Kramer, and orchestra conductor, Victor H. Hickman, Derby's instrumental music department is constantly busy preparing numbers for various playing engage- ments. The orchestra and advanced band present the Christmas and Spring concerts in conjunction with the vocal department. Proceeds from these fine per- formances are used for the purchase of new equip- ment and the cleaning of robes and uniforms. In ad- dition the band and orchestra take part in the annual Michigan Band and Orchestra festivals. The groups were graded according to ability and performance. Band I returned in victory after receiving a final rating of first Division. They were then eligible for the All-State festival held in Ypsilanti, and did nearly as well there. The orchestra, however, was not as fortunate. They were given a second divi- sion rating which did not qualify them for the state competition. Several individuals also vied for honors in the Solo and Ensemble Festival held in early April. All grade levels of string players are repre- sented in the orchestra, while only the more adept wind musicians may apply. Band II members, all seventh graders, practice for chairs next year in Band I, which consists of proficient eighth and ninth grade students. Mr. Hickman. Skills were improved and new techniques introduced. Vicki Babbin was president oi the group, assisted by Beth Carney, vice-president, Anne Hupman, secretary, and Diane York, treasurer. In addition to projects, the students planned field trips to study artwork in other areas. Nancy McKinnie, vice-president, Dale Ann Winnie, secretary, and Debby Waters, treasurer, assisted president Jerry Williams in directing the many activitiesof the Dramatics Club. Besides participating in skits at club meetings, the club took part in plays, and was in charge of make-up for the school variety show. Mrs. Samanen and Miss McKay acted as club advisors.
