Text from Pages 1 - 178 of the 1982 volume:

It has been 40 years since Tech High, the first technical high school for Des Moines, was established. Since then Tech has con- tinued to excel in vocational-education and student career opportunities. Tech High was first established in 1942 in the building which was formerly known as West High School. 1982 Engineer Des Moines Technical High School Des Moines, Iowa i Des Moines Tribune on noon. Tech Receives New Principal 1981-82 will be remembered as the year when Tech High School ' s future directions were changed. By 1986 we will become a part of all of the schools in Des Moines. At that time, our students will no longer be Tech High grads. We will be an extension of other schools and students will attend our programs on a one-half day basis. There were several possible ways to make budget cuts at the high school level. Because of severe budget problems, there were some who thought vocational - technical education could be eliminated altogether. When the final decision was reached, vocational tech- nical education was saved, but Tech High School will no longer exist except in the hearts of so many who have been touched by its spirit. Many protested the proposed change. Students staged a walkout that brought more pressure to bear on an already difficult situation. We had four hundred stu- dents suspended as a result of that walkout. It was a blow that was crushing to our spirit and togetherness. In spite of that, we began to work together and got back on track . Every student in this yearbook will even- tually have the opportunity to graduate from Tech High School. The last Tech graduation will be for the class of 1986. Those students are presently eighth graders. And beyond that, we plan to continue to offer a vocational - technical program second to none. I wish to express my graditude to the students and staff for their excellent contributions to Tech during this stressful year. I am confident our students are better prepared for life and self-reliance because of the efforts of our staff. Hopefully, the best testimony for Tech will always be exemplified by the service, productivity, and fine citizenship of our graduates. Because our graduates will continue to be such citizens, the spirit of Tech High will live on. Patty Virden practicing her typing skills. 83 Electronics Electronics is mainly concerned with radio, TV, and computer equipment repair. Students must take electricity first before coming into this area. This core area is popular with faculty and students, for here they can have minor repairs done on that radio, that TV set, or cassette player. Mr. Dave Hutson is the instruc- tor. 84 Industrial Electricity This core area teaches house and building wiring, motors and motor controls, and application and theory of industrial electri- city. The core area worked on the Tech house, wiring it. We also are in the process of building a solar panel as a project, says Mr. Richard Pennington, who is the industrial electricity instruc- tor. The students are also involved in building personal projects such as amplifiers, power sup- plies, strobe lights, and other electrical devices. 85 Health Services The Health Services core area is planned for all students who are interested in one of the over 700 medical or para-medical pro- fessions. Through the co-operation of the Des Moines Area Community College a special course in nursing assistant is offered dur- ing the summer which leads to the 120- hour nursing asistant certification. Mr. Arthur Long, Mr. Gary Curtis and Mr. Gary Cameron are the instructors. Carol Pauscher and Darlene Miller experimenting with carbohydrates. ■I Junior Lisa Everly checking her book for directions. 86 Bev Jennings, Debby Wignall and Kathy Clinkonbeard experimenting. Licensed Practical Nursing The practical nursing pro- gram has been carefuly de- signed to train the students in basic nursing principles and related subjects. It is a demanding 72-week high school program aimed at helping the student become a safe, competent begin- ning practical nurse. Highlights each year are the rewarding experiences the students receive as they enter into new hospital situ- ations. Classroom and clinical in- structors are Mrs. L. Skin- ner, Mrs. M. Trujillo, and Mrs. J. Reames. First row: Cynthia DeHoet, Cathy Ridout, Karen Leo, Rhonda McClelland, Julie Caulk, Beth Easter, DeAnn Fusaro, Chris Benda. Second Row: Diane Wright, Karen Godfry, Sherry Lewis. Senior Beth Easter demonstrating how to give a shot. This is the area that is responsi- ble for the plans of the Tech house each year. Students who are successful in this area have no trouble finding co-op jobs and later, full-time em- ployment. The instructor is Mr. Jack Druart. Jonathon O ' Daye and instructor Jack Druart. Jonathon O ' Daye, Jeff Maples, Andre Williams, and Mark Madison. 88 Machine Drafting The main purpose of Machine Drafting is to develop the student ' s ability to visualize objects in three dimensions, draw clearly and ac- curately, and to develop drafting skills. This area made numerous draw- ings for the adult machine shop and the high school machine shop. These drawings were then read and made into useful equipment. Mr. Robert Van Arkel is the in- structor of the area. Junior Donna Garrison looking it up. Junior Robin Lincoln drawing it out. Shawn Kelly thinking through the problem. 89 Welders 90 Sheet Metal 91 Machine Shop The objective of Machine Shop is to impart knowledge and skills in adequate quan- tity to qualify a student for job entry in one of the machine shop related fields and to enhance any opportunity to continue an education in the industrial or academic scene. One project of the students in this area is to maintain Tech athletic department ' s weight machine. Mr. Ralph Snyder is the instructor. 92 Woods The Woods Trades core area prepares the students to enter the carpentry cabinetmak- ing field. Tech house number 9 was finished this year by the sen- ior carpentry class doing all the rough and finishing work on the house. The cabinet making class installed the kitchen cabinets, tile, countertops, and then built the next set of kitchen cabinets for house number 10. Students also built a piece of furniture for their own. The sophomore class built night stands and constructed a mock house and learned blue- print reading. The instructors are Mr. Paul Hindel, Mr. Russ Fisher, and Mr. Jim Hashman. 93 Varsity Football Players Row One: Charles Bruce, Randy Erickson, Randy Patrick, Mark Thompson, Timothy Whitehead, Julius Carter, Steve Brown. After World War II, the enrollment in the technical high school grew more rapidly, and because of this, a larger building would soon be needed. Since it was learned in 1951, that the Solar Aircraft Company planned to vacate the building at 18th Street and Grand Avenue, which would be an excellent facility for a growing vocational School, the Des Moines School District purchased and remodeled the building. And Tech, with it ' s enrollment of over 2,000 students, moved in. Even after 40 years of progress and excellent vocational technical training Tech is faced with a major disappointment. Later in the 70 ' s the enrollment in the high schools began to drop and the School Board at that time decided that one high school needed to be closed. In the spring of 1980, the Board came up with the idea of moving the Tech facilities to North high and merge the two schools. But a tax levy had to be voted on because of the cost of having to re-do North to accommodate Tech ' s heavy equipment. On September 9, 1980, the voters of Des Moines turned down the tax levy. During the summer of 1 981 , the superintendent and central administration came up with the resource center idea. 156 The Internal and External Remodeling of the New Tech Tech - The Finished Product 157 Forty Years of Progress . . . Halted? Tech students, teachers, alumni, parents and the Tech Booster Club voiced their opinions about the resource center concept in meetings with the board. On January 20th, the board listened to protests about the resource center idea. 158 urn On February 4, 1982, the Des Moines School Board voted to phase out the current Tech High program, and by 1986, make the building a resource center for all of the other high schools. After the disappointing news was heard, Tech students and parents began peaceful demon- strations.
