Mr. Geist Supervising Principal HIGH SCHCJOL PRINCIPAL ADMINISTRATICN SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL Although the Board of Education has to Work out collectively a solution for many difficult or perl plexing problems during the year, Mr. Geist. is prob- ably the one individual upon whose shoulders falls the greatest amount of responsibility for the smooth functioning of our schools each day of the year. lt is his duty to recommend the need for repairs cr the purchase of necessary school supplies. He must see t.o it that the bus schedules are ar- ranged for and carried out. He must supervise and direct the teachers in the various schools. If a teacher is sick or cannot pre- form his duties Mr. Geist must secure a substitute teacher until the regular teacher is able to resume his duties. Payrolls, retirement funds, budgets, taxes, teacher institutes, daily attendance, and discipline are just a few of the many daily problems which may confront our supervising principal in carrying out the duties of his ofiice. I Mr. Coulter, our principal, is a familiar figure to every member of our student body. Although he is a quiet forceful type of man few people realize the great amount of responsibility resting upon him and his office. The principaI's oflice is the hub from which all of the spokes of the educational Wheel of our school radiate. From his office comes t.he plans, suggestions, as- sistance, and encouragement for the various curricular and extra-curricular activities in our school. Class schedules, musicals, clubs, plays, athletic contests, and many other problems occupy his time and tax his ability daily. In addition to the purely mechanical and routine daily matters to be settled he must also serve as a counselor and adviser to many students who present special personal problems to him. In all of these capacit.ies he serves with the un- seliish and tolerant attitude of a true educator and friend of the high school student. Mr. Coulter, B.S., M.Ed. Principal Page Eleven

ADMINISTRATION s THE BOARD OF EDUCATION H. H. ALLISON ..,.......... .... P resident H. E. SHAW, Cnon-memberj .. Secretary C. C. PERNA ..n........... Treasurer H. D. SHORT .. Member N. H. WAGGLE .. Member H. S. BYERS .,... .... M ember F. A. SCHMITT Member G. H. KESTNER .... Member On the shoulders of the Board of Edu- cation of Derry Township lies the responsibility for the efficient and effective functioning of our school sys- tem. Many and difficult are the problems which face the board members during their term of office. One of the first concerns of the board is that one of providing buildings and equipment for approximately 2,800 stu- dcnts who attend school in our district each year. This year about 2,000 pupils were enrolled in the elementary schools while 710 attended the high school. Not only is it necessary for the board to provide a suitable building for students but heat, light, books, and other supplies, as well as a competent teacher must be provided. The matter of transportation for stu- dents is a major problem faced by the school board each year. Approximately 700 students from both the elementary and the high school are hauled to and from their respective buildings each day of the school term. To maintain this system of transportation buses must be purchased and kept in repair, drivers must be hired and supervised, and finally supplies and accessories must be renewed frequently. Not only is it important for the hoard to furnish a proper place and to provide means of getting students to that place but it is more important for them to furnish a well trained and coni- petent teacher in order that the students may receive the educational opportu- nities due them. ln our system this year there were 70 elementary teachers and 20 high school teachers employed in the busi- ness of teaching and developing better citizens for our community, state, and nation. In addition to the 90 regular teachers employed several supervisors are also used for music, art, and writing. Buildings, books, other supplies, t.ransportation, teachers, and administra- tors all are necessary and all cost money which in turn the school board must find means of providing for each school year. To provide for the Hnancial means of conducting our schools the board must make up a budget and determine the school millage necessary to bring in the required money in the form of taxes. This sum, along with the sum received as the state's share of the financial re- sponsibility of educating our future citizens, must be expended by the board in a careful and wise manner if our schools are to be maintained on a levcl with other schools in Pennsylvania.
