Dragons Action dl' N . E ., .. WHA. XD mf. -- round Derb Activities play a large role in the student life at Derby Junior High. They reflect the participation and school spirit that all Derby students have. This year, the students have produced plays, shows and dances, and with their attendance at these events have made this year outstanding. Last spring, cheerleading tryouts were held to choose 10 girls to lead our teams onto victory. These girls were Betty Blackwood, Linda Conn, Becky Farr Qcaptainj, Barb Griscom fco-captainj, Carol Hutcheson, Lynn Keller, Connie Ruggles, and Jane Spokes. It was decided that two alternates should join the regular squad of 8 and they were Debbie Mazur and Nancy Walker. Much of their time was spent raising money for new unifomis which had been ordered last spring. Their largest project was the Christmas Dance "The Holly Hop", a big success. They showed their superb ability when cheering at football, basket- ball, swim meets, and pep assemblies. Let's hope next year's girls prove to be as enthusiastic and co-ordinated as this years were. This year, the water ballet, which is always a very important organization here at Derby, put forth much effort in order to produce a great swim show. After months of seven A.M. and Wednes- day night practices, the girls and a proud Miss Jeanne presented "The Trade Parade". The show ran three nights, each night having large crowds. The show was wonderful and the water- ballet would like- to take this opportuni- ty to thank Miss Jeanne. I D1-am In The Alley Actors have mixe d feelings about play. WASBBI :,l xg!!! .A V ,I vi L Q" 'Q' eq x Q1 I-ldv Interpretation of "The Alley" by Reginald Rose started as a class exercise in oral reading, but within six weeks it became a stage production. Garbage cans and wooden crates served as the impressionistic setting for Frankie Dane, the tough, angry leader of the Hornets gang, and his vengeful plot to kill Mr. McAllister. Miss Grubb gives last minute suggestion for the play. Two local hoods hang around Mr. Gioia's can- dy store. All is not roses in the production of a play but the end result is great. This year the Publications Staff was supervised by Mary Totten, an English teacher here at Derby. The staff consisted of Patti Abbot, Marcia Barnes, Sue Brandon, Sue Brown, Nancy Crews, Jackie Curtis, Lori Dibble, Barb Gruschow, Carol Hutcheson, Lynn Mattson, Debbie Mazur, Bill McCall, Jon Neiger, Peggy O'Neil1, Debbie Rambie, Dean Rennell, Cynthia Stickel, Grete Sirnion, Richard Straub, and Hal Yarbrough. Annually we work earnestly to publish the Emeritus, the Chimera, and a school newspaper, the Dateline. During the past year we have been very active in the student and school board press conferences. Once a month several of the students from each publication class in the Birmingham Schools meet with Superintendant John Blackhall Smith. Students bring up the current problems, and the board and the students try to resolve or eliminate them. In November of 1967, we were fortunate enough to be invited to Groves High School to a panel discussion with five prominent negroes of the Detroit Area. Problems discussed included open-housing and the Detroit Riots. The Publications Class of 1968 wishes to thank Miss Totten for lending us her valuable time and effort. Without her assistance the publication of this yearbook would have been impossible.
