Club A , composed of the junior and senior members, was wisely governed by President, Alice Gelston, Vice president, Caryl Geary, Sec- retary, Louise Opatka, and Treasurer, Tom Bar- berich. The second group called Club B in- cluded the sophomore and freshman members. They chose for their officers President, Deanna Plato, Vice president, Jane Schilling, Secretary, Brenda Kerr, and Treasurer, Paula Naylon. The A group, headed by Mr. Pilato, and the B group, under Mr. Baron, held separate meetings but otherwise acted as a single club. In the fall the members journeyed to Pitts- burgh where they viewed a sky show and an exhibit of prcjects of historical value. Spring found the historians off again on another jour- ney to local points of historical interest. Of course, the big event of the year fcr His- tory Club members is their long trip which was taken over a weekend at the climax of the school year. A lot of time and planning by the com- mittee members, officers, and advisors goes into the preparation of these tours, but the results are certainly worthwhile. The club engages in many activities in the school calendar by spon- soring dances and parties and also indulges in worthwhile projects to better our school. This past year the History Club again began the print- ing of ci school newspaper after a lapse of a year. Called the Der Tow, the publication proved to be popular with our students in addi- tion to giving the staff valuable experience. The History Club members are constantly striving to keep their groups among the leaders in extra curricular activities at Derry Area Joint A High School. 14 pro :table way to A end lewure lwum HISTORY CLUB Row 'I-R. Banquets are the cIub's favorite pastime, and the members fully enjoy these outings. Initiation time brings exciting events. The new members must come to school attired in costumes cf ancient Rome. This often proves to be a trying task. Some of the Latin projects that adorn our library tables every year are very unique. All cf these activi- ties attribute to the delight of these Julius Caesar fans. Due to their enjoyable activities, the Latin Club is tops. Monogram Club Purchasing jackets for the senior members of the athletic group is the main objective of this club. Those who have merited two letters in football, basketball, or track qualify for mem- bership. Senior cheerleaders are included and are entitled to a jacket also. Funds are raised by holding dances, skating parties, and the an- nual varsity-faculty basketball game. Also,'a small profit is realized from the sale of photo- graphs taken of couples attending the Winter and Spring formals. National Honor Society Obtaining membership to the National Hon- or Society is a goal for which every ambitious high school student, seeking scholastic achieve- ment and recognition, strives. Qualifications considered for membership includes outstanding traits of leadership, scholarship, service, and character. This year, under the capable guid- ance of Mrs. Kist, the society has appointed Robert Stump as president, Lawrence Burd as vice president, Joyce Bundy as secretary, and Shirley Dascenzo as treasurer. An annual pro- ject of the society arises near Easter vacation when they engage in selling candy. New mem- bers are initiated during their annual solemn ceremony which takes place in the spring. The students chose as their officers, John Gelsdorf as president, Richard Falenski as vice-president, and Gwen Howard as secretary- treasurer. Though a relatively new club, they have become very active in the past year. Dur- ing several monthly meetings guest lecturers spoke on mathematics in industry. The club is well known for its interesting and varied pro- grams. They have high hopes for more activities in the future. Music Club The Music Club, under the guidance of Mrs. Markle and Mr. Calvo, provides membership to all students active in any musical organization. This year James Latimer was elected as Presi- dent, Joan Yanossy as Vice-President, and Bar- bara Frenchik as Secretary-Treasurer. This ac- tive club has sponsored the annual operetta, the Christmas program, the Spring Band and Choral Concerts, and the memorable tour of New York City in the spring. The main feature of the tour was viewing of the fabulous production, Okla- homo. The club attended the annual Swing Out at Indiana State Teachers College. Ushers Club We have a seat in the third row center, sir. lf you have attended any of our plays, operettas, concerts, or other assemblies, you prob- ably have recognized the accommodation girl -dressed in a blue jumper, a crisp white blouse, and a tiny hat-as one of our Ushers Club mem- bers. Learning to do, doing to learn, learning to live, living to serve is the motto of the Future Farmers of America. The F. F. A. is a national organization for farm boys studying Vocational Agriculture in high school. Each year the F. F. A. holds o father and son banquet. Along with many other activities, they have F. F. A. iudging contests where the members show their ability in iudging livestock, crops, and soil. In December of 1955, the F. F. A. performed a thirty minute demonstration on television station WQED on the breeding, feeding, and management of dairy cattle. Each month a meeting is held and run according to parliamentary procedure. Tri-Hi-Y This worthy organization, under the able supervision of Miss Kasperik, consists of 73 mem- bers-sophomore, iunior, and senior girls-who have more than shown their usefulness to their school, church, and home. Their major proiect was the purchasing of soap dispensers which have been desired facilities of the past. Besides actively sponsoring dances, Christmas found these girls of Christian-like character busy mak- ing scrap books and favors which would be filled with candy for district hospitals. They proudly claim Eileen Marcinik as president, Gloria Somple as vice-president, Donna Williams as secretary, and Joyce Levrio as treasurer. This charitable club makes contributions to many needy organi- zations. They can certainly be assured that they have upheld to the best of their ability their es- teemed motto, which is, to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and commun- ity high standards of Christian Character. Among the seniors our inimitable Willy Pukmel continued winning first places in humor, Alice Gelston, Gwen Howard, and Jerry Bechak emoted dramatically-and successfully, and Tony Sobota captained the debaters. Under the direction of Miss Smith, club sponsor and speech coach, and Miss Stathis, debate coach, stars in speaking shone in all four classes. It was a heavenly season! This popular activity has grown in num- ber each year. The reason for this is due to the successful programs performed by the students of vocal music. Music class makes it possible for those participating to have membership in the Music Club. Among the events of the year was the operetta, Rio Rico, in which Kathi Bise, Roger McChesney, Janet Smith, Barbara Kindl, Willie Pukmel, Gwen Howard, Gloria Somple, Jerry Bechak, Bob Mumau, James Latimer, Harry Switzer, Charles Demangone, John Yockey, Terry Deglau, Dick Gelsdorf, Silvano Perla and William Cowan were featured. To celebrate the Christ- mas season, this class inspired the student body with songs, dancing, and a candlelight proces- sion. On Wednesday mornings the Chapel Choir provides devotions via the P. A. Bob Vella as Dean Gillingham and Margie Alfelda as Sue Abbott can also be commended for their fine portrayals. The long-to-be-remembered presentation was the result of Miss Stathis' untiring efforts and superb coaching. The Christmas spirit was manifested in the program presented by Mrs. Markle, Miss Smith, and the music students. The program, entitled Christmas Party, was an exhibition of satirical skits illustrating Christmas. RIO RICO, chosen as operetta for 1956, entailed much singing, dancing, and laugh- ter by the school songsters, and starred Harry Switzer, Dolores Gipson, Jerry Be- chak, Roger McChesney, and Barb Kindl in the leading roles. The Eagles, members of Section TOA of the WPIAL, got better as they went along. Having an exceptionally small squad, Coach Lou Festa was amazed by the play of his team. The Eagles won their first 10 Section games, and went on to capture the Section title, winning ll and losing only l, that to Ramsay. In winning the title, the Festa five defeated Ramsay, and Hurst, Scottdale, Dunbar, Ligonier, and Rostraver each twice. This was the first Section title for the Golden Eagles in Class A competition.
