Much to everyoneis dismay, on Iuly 6, 1952, there occurred in the same Township a Hre which, without the efforts of the school board, the faculty, the citizens of Derry Township, and the students themselves, would have divided the students among the several nearby high schools. Fortunately, this did not happen, and although conditions are not normal, the pupils are together. WVhile the freshmen are at West Derry Grade School building, they are still a part of the high school and are brought over for the various assemblies, basketball games, and pep meetings. Because the chemistry laboratory was demolished in the fire, the students of chemistry and physics do their lab work at Derry Borough High School. The cleaning up of the refuse of the Fire, the buying of new books, and the reconstruction of the part of the building that was destroyed, fell upon the shoulders of the administration. For seven weeks they raced against time to have the dwelli ready for the opening of school in September. S if ,jffj WJ gb' iyjyfwl l ff' It has been said that out of every unfortunate ineidei , ome good must come. To be sure, the fire has helped the s ,nts of - Derrv Township to realize the importance of coo tion and sacrifice in maintaining a Hrst-class sf-hool. y - ,f' July l XJ ' ' If f 5 IILASSES wig 1 , ,L 'A gijm f25g+'iiv , W ' 3 5n S v ERE- wzf fb ,Nj-iv is-Q.-if-. 7 ,.s3i5'??EaQ2ggM5i,, L. fs., , 33561 , -YP , Lgiwm 1. , V ,. fx gl, Xglifllzvlft I . ,L ,.,. , N, www a 'H-...Q ,F mgqg, Y M rw 4 Nw ' X I B Y ,ggfeg Q, 5.5. -- . wfyfflunugn-Q-w+m N- 'S ' 5 s Q Q ' A if Y 'ig e x N -..,t, V M ..fA . tlx.l-'1-slu,Nliss Katspi-rilx, ADMI THE HUB OF A SUCCESS BOARD OF ICDUCATION Seated: .lU5t'17ll Ciuiluilli, f:i'Ul'gk' Suuttulx. Kist, Hr. Stump. H TR T UL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM Although dealing more with the grade schools than the high school, Mr. Hardy is still a familiar figure around here. Until the fire this year which destroyed part of the building, his oflice was located in the high school and students often encountered him While passing through the halls. He spoke annually at the pep meetings in the fall and presented the seniors to the school hoard at graduation in the spring. At the end of December, however, Mr. Hardy took a sabbatical leave of absence because of ill health and has been replaced by Mr. Kurtz. IO MR. HARDY SUPERVISINC PRINCIPAL D INISTR TIO THEY KEEP THE WHEELS PRINCIPAL Always a busy man. Mr. Kurtz suddenly found on the morning of July 6 that his job was doubled in responsibilities and work. He was faced with a school that was onlv partial- ly usable and a larger enrollment of students than before. It was largely due to his dili- gence and hard work that school was able to open on September 2 as planned. It was a difficult task and Mr. Kurtz spent many long hours on it. The beginning of school found him with his usually full schedule coupled with the problems of rebuilding the burned section of the school. Nevertheless. he still took time to help the students with their various prob- lems as they arose. In December he was chosen to replace Mr. Hardy as supervising principal and has continued to work for the betterment of the school. GUIDANCE DIRECTOR To aid the students in choosing their fu- ture careers, Mr. Stump, the former Guidance Director and now principal of Derry Town- ship, gives an aptitude test to all freshmen. In addition, he supervises I. tests that are ad- ministered to sophomores and seniors. Each student in the high school is interviewed by him individually at some time during their four years here. Elected to replace Mr. Kurtz. Mr. Stump took over his new post in Ianuarv. NVhile quite busy with his duties as actingiprincipal. he still finds time to help the pupils with any problem that might arise concerning their plans before and after graduation. RUNNING SIVIOOTHLY IN A BUSY SCHOOL SECRETARIES Due to the lack of a public-address system this year, Mr. Kurtis secretaries, Marie Sabo and Beverly Yacobush, have had their work doubled. All messages to the teachers must be mimeo- graphcd and delivered in addition to their regu- lar chores of taking dictation and typing letters for the office, and filing records and reports. Chosen at the end of their junior year be- cause of their outstanding Work in the commer- cial field, these girls have Worked very diligently i11 taking care of all the various office corres- pondence. Not only have they been of invalu- able aid to the otlice, but they have also earned a great amount of practical.experience for their future careers. ' D I I I NURSE Assuming the duties of nurse this year for the Township School District is Miss Virginia WVer- ner. This pert, little nurse is kept quite busy serving all the Township schools. For a brief period each day she can be found here at the high school, but the majority of her time is spent visiting the numerous schools of the district. Medical and dental examinations were given to all the students in grades one, three, five, seven, nine, and eleven. Check-ups of sick students at home, main- taining of medical supplies in the various build- ings, and general help Wherever needed all add up to very busy days for the school nurse. Zdwjtgzifo