We, the Senior Class of 1952, publish the Derrian, a presentation of drama in Derry Borough High School, as the remembrance of those leaving and as a record for those to come. The success of our yearbook is due largely to the splendid co- operation of the faculty and of the student body. The staff wishes to thank Miss Custer and Miss Robinson, the advisers, for their aid and interest. A most important factor in our school administration is the Board of Education. It is composed of five townsmen in whose hands many of the major problems of the school rest. This group of men, cooperating with the supervising principal, is extremely important for the function of our school. Always planning new methods of improving our school, this Board of Directors works diligently preparing the budget, purchasing the school sup- plies, regulating tuitions and electing teachers. These are only a few of the duties that confront them. . An up-to-date organization, our Board has loyally and honestly devoted its time to the cause of advancing the school that is theirs and ours. Four years ago we entered the threshold of our great Alma Mater as young greenies ready to start a new life. We chose our class officers who were very capable. We have sweet memories of our class party and record dances. Much athletic ability proved suc- cessful and we were well represented. We climbed up another notch to the gay, young sophomores. This year was not as exciting but we participated in both football and basket ball. At last! Upperclassmen! We finally made our big step. This year was our biggest with our play. Next were our class rings shining so bright and last but most important, the Junior Prom. This prom was a great success. Finally we hit the top notch as grand, old seniors. Could it really be true that we're seniors? Yes, we are seniors but sorry to say that we are leaving our grand D.B.H.S. We had a lot of fun putting on our Christmas program, getting our portraits, name cards, and of course, the prom. Personalities were selected finding the class well represented. As everything must come to an end we marched up on the stage to receive our di- plomas at Commencement. We hope these four years have prepared us for our future life as we bid farewell to our Great Alma Mater. To start our Junior year off on the right foot, we decided to elect our student coun- cil members at the end of our Sophomore year. Those chosen were: Shirley Leone, Mar- jorie Vitale, and Glenn Waite. The first thing we did when we came back as Juniors was to elect our class officers for the year. They were: president, Stanley Burikg vice- president, David Robinson, secretary, Sam Mastrorocco, and treasurer, Ruby King. Our librarians this year were Alice Bollinger and Kathleen Fulcomer. They really did a good job. Also new this year were our class rings. At last we received the symbol of our upper- classmanship. We found out this year that we have several musical members in our little group. Ruby King, Dwight Campbell, and James Mowry were chosen from our room to repre- sent Derry at County Chorus held at Derry Township. Also from our room is the pianist for our Girls' Chorus - Marjorie Vitale. Along with all our work we participated in the Journalism Club, Dramatic Club, Girls' and Boys' Chorus, G.A.A., trips, parties, sports, and lots of other activities. By other activities we mean the Class Play, which was a huge success. Everyone in our class had some connection with the play, which was entiled, One Too Many. Another activity was the big event of the year. Of course, it was the Prom. The theme was, Oriental Dream and the orchestra was Jimmy Brunelli. We worked hard to raise money for the prom by selling Christmas cards. After all is said and done, we had some great sports stars come out of our little group of thirty-two. There was Gib Gray, basket ball and footballg Stan Burik, basket ball and' footballg David Robinson, good in both fields, and Glenn Waite, outstanding in foot- ball. All of these are our greater stars of next year. We wish them lots of luck. I know we are all eager for next year to come when we will be on our last round-up. SOPLOMOPQ5 Lf- sv .3 First Row: P. ' As freshmen in this new and exciting place called Iligh School, which we all looked up to when we were in the lower grades. We knew that it was everything we thought of. As freshies we took part in all activities that our Alma Mater could offer. Now when the summer rolled past we found ourselves proudly sitting in the Sopho- more Class. The first thing that we did was to elect officers, our president was Anna garrong vice-president, Bill Dillong secretary, Jorge Rhodes and treasurer, Phyllis Mc- lune. As for our activities in the Sophomore class, we had a large number out for both sports of football and basket ball and some were honored by getting into the Lettermen's Club. As for the dances, parties, football and basket ball games and other activities, I think the Sophomore Class has proven that they can help make their activities a great success. T fed Inen L.