, , FOREWORD During the l966-67 school year, the Cartwright School Board of Trustees announced that two junior high schools would be built for the district's seventh and eighth graders. During that year the faculties and staffs of the planned schools met several times for the purpose of out- lining school policies. Distinguished members of Arizona universities participated in these meetings. All aspects of the schools' purposes, goals and activities were discussed and developed. On February 7, l967, the contract was signed for the construction of the schools. The two junior high schools were named by students who submitted suggested names to student councils at the elementary schools On March 4 and 5, 1968, students from Starlight Park School, Holiday Park School, and john F. Long School packed up their books, desks, chairs, maps--everything, put them on trucks and moved to Desert Sands. A new school was immediately in full operation. 2

DEDICATION This yearbook is dedicated to Mr. Ray C. Davis, Principal of Desert Sands junior High School. Mr. Davis, a native Arizonan, received his Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees from Arizona State University, and has been on the Cartwright School District Staff since 1957. He partici- pated in the earliest stages of planning Desert Sands long before the school opened and has served as its first principal since March, 1968. Mr. Davis is an example of kindness and patience, an inspiring leader to all his faculty and staff. I-Ie is a man of sincere devotion to the principles of education, unceasing energy in performing the duties of his position, a most capable leader and executive, a friend and counselor to all students. It is with respect and gratitude that the l969 SCORPION is dedicated to Mr. Davis.