MANY ACCOMPLISHIVIENTS No longer the greenies of a year ago, the sophomores are forging ahead to become one of Towuship's most prominent classes. They have many outstanding qualities which were displayed throughout the year. They participated socially and athletically in every important event. In the music field, the sophomores were quite active. Michele Yacohush, Rosemarie Rich, Ioan Shultz, and Vaughn Piantine played leading roles in the operetta this year and many of the girls Went through graceful, viva- cious dancing routines that entertained the audience. Others contributed a large amount of talent in the choruses, hand, and orchestra. The hovs of the sophomore class volun- teered their services to the various athletic teams that represented Derry Township High School the past season. Outstanding among these were Regis Slcoloda and Iim Ankney. Both boys were noted for their Work on the gridiron, the haskethall court, and the track field. Colette Petrarca and Giovanna Boerio were high-steppingw majorettes while Joanne Saho, Nancy McKelvev, and Ioan Shultz were vigorous,, cheerleaders. This is the way to do it. Baran The Freshman class, though separated from the rest of the high school for almost the entire year, made their presence felt hy presenting the other students with uquantity and qualityf as the major part of their class participated in all the school ac- tivities. Entering into the music program, both vocal and instrumental, the freshmen gave the school some promising talent in the persons of Harry Switzer, Gwendolyn Howard, Sylvano Perla, Melvyn White, and many others. VVhen time for the oper- etta came around, this ability paid off as several freshmen acquired leads while oth- ers were cast in the singing and dancing choruses. As a class project, they held dances and sponsored a Freshmen Get Acquaintedn party which turned out to be a huge suc- cess. The freshmen were invited, of course. to all social functions held hy the upper- classmen, and there was rarely an event which was not patronized hv at least a few freshman students. With their most diffi- cult year behind them, the freshmen are looking forward with enthusiasm to a chal- lenging hut eventful year as sophomores. It's great to he a freshman. Membership in the F.F.A. entails partici- pating in the State Farm Show and other shows throughout the county and state. Mr Campbell, the advisor, has helped the boys make the club one of the most important or- ganizations at D.T.H.S. ln addition to their agricultural shows, the F.F.A. boys can always be counted on as ex- cellent stage crews for any performance that is given. This year, the members have also instituted the practice of selling Christmas trees. FORENSICS This group of drama-minded students. al- though small in number, is certainly large in ability and ambition. The club sends repre- sentatives to forensic tournaments and debates where they may perform as happy humor- ists, tear-drenched dramatists, authorities on world affairs, creators of philosophies, or de- bators of State Sales Taxes. This year the Forensic members travelled to Greensburg for a tournament and partici- pated in several debates with Blairsville and Greensburg high schools. Sl - Phillips, V. P.g Gclston. Scc. Under the com- bined supervision of Mrs. Markle and Mr. Calvo the department is kept active and grow- ing. Mrs. Markle works with the vocalists of the school. She loves her music and devotes much of her time preparing the groups for the annual operetta and spring concert. Through her, Derrv Township has rcallv be- come music minded. The enrollment in the various choruses is now past three hundred which shows that interest in vocal music is on the increase. Under Mr. Calvo, one of the leading musi- cians in western Pennsylvania, the marching and concert bands have become one of the finest in the district. lt has been said of Mr. Calvo that to know him is to love himv and his students have shown this in their willing- ness to work for him. Both he and Mrs. Mar- kle have had the honor of placing several of their students i11 All-County Chorus and Band. TI-IE FUN-LOVING GAL ATHLETES OF TOWNSHIP The Girls' Athletic Association provides an opportunity for girls with an interest in sports to participate in intramural activities outside of gym class. Such sports as basketball, vol- leyball, and softball are played. They also indulge in tumbling, square dancing, and calis- thenics. This year a basketball tournament com- posed of three teams was set up. The seniors made up one team, juniors another, while the sophomores comprised the third. Competi- tion was keen as the classes fought it out on the basketball court. All of these activities put together not only provide the girls with a Way to display their athletic ability, but also teaches them fair play, co-operation. and responsibility. At all of these contests, the members act as referees. This enables them to learn the rules governing the different games. This year, Miss Paskovitch became the new advisor of the association. Aiding her in, helping to solve problems and also managing the meetings were Louise I-Ialula, president, Diane NVhite, vice-president, and Ioanne Mas- simino. secretary-treasurer. 77 G. A. A.