-1... Under the direction of Miss Carter and Miss Robinson the class elected their officers for the coming year. Filling the position of president was Richard Hendersong vice- president, Donna Kissingerg secretary, Richard Sweeney: treasurer, Lillian Pattig and historian, Robert Bucci. Our Student Council representatives were Joseph Greubel and John Klym. Our first project was electing a freshman cheerleader. From many candidates, Linda Walkinshaw was chosen. We Freshies took part in most ofthe school clubs that were new to us. We were well represented in the Girls' and Boys' Chorus and the majority joined the Civics Club. This year as in other years, it was the work of the Senior class to publish the yearbook. Know- ing this would be a tough job the class went ahead. Slowly but surely the Derrian began to take form. Pictures were taken, ads were collected and write-ups were handed out. It really made you dizzy just to think of the magnanimous task ahead. But the staff faithfully kept its nose to the grind- stone. And what of our faculty advisers, Miss Custer and Miss Robinson? Without their tremendous as- sistance, this book would never have been pub- lished. They faithfully kept at the job and spent much of their time and effort willingly putting it together. But this is your book. As you look through it, you will no doubt be reminded of many mem- ories. Some happy, some not so happy-many you will share, many you will not share, but all near and dear to your heart. We hope you will be as proud of this book as we are. Along with Dick Platt, our able editor, and many typists, these two nursed the production lines along so that we received a Rambler at regular intervals. In days when the Rambler came out, everyone clamored back to their home room, after the final bell, to read such inter- esting items as - The Inquiring Reporter, the latest school news, reports on basket ball or football games, thought en- couraging editorials, or even the latest love affairs. The Rambler Staff, super- vised by Miss Custer and Miss Robinson, did a commendable job in issuing the school paper as part of the curriculum of the Journalism Club. The members of the club col- lected all the available news and wrote it up in an interesting way. The Journalism Club chose the following staff to publish the Rambler. Dick Platt had the important' position of Editor-in-Chief, David Robinson was chosen as his assist- ant. Arlene Clark was Social Editorg Phyllis Betts, Assistant Social Editor. The job of gathering the sports news went to Sports Editors, Donald Ryan and Stanley Akins. Their Assistants were Stanly Burik and Gilbert Gray. During the school term we enjoyed two parties, with the committees doing a wonder- ful job at both. We spent the evenings dancing, playing games, and, of course, eating. Also during the year we held contests, one on Christmas Poems and Essays, and the other, Posters of Citizenship. The winners were Ralph Luster and William While. We also enjoyed wonderful and interesting trips to the Westinghouse and to a Council Meeting. The members will never forget the things they learned and the fun they have had in this organization. With a Senior dominated squad and the return of eight lettermen, the Derry Rams, coached by Mr. Bucci, compiled an honorable record of seven victories, one tie, and a single defeat. Derry's opener was a toughie but the Rams defeated Penn Twp. by the margin of 12-7. Tom Dillon and Don Ryan chalked up the victor's score by each hitting paydirt for a touchdown. The following game found the Rams up against Bell Twp., one of the finest Class B teams in the W.P.I.A.L. Derry absorbed its worst and only defeat by a 31-0 count and thus were eliminated from the W.P.I.A.L. race. Traveling to Homer City the Rams once again found the going rough. Coming back in the second half to score their only marker by fullback Ryan, the Rams had to be satis- fied with a 6-6 deadlock. Playing host to Armaugh the Rams came out on top while holding the visitors scoreless 25-0. Ryan scored all the winning points. Again playing at home the Rams eked out a 13-12 victory over a strong Elders Ridge eleven. Again Don Ryan did the scoring for Derry by chalking up two touch- downs and the winning extra point. Derry kept on the winning trail by downing Trafford and West Newton by a 13-7 score in each game. The lose fearing Rams journeyed to Ligonier where they downed their arch- rivals in a rough batle 16-13 to end the gridiron season of 1951. This was also the final game for the following seniors: Louis Bozelli, Richard Platt, Charles Nicholson, Ernest Serena, Bernard and Kenneth Hensler, Thomas Dillon, Donald Ryan, Richard Sindorf, Teddy Bucci, and Stanley Akins. . rx t ua .
