South of the Border Angel Patricio Lopez, Pachi to Tech stu- dents, is this year ' s foreign student. He hails from Quito, Ecuador. He says, Quito is built on the slopes of the surrounding mountains and in a small valley. In the center of the city is a very small mountain which is a city park. He also adds that Quito is approximately the same size as Des Moines. He is the next to the oldest of five children. He has two sisters, Maria 19, and Myriam 8, and tw f o brothers, Germain 15, and Julian 10 . While he is attending Tech, he has been living with the Ross T. Wilburs. His Ameri- can brother is Jon Wilbur, a Tech senior. Jon is in the Auto Diesel area. Pachi is in the same area. He is taking English, social studies, speech, and mechani- cal drawing, also. Pachi says, The schools in Ecuador are not co-educational. They put boys in one school; the girls in another. We have to take 14 or 15 subjects a year. Pachi ' s main hobby is playing soccer. He says his main ambition is to be a mechanical engineer and to go to college when he gets back to Ecuador. The American Field Service has a pro- gram saying that I can come back after my education is completed. When Pachi was asked what his first impression of Tech was, his reply was Won- derful! Tech is different from the schools in Ecuador. It ' s larger. We had only 600 students. Pachi said, The girls at Tech are so friendly and beautiful. The food, says Pachi, is much the same as we eat in Ecuador. But I can ' t under- stand why I have gained 18 pounds since I came to Des Moines. Pachi and his American brother, Jon Wilbur n
