Tech Receives New Principal 1981-82 will be remembered as the year when Tech High School ' s future directions were changed. By 1986 we will become a part of all of the schools in Des Moines. At that time, our students will no longer be Tech High grads. We will be an extension of other schools and students will attend our programs on a one-half day basis. There were several possible ways to make budget cuts at the high school level. Because of severe budget problems, there were some who thought vocational - technical education could be eliminated altogether. When the final decision was reached, vocational tech- nical education was saved, but Tech High School will no longer exist except in the hearts of so many who have been touched by its spirit. Many protested the proposed change. Students staged a walkout that brought more pressure to bear on an already difficult situation. We had four hundred stu- dents suspended as a result of that walkout. It was a blow that was crushing to our spirit and togetherness. In spite of that, we began to work together and got back on track . Every student in this yearbook will even- tually have the opportunity to graduate from Tech High School. The last Tech graduation will be for the class of 1986. Those students are presently eighth graders. And beyond that, we plan to continue to offer a vocational - technical program second to none. I wish to express my graditude to the students and staff for their excellent contributions to Tech during this stressful year. I am confident our students are better prepared for life and self-reliance because of the efforts of our staff. Hopefully, the best testimony for Tech will always be exemplified by the service, productivity, and fine citizenship of our graduates. Because our graduates will continue to be such citizens, the spirit of Tech High will live on. Mr. Larry Gillespie, vice principal Dr. Paul Devin, principal Mr. Wayne Webber, vice principal
