Industry plays an important part in the lives of every person for after graduation we must choose some occupation which will suit both our needs and per- sonalities. We realize that we must work for a living in the fu- ture, for this we need a good education to prepare us for a worthy career. lndustry also plays an impor- tant part in the education of our youth, because industry helps to support our school system and o F f e r s advanced education through college scholarship tests and opportunities for occupa- tional education. Industry, the keynote to suc- cess and the backbone of every nation surely deserves the praise which we confer upon it through the dedication of the school annual. Smith, J. Peace Senior Review The departing class this year, 1948, will leave behind it many memories of happy events at Derry Township. When this class first came to high school, they were unsure, but excited at the thought of being Freshmen. That first year was spent mainly in becoming adiusted to the high school routine. In a short time they were into the swing of things, and attended football and basketball games, and many other social functions. A Then, as sophomores, they welcomed in and, of course, teased the new Freshman class. They began thinking seriously about what they would do after high school, so that they would be well-prepared. Then, too, there was the excitement of ordering class rings and pins, they would soon be upperclassmen. They became upperclassmen, and it didn't seem any different than when they were Freshmen. Around the middle of the school year, the Junior class held their annual class play. The returns from the play were used to finance the Junior-Senior Prom. The prom that year was truly a memorable occasion for all who attended, and especially for the seniors. Also that year, 1946-1947, the juniors received their long-awaited class rings and pins. Finally, at the end of the term, the seniors graduated, and left the honor position in the high school to the new seniors. This was a very happy day for the iuniors. At last, the coveted position of senior was attained. The seniors really began to think seriously of their future, which was only a matter of months away. They ordered their name cards, and their senior annuals, for these would aid greatly in later years in the recollection of good times in the past. Then came the last few days of school, and with them, came lumps in the throats of the seniors. Shwan, Pres., D. Brown, V. Pres., C. Janoscrat, Sec.-Treas. Two years ago, we began as green little freshies . We were bewildered by the first few weeks' routine which at the time, seemed very mysterious. We became familiar with school activities which heretofore had been unknown to us. We were active in meetings and took care of difficult situations. Thus we concluded our first year at Derry Township. Last year we proceeded to the Sophomore class. We then assumed more of the responsi- bility in our high school affairs. We had by this time settled down, and took an active part in student government. We realized by this time that our school's progress was partially due to our cooperation, common sense, and good judg- ment. Now, we take another step forward into the present iunior class. We are looking forward to the time when we may enter into this wide, wide world and form a part of the government of tomorrow. We have, through our training here thus far, been partially fitted to meet the situations of tomorrow, whatever they may be. We are awaiting the completion of our high school training. We will then enter into a world aniol-A Seniors of Tomorrow 57' A I lg l N, ,-', fl . l P EXQ which is in need of many educated people. We hope that we will be capable of carrying on our part in this democracy in future years. In the meantime we are ever striving for the advance- ment of our student government. After the com- pletion of this year we will have but one more step to take here at good old D. T. H. S. We are now coming closer and closer to the day when we will complete this memorable iunior year of 1948. 4 , SQ 'Q 1- '9 g 'wx yi? 4 2 W 94 Q -mg Q -'ss if it aw W Q tr ' ggi' ' .1 1, i ' fi... s 1 ,fm ii xi .- Q' L4 ,Hg uw' i vi, 1 qw ,Qu 'v Suv fi- if 'if hx an Af .Q Wm 'HQ .1 'Y Nun wi-m ir WM f Q 5 '39 fi 1 X xx X vw E X 5 ,L K L A A m V . . Gray Advisor Mr. Struble Our Student Council is iust about the most active organiza- tion in the school. They sponsor programs for our entertain- ment, put on dances for our enjoyment, and make the laws that keep our student body under control. To this organization goes the credit for financing a great deal of the progressive equipment we now have, such as the Public Address System. Our halls are more orderly, our lockers more carefully guarded, our actions more disciplined because of the vigilance and cooperation of the Student Council. Mr. Struble as the advisor has done an excellent iob in guiding the activities of this group. lt has not been an easy task, for the Student Council always gets its share of criti- cism along with the orchids, but they have truly done nobly in all they have undertaken and have made our school a happier, more progressive and more orderly school, for having done their share in worthy accomplishment. 