J - . .r, x K , ' ' ' . . . - n ' u A U -Y , , ,- v . - y . si The fourth teacher was added to the high school corps in ISSZ when W W Ainsworth came as the first teacher of book keeping the school had known Physical culture was first introduced in l885 when Miss Kunkle began her work raising the number in the corps to five But all this time the enrollment continued about the same and no efforts seemed to avail to raise it above l D0 During the principalship of Mr R D ones who succeeded Mr Cary in ISS3 the first regular high school paper the Hrgfi School Herald was published Alice Qlark being editor in chief and Falk Younker business manager The first of a long series of debating societies was organized in 1883 f erhaps a forerunner of the athletic trips of a latter day may have been the trip made during this administration by a class of boys and girls to the town of Panora of athletic fame where they entertained the admiring citizens by such mild forms of athletics as wand drills and fancv marching exhibitions in an overheated diminutive hall called an opera house Mr ones was succeeded in l886 bv Mrs L T Morrow during whose term the board of directors began a more liberal policy tow ard the school which resulted ln the beginning of what has been constant growth ever since The beginnings of a commercial course were made in H386 another teacher was employed science was made more of a feature and laboratory methods were introduced and on the nineteenth day of April ISS9 the school dedicated its that Des Moines now had a high school building that would serie and be sufficient for the needs of all future time But new accommodations and new advantages attracted pupils and the growth of the school has been very rapid At this time there were 2 l 0 pupils in l892 the 300 mark was passed and in l896 the enrollment was 476 ln l889 Mrs Morrow was succeeded by Miss Celia Ford w ho was principal for two years Mr H T Kincaid sersed as principal from I89I to l893 followed bv Mr William Wilcox from l893 to 1896 Manual training and domestic science departments were opened in September l89O and much advancement was made in all lines of work during this time Perhaps the first appearance of athletic activity of definite form was in the organization of a football team in l892 and since that time this has been a factor of high school life of eser Increasing importance The golden age of the high school came not at the beginning but in its most recent history The administration of Principal W O Riddell beginning in 1896 and closing but a few months ago was an era marked by great advancement in equipment by development of the courses of study bv increased influence and reputation of the school and by the growth of a school spirit and loyalty which means much more than is generally understood But extended treatment of this penod is perhaps unnecessary at this time The most notable event was the addition of the new building which was occupied for the first time in Qctober 1903 Mr W A Crusinberry who entered upon the duties of the principalship in January l905 had already been connected with the school for so long a time and had so favorably impressed teachers and pupils that his commg from North High was but the return of an old fnend rather than the beginning of a new rule ALBERT W MERRILL seventeen ANNUAL W D M , 'K I , . . 'C Q I ,' ,g. .' ,.',-.'1,' .'.' . , ,V ,II ANNUAL W D M A LITTLE MIX AT THE DRAKE STADIUM FOOT BALL HE foot ball season of l904 came ln accompamed by a small bacillus which swaggered was left made us yell typhord four times and then left us feelmg a llttle crestfallen and blue but stlll rn the arena We take our hats off to the measly llttle germ He was too much for us but he was kmd to us nevertheless for he taught us our lesson and It was a lesson of great consequence to Old West Hrgh We now know not only that we can not take a dnnk out of any old dutch we come to unless we fllter It through a sleve and call lt crty water but that the time to get acquainted wnth ourselves and create a thlng known dlstmctlvely as the West Hugh splrlt IS the time of dlsaster such as the past season of I904 furnished us May we extol our vrrtue so far as to say we met thrs emergency ln a way un expected even to ourselves and caused the awakemng of that which shall long be known as the 'Fighting Spmt' of Old West Hugh The story of the season of l904 without recountmg the senes of mishaps which befell the team because of typhoid fever clalmmg as nts vlctlms Buell McCash left guard Lewis Strawthers rrght half back Kenneth Macdonald guard and quarter back and Locke Macomber tackle and full back may be bnefly told Wrth the openlng of the school term the team was found without a coach Practrce was begun at once however under the dlrectlon of Captam Wells and Terrell 'Ol an old farthful of West Hrgh The work of the team had passed through the stages of prellmmary practlce before Mr john Middleton an old txme foot ball player from Slmpson College was secured as coach Mr Mrddleton took Immediate charge of the team and rounded It rnto shape as best he could m so short a tame to meet the strong team from Capital Park October lst seventy er 1 9 0 5 -A V . . . I A A , ' ln quietly, took a good firm grip of us, shook us good and hard untll only a remnant . . . , . - A g h t The defeat by Caputal Park of 5 to 0 though not altogether unexpected was dushearten ung to the team and put an end at the very begunnung of the season to any hopes of champuon shup The coaches got busy durung the next week s practuce and by the tume of the Panora game put a team unto the held whuch succeeded un defeatung the Farmer Lads of Guthrue County Hugh School I2 to 0 un two short halves At the close of the Panora game Mr Muddleton who had but gotten started on hus dutues as coach took leave ot the team as he wushed to accept an otter from Utah whuch would permut of hus carryung on hus enguneerung work Mr Chase a member ofthe l899 l90l 1902 Grunnell football teams who as physucal durector had up to thus tume had charge of condutuonung the team was then guven complete coachung charge of them Thus change of coaches durung the season naturally necessutated a slught change un the system of play whuch always hard on a team The week followung the Panora game un the 41 to 0 game wuth Oskaloosa the team gave encouragement to uts supporters as ut dusplayed at tumes some of the best team work whuch ut put forth durmg the season The game wuth Luncoln resulted as was to be expected wuth Macdonald Hyland Strawthers and lVlcQash all out of the game un favor of Luncoln I6 to 6 West Hugh s fumblung and erratuc playung was all caused by the unabuluty of the coach to fund a man among euther the hrst or the second team who could full the quarter posutuon accept ably The playung of the team un the last twenty fuve munutes when they scored a touch down and were two other tumes wuthun strukung dustance of Luncoln s goal gave the furst unducatuon of the fughtung spurut the team showed durmg the remaunder of the season The only case of over confidence the team showed durmg the season resulted very dusastrously and ut was defeated at Marshalltown by unferuor playung wuth a 5 to 0 score A week later however they braced up under the most duscouragung condutuons for Locke Nlacomber was hopelessly out of the game and four of the remnant of the team had been out of the game dunng the week prevuous suckness un the form of a slught attack of malarua fever beung the cause They defeated North Hugh I6 to 0 The team whuch represented the school un the North Hugh game remauned untact for one whole week To thus fact un large measure may the splendud showung made agaunst the State Champuon be accounted for The annual East West Hugh game came thus year on November l8th To descrube un detaul thus magnufucent game would be the only real way to guve an adequate udea of that contest Seldom do lookers on have such a chance to see hugh grade foot ball played Seldom do supporters of two teams fund teams so worthy of the splendud cheenng and loyalty whuch was shown on that occasuon Seldom us ut the pruvulege of two elevens to say the vuctory us theurs To East Hugh us all credut guven for the consustent manner un whuch they took advantage of theur one opportunuty to score and for the score of sux whuch they secured To West Hugh us all credut guven for the stubbom fught they put up wuth a team hardly expected to hold theur opponents to a better score than 30 to 0 Ot both teams ut can be saud that they fought theur best fught that they played a hard and clean manly game that they put up an exceed ungly hugh class artucle of foot ball lt was one of the hardest fought best supported and cleanest games of foot ball ever played between these two schools It was a game whuch vwull long be remembered by those who saw ut played and by those who took part uru ut s venty nune I 9 0 5 ANNUAL W D M 1 1 ' . - 1 - - ' 1 1 .
