But with the passing of events-foot ball games, dances, exhibits, and banquets- our verdant freshmen are now ready to begin their sophomore year with interest and enthu- siasm. This year the freshmen class was led by Joy Mimna, Kathy Joe, and John Tepper. Diane Johns and Darlene Owens will join our rank of maiorettes next year. Outstanding in freshmen basketball was Stanley Falenski. Also on the basketball court were Tom Otto, Terry Burd, Butch Cantor, and Bill Small. STUDE T COUNCIL Uur Leaders Are Good Citizens The student council, our representative body, is capably advised by Mr. Struble. Their election results were: President, Tom Fulcomer, Vice- President, Mick Watson, Secretary, Nancy Mir- eles, Treasurer, Connie Tripoli, and Assistant- Treasurer, Karen McHenry. Among their many duties, they represent us by debating problems which arise from students' inquiries. The Hi-Fi provided the music for their noon-time dances. The refreshment stand also added to their funds. Tropical Paradise, the semi-formal, was spon- sored by this active group. It proved to be a fi- nancial as well as social success. In April a large delegation of student council members attended the Spring Regional Conven- tion held in Connellsville. Our foreign exchange student, Paula Levrio, also attended this meeting as she was made an honorary member of the council. The annual Spring Clean-Up Campaign was sponsored by this organization. The organ fund for the new building is gradually approach- ing its goal. Proceeds from the magazine cam- paign went toward the purchase of new flags for the school. An able governing body, our Student Coun- cil has made many worthwhile contributions to the school. Group harmony through group effort US C CLUB With enthusiastic response, our young musicians unite to form the largest organiza- tion in our school-the Music Club. Perform- ing purely for enjoyment, our songsters and instrumentalists achieve some of the very fin- est programs in the district. The vocal music department's highlight of the year was the presentation of the operetta, Harmony Hall. Carol Wigle, Marcus Rid- dell, Richard Auman, and Ralph Sagan as- sumed leading roles in carrying this event to the heights of genuine success. Also scoring a triumph was the annual Christmas program, featuring the high school mixed chorus. Derry was found to be well represented at both the Westmoreland County and the ln- diana County choruses. BAN Whether it be marching pompously to the strains of a Sousa march or inter- preting solemnly the airs of a Beethoven symphony, the band represents an or- ganization of which we are extremely proud. Under the direction of Mr. Calvo, our band has been led to glory on num- erous occasions. Taking part in parades, half-time shows, assemblies, class plays, operettas, and concerts, our talented musicians are constantly active. Allowed to release their school work for several days to par- ticipate in the Westmoreland County Band at St. Vincent College were: Jane Smay, Larry Zimmerman, Muriel Markle, Roy Syster, Edna Grace Piper, Carol Reed, Noreen Saxman, and Judy Mikesell. Western District Band, held at Turtle Creek High School, found Derry repre- sented by Jane Smay and Muriel Markle. The experienced baton of Mr. Calvo directs bandsmen at an elgh h period session. 84 itll! Y1l'll'.' 9 ,gl Q if. .1 4 1 , H ,A lo! DRAMATICS Talented students and tireless efforts com- bined to achieve another successful year in the field of dramatics. Under the capable guid- ance of Miss Kasperik and student director, Diane Bridge, the Senior Class presented a de- lightful comedy, Don't Take My Penny. Carol Wigle successfully portrayed Penny, a young lass aspiring to become an actress. Ralph Sagan, assuming the role of Penny's ivy-league admirer, soon discouraged her am- bition. Marcus Riddell, Ron Giannini, Eileen Trenney, Carol Duda, Regina Stefanik, Leonard McChesney, Nancy Keim, Muriel Markle, Charles Nevins, Gerry Syster, Dale Light, Car- men Torockio, Susan Alberti, Jane Keough, and Elaine Shoup contributed fine talent to- ward the pIay's excellence. armen Torockio and Carol Duda wait anxiously for maid, In an amusing scene from 'Don't Take My Penny we find Ralph Muriel Markle, to relate the message. Under the able direction of Miss Georgia Stathis and Mrs. Ruby Markle, the ettorts of the Forensic Club and the Music Department were combined once more to present a commend- able Christmas program. A processional by the mixed chorus opened the annual event. A particularly efifective phase ofthe program in- cluded the reading by Jo Ann Gilbert of The Little Drummer Boy, followed by the musical selection, Carol of the Drum. The Junior Class displayed remarkable tal- ent in the performance of the play, Dark Mountain. An exceptionally fine and capa- ble cast presented this three act mystery- comedy. IN X 1 Nw Nlwg ,Q A OPERETTA Tuneful gaiety filled the halls of Derry, as the Music Department presented the operetta, Harmony Hall. Under the able direction of Mrs. Markle, the annual musical fete once again provided excellent opportunity for the display of fine talent by our musicians and dramatists. Richard Auman portrayed General Work, whose college of Harmony Hall was attended solely by adept rnusicians. His adopted daugh- ter, the prima donna Rosalie, Carol Wigle, was betrothed to the world's greatest tenor Brownini, portrayed by Mark Riddell. As Ros- alie pronounced her disdain forthe singing of Brownini, the wedding was oft! Ralph Sagan as Doolittle Work, son ofthe General, stepped in to win the hand and heart of Rosalie. Other excellent performances were ren! dered by Jerry Syster, Tom Latimer, Kay Kep- ple, Jane Keough, Eileen Trenney, Richard Markle, June McCurdy, Noreen Saxman, Mary Ann Papson, Richard Springer, Leonard McChesney, Dale Light, and John Willforth. Student director ofthe event was Nancy Burd. Backed by a competent chorus and de- lightful dancers, the operetta was once more a successful highlight of the year's extracurricu- lar achievements. TRAC With the break in the weather, the cinder men, clad in gray sweat shirts, began getting in shape for the upcoming meets. With just a few lettermen returning, head coach Mr. Bar- an and assistant Mr. Conti began shaping the boys into a fine track squad. Just a few stand- outs made up the nucleus of this year's team. A familiar sight to many of us is the line of speedsters darting over the cinders. The Tro- ions would soon appear in many dual and tri- angular meets. Carrying the load in the field events are Jim Bell, Dave Mulligan doing the pole vaulting, Joe Arch, and Ed Krinock in the discus and shot put. The running events will feature Denny Molchan in the dashes and the broad lump. Joe Bellissimo and Jim Flickinger will do the long distance running for Derry. Most of all the team will be waiting for the Westmoreland County meet, the W.P.I.A.L. ancl, most important, the State Meet. With the construction of the new school, the thinclads were faced without a track but the desire of these boys and many underclassmen carried the Trojan colors and brought many victories for Derry.
