Although, the season didn ' t produce wins, Tech ' s spirit and drive continued. The Girls ' Club and Cheerleaders and other spirited minded organizations and individuals gave Tech many rousing mo- ments of school spirit at pep assemblies and at the games. Coach Gray- don Lappe had to field a team that lacked ex- perience against a much - improved city series schedule. Using sophomores and juniors in the last part of the season, Tech hopes the experience they gained this year will bring vic- tories in 1968. ft Left: Coach Lappe gives the word to an Engineer. The land that will be used is located at 2140 Grand where an apartment house used to stand. The parking lot should be finished and opened to all Tech students by next year. After a three year wait, the School Board donated $5000 for the replacement of Tech ' s trophy case. During the sum- mer the case was built in the lobby for all Tech ' s visitors to see. Before, the case was hidden in a dark hallway, where it was left unnoticed. Everyone agrees that the trophy case adds a bit more beauty to Tech at its present location. i 19 Tech ' s Student Council Leads Student Body 1 I Student Council is a group of students who are interested in serving their school in per- forming active duties. Mr. John Cooper is the sponsor of the talented stage crew who with Mr. Cooper ' s driving force can change Tech ' s stage into what any organization wants. 69 A hearty Thank You, to the many fine young men who participated in athletics at Des Moines Tech, upholding the tradition of fine sportsmanship and fair play. 72 Hoover 49 Newton 66 Dowling 71 Roosevelt 80 North 51 Lincoln 63 Boone 82 Ankeny 90 Lincoln 69 Valley 85 Dowling 60 East 82 North 62 Roosevelt 90 Saydel 45 East 53 South East Polk 71 74 Tech 47 Tech 39 Tech 57 Tech 39 Tech 41 Tech 36 Tech 71 Tech 57 Tech 44 Tech 38 Tech 44 Tech 38 Tech 44 Tech 25 Tech 54 Tech 51 Tech 70 Basketball Team Builds With Juniors And Sophomores LEFT TO RIGHT 52 Bob Barlow. 44 Steve Neofotist. 50 John Manuel. 34 Ray Bnggt. 40 Norman Hughes. 32 Dai Kaufman, 30 Bob Hurt LEFT TO RIGHT 10 Dan Parker. 20 Bill McDonald. 22 Mike Fuller. 12 Larry Hill. 54 Ralph Pilger. 24 Richard Bear. 42 Don Rhone. 14 Ed lx rt9cher 75 Sophomores End Season With Victory LEFT TO RIGHT Ted Brown, Wait Knox, John King, Rutty Olson, Dave Sepesy. Rick Shade The Shade dynasty came to an end when Rick Shade was defeated in his bid to become state champion at 180 pounds. After dominating the wrestling scene in Des Moines for several years the reign of SHADES is now over. If you are any kind of sports buff at all you know that for several years in Des Moines athletics SHADE has meant wrestling. Ron was the first SHADE to wrestle when he wrestled for North High at 180 lbs. Gene was the first SHADE to wrestle for Tech. At 154 lbs. he was city champ, Corning champ, 1st in District meet, and 3rd in the State Meet. George also wrestling 154 was city champ twice while wres- tling for East High. Floyd wrestling at 190 lbs. was city champ, Corning winner, Chariton win- ner, District winner, and took 2nd in the State while wrestling for Tech. Tim at 145 was city champ, District champ, and he holds the honor of being the only SHADE to become STATE champion. Ray, ' 67 graduate, was Corning champ, Chariton champ, 1st in city, 1st in sectional, 1st in District. Rick Shade closed out the SHADE dynasty with a fine performance for the 67-68 season. Tech High is proud of brothers Gene, Floyd, Tim, Ray, and Rick for the fine reputation they gave Tech while competing in athletics here at Tech and wishes them the best of luck in pursuing their goals in life. 79 mmers Get New Coach Wilmer Hokanson SOME SWIMMING SCORES: Tech 13 Tech 23 Tech 18 Tech 22 Tech 17 Tech 30 Tech 23 Tech 31 TECH 53 Roosevelt 80 Hoover 72 North 77 East 73 Ames 78 Lincoln 64 Marshalltown 72 Boone 64 Valley 42 80 Swimmers Have Rough Season; Win One. Several swimmers who played important roles in this year ' s meets, will be back again next year to lead the Engineers in search of victories for their water competition. Sophomore Bob Hudson who is a diver, showed promise during the season by placing 1st in the Lincoln meet, and placing 2nd in fancy diving against Roosevelt. Tech has many interesting and various core areas that teach their pupils skills and trades that will enable them to start working almost immedi- ately after they graduate. They spend three hours out of the regular school day in their areas learning the techniques they will need to find a good paying job. Some extra courses are taken that are advisable or required. Even during school, Tech sends out co-op students who find work before