ADMINISTRATION s THE BOARD OF EDUCATION H. H. ALLISON ..,.......... .... P resident H. E. SHAW, Cnon-memberj .. Secretary C. C. PERNA ..n........... Treasurer H. D. SHORT .. Member N. H. WAGGLE .. Member H. S. BYERS .,... .... M ember F. A. SCHMITT Member G. H. KESTNER .... Member On the shoulders of the Board of Edu- cation of Derry Township lies the responsibility for the efficient and effective functioning of our school sys- tem. Many and difficult are the problems which face the board members during their term of office. One of the first concerns of the board is that one of providing buildings and equipment for approximately 2,800 stu- dcnts who attend school in our district each year. This year about 2,000 pupils were enrolled in the elementary schools while 710 attended the high school. Not only is it necessary for the board to provide a suitable building for students but heat, light, books, and other supplies, as well as a competent teacher must be provided. The matter of transportation for stu- dents is a major problem faced by the school board each year. Approximately 700 students from both the elementary and the high school are hauled to and from their respective buildings each day of the school term. To maintain this system of transportation buses must be purchased and kept in repair, drivers must be hired and supervised, and finally supplies and accessories must be renewed frequently. Not only is it important for the hoard to furnish a proper place and to provide means of getting students to that place but it is more important for them to furnish a well trained and coni- petent teacher in order that the students may receive the educational opportu- nities due them. ln our system this year there were 70 elementary teachers and 20 high school teachers employed in the busi- ness of teaching and developing better citizens for our community, state, and nation. In addition to the 90 regular teachers employed several supervisors are also used for music, art, and writing. Buildings, books, other supplies, t.ransportation, teachers, and administra- tors all are necessary and all cost money which in turn the school board must find means of providing for each school year. To provide for the Hnancial means of conducting our schools the board must make up a budget and determine the school millage necessary to bring in the required money in the form of taxes. This sum, along with the sum received as the state's share of the financial re- sponsibility of educating our future citizens, must be expended by the board in a careful and wise manner if our schools are to be maintained on a levcl with other schools in Pennsylvania.
