stuffed animals in his office is a real conversation piece. One of his favorites is an armadillo named Amanda Fleabag. Dr. Van encourages students to do their best. He demonstrates that he cares about each stu- dent. He enjoys viewing sports events, helping student council, or just being with students. He is part of the excellence in the educational process at Desert Shadows Middle School. 1 iii: ' Assistant Principal wen u Now hear this . . . Smile for the picture! the annual magic show. As the leaders ofthe school we guide the school to success, and our leaders, Dr. Van and Mr. Cooper, back us all the way. As this yearbook holds the memories of all our eighth grade dreams, we can look back and say that this was a year in the life at D.S.M.S. Here at D.S.M.S. we strive for achievement and our students make it happen. As you look through the eighth grade class of 338, as you see photos of people making it happen, keep in mind a school with no pride cannot be a school at all. The eighth grade pride shines bright. Ducktails and Bobbysox was directed by the music teachers, Mrs. Segall and Mr. Thompson, and had great actors and a beautiful sounding chorus. The play was staged back in the '50's and is very humorous. This musical is a brief reminder of the senior days of high school, the football games, poodle skirts, and bobbysox. In the '87 season they were unscored upon, the only team in our league to do itl Coach Hackworth first told the girls they might set a record during a rainy, cold game. He told them, You play through the weather. Put it out of your mind. If we continue we might break a record! At first he thought it might 'jlNX them if he told them, but he let it slip, There was no 'jINX , however, and they broke the record. The girls did not think they could be scored on and therefore they! weren't. Coach Hackworth also said it was his best team ever and that he was very proud ofthe girls. At times there were tears in my eyes, he adds jokingly, but I hope the girls didn't see. He said the girls gave 110921. All of DSMS is very proud ofthe girls, Above right - Aimee scores!