46 Elue and gold Mrs. Zamperini and her Blue and Gold staff have done a most remarkable job with the yearbook. There were many ob- stacles in the way, but they took the hurdles in their stride, and when it seemed that a yearbook was almost a financial impos- sibility, this group took over and produced what we may pro- nounce perfection. It is through the untiring efforts of the staff and their advisor that we have a yearbook in 1948. The odds were definitely against them, but when a group of determined students and an advisor that wants to see the students get what they want, put their heads together, a yearbook is going to come out of the huddle. We're proud of our yearbook. We think it's just about tops and can hold its own with any other school publi- cation in the county, and when you read it, we think you'll agree. The paper has been an open, well-written record of the inter- ests, news, sports, romances, and activities of our student body. There were few gripes and many compliments when the Der-Tows were dis- tributed in home rooms. Each club activity was promptly put in print when it occurred, and very little escaped the eye and ear of the wary re- porters on Miss Brindles' staff. With limited facilities and budgeted time, we think this group deserves a real hand. They have printed all the news that was news and let nothing worthy of notice escape their eagle eyes. This year the club sponsored a series of movies on good manners among teen-agers that proved highly popular among the students and which were truly beneficial to them socially. The aim of the French Club is to develop and increase interest in French life, language and customs. In acquiring these aims, the pupil may gain by thoughtful comparison, a better understanding of his own country. FORENSICS Our forensic league is composed of a group of up-and-coming speakers. This school activity offers to its members the experience of speaking to others with charm, poise, and sureness. lt tries to teach its members the value of self-ex- pression and confidence. The group singing has been a real accomplishment. At Christmas time our songsters always show us how carols should be sung. Their beautifully blended voices bring out all the hidden beauty which we so often fail to hear when we have assembly singing. It is one thing to sing with the student body, but it is an entirely different thing to sit with the student body and listen to a carefully trained chorus sing, then true shades of melody swell and soften into the lovely harmony that makes group singing what it is. Under the able direction of Coaches Conti, Weber, Baran, and Pilato it overcame most of its stubborn opponents in seven out of ten games. The boys feel very proud of their achievements as do the many interested fans of Derry Township football games. Team cooperation rather than individual ability has resulted in an aggressive eleven. Although our first game was lost to St. Vincent, the opposition our boys displayed gave evidence of their keen teamwork on the gridiron. ln the next game the Eagles led with a 27-7 score over Wilmerding. This team has always been a strong opponent, but with fine teamwork our squad took an V early lead and kept it throughout the game. The powerful strength of German Township's squad overcame the Golden Eagles with a 25-0 score. But the following week we subdued Youngwood with a lead of 51-6. The Homestead Steelers lost to us 19-6. Our game with Hurst won us a score of l2-7. 60 Row 'I-Campbell, Mazurek, Sam- po, Wahala, Koskey, Law- Row 2-Perna, Tornavacca, Goz- , , 1 Uamity ?oot6all After our defeat last year at the hands of Sewickley Township, the Golden Eagles this time went determinedly onto the gridiron and came out victoriously with a shining writeup of 20-6. Our most discouraging game of the season was with Glassport who beat us 20-6 and knocked us out of the W. P. I. A. L. Our Armistice day game as usual was with Latrobe whose team has always been our most bitter opponents. Our boys won an early lead and the outcome was marked for brilliant success, it ended with a score of 12-6. On November 19, at St. Vincent Stadium, Derry Township played one of the most important and highest attended games in this district. They were finally sub- dued by Blairsville, a team which was destined to become the W. P. l. A. L. class A champions. All in all our Eagles had a commendable season. Each of the boys conducted himself well on the gridiron. The speedy manner in which they worked along with their accurate passing rated well with the school. This season showed them strengthened over other years and gave promise that next year would find them even more able to eliminate some of the stronger teams scheduled to compete with them. So in closing the 1947 season we proudly wish to congratulate the boys for the commend- able record which they have achieved. Its first game with St. Vincent was lost to that team with a score of 28-53. The game with Lig- onier and the return game with St. Vincent ended more favorably when the Eagles clinched both with a mark-up of 36-22 and 30-29 respectively. Our ioys were damp- ened in the next seven games when Derry beat us 35-53, Ligonier 21-31, Latrobe 30-40, Blairsville 26-43, Scotdale 28-51, Jeanette 30-58, and North Huntingdon 34-50. In the next game when we competed with Greensburg resulting in a 34-31 triumph for the Eagles, our spirits soared-but only for that game. Again in the next seven engagements with Hurst, Derry, Latrobe, Blairs- ville, Scottdale, and Jeanette and North Huntingdon ours was a frustrated team for each resulted in a loss of 29-33, 33-34, 36-40, 26-32, 21-39, 29-68 and 40-51 res- pectively. Our record this season is far from favorable but our Golden Eagles are learning their weaknesses. While we've been checking on our own weak points we've ben keeping an eye on the strong ones of our chal- lengers. Its requirements are a chal- lenge to each young man who participates in scholastic sports. Membership to the Monogram Club can be gained only by having earned a letter in some sport, or as a manager or cheer- leader. Jackets are awarded the boys at the completion of their senior year and letters are given to all members. Cooperation, sportsmanship and friendship are the club's basic qualities. It is one of fthe most exclusive and honorable clubs in our school. lt tends to promote better understanding among the lettermen and faculty. Rah! Rah! Rah! Derry Township. The cheerleaders are a group of peppy boys and girls, who helped out in the many victories by stimulating the crowds in send- ing forth cheers to the players of our team. The weather, either rain or shine, does not stop them, for they are always urging the team on to vic- tory. They grace the field, donned in blue and gold uniforms. Two new freshmen boys were added to the group, to make the number of cheerleaders an even six. These six were picked by Miss Brindle under whose guidance they have performed quite well. Everyone has agreed that the cheer- leaders are a necessity to the morale of the team. 1 1 ,XA iss? k kj' 'Q ai? W If Y f K W., + ..
