ATHLETICS page 14 ORGANIZATIONS 36 CORE AREAS 64 FACULTY 96 SENIORS 108 SENIOR DIRECTORY 136 TECH ITSELF Tech is, of course, its students and faculty, its work and play. The next six pages show Tech ' s population at its usual daily routine of playing hard and ivorking easy. But, I always bowl like this. First, put left hand on head. 6 Next Friday we ' re having frog. me carry it. Reminds me, I forgot to register. Rod Sterling got his start here. Make it good, this is the last picture. 9 FLOOR PLAQUE GIFT FROM ' 64 SENIORS The ' 64 grads had quite a time, commented Mr. Betz, recalling the problems seniors had in collecting funds and organizing the preparations for the school plaque. Ben Shnurman, who graduated in ' 64, was the chairman of the commit- tee. Paul Deer, also a ' 64 grad, was co-chairman. The seniors raised the money for the plaque from donations by seniors, as well as the rest of the student body, sales of decals, and the annual school movie. They had several assemblies in which seniors donated money from their own pockets. The cost of the plaque was $437, while installation was $60. The special light above the plaque cost $20 and the dedication plaque in the center of the floor plaque was $25. The total amount of the floor plaque was $567. The plaque itself is made of pure bronze and weighs approximately 150 pounds. 10 South of the Border Angel Patricio Lopez, Pachi to Tech stu- dents, is this year ' s foreign student. He hails from Quito, Ecuador. He says, Quito is built on the slopes of the surrounding mountains and in a small valley. In the center of the city is a very small mountain which is a city park. He also adds that Quito is approximately the same size as Des Moines. He is the next to the oldest of five children. He has two sisters, Maria 19, and Myriam 8, and tw f o brothers, Germain 15, and Julian 10 . While he is attending Tech, he has been living with the Ross T. Wilburs. His Ameri- can brother is Jon Wilbur, a Tech senior. Jon is in the Auto Diesel area. Pachi is in the same area. He is taking English, social studies, speech, and mechani- cal drawing, also. Pachi says, The schools in Ecuador are not co-educational. They put boys in one school; the girls in another. We have to take 14 or 15 subjects a year. Pachi ' s main hobby is playing soccer. He says his main ambition is to be a mechanical engineer and to go to college when he gets back to Ecuador. The American Field Service has a pro- gram saying that I can come back after my education is completed. When Pachi was asked what his first impression of Tech was, his reply was Won- derful! Tech is different from the schools in Ecuador. It ' s larger. We had only 600 students. Pachi said, The girls at Tech are so friendly and beautiful. The food, says Pachi, is much the same as we eat in Ecuador. But I can ' t under- stand why I have gained 18 pounds since I came to Des Moines. Pachi and his American brother, Jon Wilbur n Queen Janie- kiiigl Bob: Homecoming 1964! Janie Buckingham (at left), Com- mercial Art senior and Bob Ferren (at right), Aviation senior, were elected by the student body to be Tech ' s 1964 Homecoming Queen and King. The royal pair were crowned by last year ' s King and Queen, Tom Callahan and Penee Pfantz at the annual Homecoming Assembly on October 3. They reigned at the Homecoming Dance on October 4 in the cafeteria and Student Center. Mr. Gary Olney, Des Moines teacher and a ' 56 graduate, was on hand during the assembly to give a short talk, representing the alumni. Senior runners-up were Trude Vander Velden and Gene Gering. Representing the junior class were Marilyn Collins and Jim Carnahan. Sophomores were Donna Razor and Skip Simpson. As always, our athletes have been leaders in sportsmanship, citizenship and interschool relations as well as in their aca- demic studies. Through their hard work and determination they have earned city and state acclaim, and have brought honor to themselves and to their school. The football field, the basketball court or the baseball diamond, however, are not the only places where there is room for honor. And, this year, our spectators have also commanded respect and admiration from all for the fine sportsman- ship displayed by them before and after our athletic contests. The more than 100 letters awarded to our athletes for their participation in football, wrest- ling, golf, tennis, basketball, baseball, cross coun- try, swimming, cheerleading, and track are but a small measure of the thanks we owe them for the memories of the exciting times and chances for companionship that they have afforded us during the year. Many of them have been established within just a few years but have already succeeded a great deal in improving Tech. The students of Tech do not stop at aca- demic activities but belong to many organi- zations which also require several hours of work a week. These organizations are helpful in many ways. Students collected $386 for the Student Council. Key Club collected 200 toys to give to the orphanages for Christmas. Lettermen ' s Club watches the streets for jay- walkers so the traffic can move smoother. The students that are a part of these organizations get a rewarding experience and enjoyment out of the work they do. These organizations represent the high caliber of students attending Tech this year and every year. The Pep Club this year has done a great job in upholding the spirit for Tech, with the help of Mrs. Knutson, pep club officers and all loyal pep club members. Yellow blouses, navy blue skirts were a great hit for the pep club uniforms. Pep club emblems also added to the uniform. Although we didn ' t win all of our games, we played good ones, enough to keep the spirit of pep club roaring throughout the games. We just hope this spirit continues to grow throughout the peart with all new classes entering Tech. Although they never apprehend a bank robber or shoot-it-out with a gangster, they do have duties to perform. Among their duties is to see that all students have a pass to be in the halls or to leave the building during class time. Violators of the school rules can be given court passes by the monitors. Not just anyone can become a monitor. A student must have good grades, be dependable, have a study hall, and be approved by the boys ' or girls ' advisor and the sponsor, Mr. Boyce. Behind them they leave old tests, undone assignments, dances, proms, homecomings, and many football and basketball games. The most important thing that they leave behind is the reputation of Tech, built up through the years. The Seniors of Tech High have tried their best to keep it high and are confident the Junior Class can uphold the high standing. Consider the kind of business career you want and judge the qualities of the com- pany which is a part of that business. Life Insurance is a good business and the Equitable Life of Iowa is a good company — offering so many opportunities for the career man or woman. Look into the Equitable, and you ' ll find all of the so-called fringe benefits offered by business gener- ally, plus some that only Equitable has for you. Most importantly, there are so many phases of life insurance work that your opportunities for advancement and permanency are limited only by your own ability. In the Personnel Office, 1105 Equit- able Building, you ' ll find Miss Pat Bush — discuss with her all the opportunities that exist for you at the Equitable — you may choose your career right now. Some come from big cities, others from small towns. Some are from the East Coast, others from Cali- fornia. Some are from as near as Des Moines, others from as far away as Hong Kong. Some are rich, others of relatively mod- est means. Some want to become teachers, others lawyers, still others businessmen. Some are Republicans, others are Demo- crats. Drake students differ in many respects, but they share a common bond: the desire for an education. They are preparing themselves for careers while gain- ing insight into the problems con- fronting today ' s world. We would be pleased to answer your ques- tions about our study programs.