graduation. Tech students have a large advantage because of the vocational training standard in the trade and industry world, of- fered to them. Since Tech has no area limitations, the students who go here came on their own accord, and all of them feel that they are glad they did so. The girls are prepared to become secretaries and business workers. They are required to complete four semes- ters of business machines, and typing. The teachers of this area are Mrs. Day, Mrs. Conner, Miss Agnew, and Miss Farmer. Printing Printing is a hard-working core area at Tech, because the Print Shop prints all the paper and materials for the Des Moines Public School System. Each stu- dent learns how to run the Lino- type, set the composition, run the camera, the offset and letter presses, and also learn bindery work. These students also print up tickets for school activities. 83 Communications Electronics This area teaches its students to become radio station engineers, in- stallers, and how to serv- ice two-way radio equip- ment. They also learn about television receiv- ers and transmitters, in- tercom systems, and hi-fi sets. Food Services Food Service has been teaching students the fundamentals of ordering, preparing and storing food. Any student who graduates from this area can find jobs as waitresses, bakers, hosts or hostesses. Teachers of this area are Mrs. Perry, Mrs. Van Dyke, and Mrs. Lindstrom. 84 Auto Body and Auto Mechanics Auto Mechanics teaches its pupils the parts and functions of the automobile. In Auto Body, the stu- dents learn how to fix and repair automobiles. These two areas you will usually find working side by side. Welding Welding is a core area that was designed to teach safe ways of using electri- cal arc and oxyacetylene equipment. It also gives the boys valuable training for industry. 85 Drafting Started in 1942, Drafting ' s main purpose is to give its pu- pils instruction in machine and structural drawing. After graduation many of the stu- dents can go directly to offices and begin their work. Radio and Television Radio and Television is the most unique core area at Tech. Here the students learn all the inter- esting fundamentals and techniques of the Radio and Television Production. The teacher of this field is Miss Tillery, and the studio sponsor is Mr. Russ Odegaard. Commercial Art Oil painting, fashion designing, and pho- tography are just a few of the skills that the students in the Commercial Art core area learn. These people acquire the techniques to become illustrators for magazines, newspaper ads, and even television. After they leave Tech, many of the students continue to expand their craftsmanship by going to college. The teach- ers of this area are Mr. Al Thomas and Mr. George Jefchak. Computer Programming The students of this core area spend most of their time looking into the face of a machine. They learn how to operate and prepare instruc- tions for the computer and other up- to-date business equipment. Many of them go on as systems operators so that they can learn more about other machines. Tech ' s Academic Side Tech is not all technical-vocational. It is an academic high school, also. Tech students get the plus value out of their education. Not only do they learn a technical or vocational know-how, but take a full course of academic subjects. Tech students go to college as well as go to work. Plus the regular high school courses, Tech offers some of the finest classes and extra-curricular activi- ties of any of the high schools. Eric Corbin explores the mysteries of science. Kathy Boyd runs an experience. Mr. A I Wood explains just how things work to Carol Reed. 88 One of the biggest libraries of the high schools in Des Moines if not the biggest is Tech ' s. Miss Smith, Tech ' s librarian, encourages use of this facility and many students do. Teachers take advantage of the large number of books, references, magazines, and other material in the library by taking their classes there and by assigning work for the students. Because of the nature of Tech, this library has many tech- nical and vocational reference books not found elsewhere. Then let this timid hand of mine Be guided, line for line. With that steady, certain trueness Of the Hand that planned This universe. There are materials I must choose. Then let this casual mind of mine Choose with the wisdom of the Mind That fixed the substances Of things like grass and trees And mountain peaks. There are decisions ! must make. Then let me make them with that sureness That divided land and sea, And day and night, the birds that fly And beasts that roam the field. There ' s a determination I must hat e.
