Q gm., , D . . l I Derby Junior High is a most important in- fluence on the life of its students. The seventh, eighth and ninth grades are years of transition for the early adolescent. Derby offers an at- mosphere for growth in academics and personal adjustment. The seventh grader arrives bewildered. The ninth grader leaves, a more polished student who has found interests he will follow for the rest of his life. The CYCLE staff has attempted to catch the mood of scholarship, activity and friendship found here. o fi! L I MR. BURCHYETT The mood of scholarship, activity and friend ship found at Derby has been made possible through the help of our principal, Mr. James A. Burchyett. We are proud of our principal for his fair- ness and friendliness throughout his years at Derby. lj i It X . 1+--14 ff Mr. Elya Ass. Principal IQHQ. Not as important as schoolwork, but vital nevertheless, for we must have sound bodies to go with strong minds. Those of us who have participated in an ath- letic activity of any kind this year, are undoubt- edly aware of the fine athletic program we have here at Derby. It is to those who have given so much of their time and effort, both coaches and players, that this section of the yearbook is dedicated. , V Z , .. ME J., , l, , . Prior to the all-star games, the squad was divided into two teams for the intramural schedule with Barnum and Groves. Team Number One lost its first encounter 13-0, at Pierce Field. It later emerged tri- umphant after extracting a hard fought 7-0 victory in its second game. Barnum was the opponent each time. Both touchdowns in this game were scored by Vince Rogers. The game was marked by the excellent play of Derby's squad, both in the line and backfield. Two weeks later Derby met Barnum in a game that, like the first, was played on the field at Seaholm. Two first period touchdowns seemed to dampen Derby's spirit as Barnum won by a shutout, 14-0. Here, however, Bamum the Derby passer to no avail, as the quarterback has sufficient time to the aerial successfully. Jeff Pardee is shown here kicking to Barnum in a ninth grade game at Pierce Field. Barnum emerged the victors 7-o. , Derby 's eighth grade football team, de- spite the capable direction of Coach Gott- chalk, experienced a poor season in '59 and '60, notching a tie and a loss in the all-star competition. Prior to the all-star games the squad was divided into two teams for the intramural campaign, each team playing a total of three games. Unfortunately the eighth graders emerged winless from these contests. In the first all -star game Derby lost a hard -fought 7 -0 decision to Groves. Two weeks later Derby returned, this time de- termined to break into the win column. The teams played well, shown by the fact that they held Barnum scoreless, but a combina- tion of good defensive work by Barnum and a slippery turf, stifled Derby's bid, and we were forced to settle for a scoreless tie in the season's finale. These girls put forth great effort and enthusiasm this year in leading the crowds at all football and basketball games , While cheering their team on to victory. The squads, captained by Jeanne Williams in the eighth grade and Pat Fairbanks in the ninth, did a marvel- ous job. The cheerleaders , along with the pep club, also sponsored the pep rallies that took place this year. The pep club, besides being co-sponsor of the pep rallies , also performed many other functions. They came to all the home games, and to the all-star contests played at the high school. In addition, the pep club originated and backed the Red-and-White days . The cheerleaders, along with the pep club, did a fine job this year in giving moral support to the teams , and were in part re- sponsible for the fine seasons enjoyed by the teams this year at Derby. The ninth grade schedule was divided into two parts. For the intramural campaign the squad was also divided, each of the two teams playing four games, all with Barnum, our cross-town rival. The end of this part of the schedule found Team One with a 2-2 record and Team Two with three wins and one loss. The All-star season began on a happy note as Derby defeated Lamphere, 37-19. In the next game, which was played at home like the first, Derby overwhelmed Clarenceville, 55- 22. On the 17th of February Derby engaged Bloomfield in a contest played on Derby's court. Derby squeeked by, 49-47, in this thriller. Jack Harvey paced the team with 15 points. Two days later Derby played Clarenceville on the latter's floor. Derby completely out- played and outscored the Trojans, 73-20, for our highest tally of the year. The climax of the season came as Derby played Barnum at Seaholm. It was tight all the way, but a superior Derby team emerged victorious, 35-30, to win the city champion- ship. Jack Harvey was again high point man with 13. The eighth grade had a schedule almost 'identical to the ninth, with both intramural and all-star seasons. In the intramural campaign Derby eighth grade teams had an 8-2 mark, with the first team going lmdefeated. The all-star season opened as Derby de- feated Rochester, 26-24, in a contest played on the latter team's court. Subsequent victories over Lamphere and Rochester, both played at Derby, preceded the first of two games to be played at Seaholm. In the first of these games Derby came through with a 23-21 victory over Groves, as Bob Heavenrich scored with less than a min- ute to go to give Derby the win. Ken Skover took high point honors with 8. Derby then defeated Lamphere .ai Lamphere 29-11, in a warm-up for the Barnum game. The Barnum game, which was the second contest the eighth graders played at Seaholm, was won by Derby, 40-34. It was a thriller, as are all Barnum games. The 7th graders had two strictly seventh grade meets, both with Bar- num. They won the first, 62-24, at home , before sweeping the second at Barnum, 43-30. In addition they participated in five 7th and 8th grade meets , and in the only 7th, 8th, and 9th grade meet of the season. The eighth graders , who teamed with the seventh grade all year, al- so did well. In the first of these combined meets Derby emerged vic- torious by the score of 53-25 over Fitzgerald. They also defeated Bar- num twice, 67-20 and 57-20, before downing Pierce 46-32, and Fitz- gerald again, 46-28, in a rematch held in Fitzgerald's pool. The ninth grade had five meets in addition to the aforementioned 7th, 8th, and 9th grade contest, After losing their first match, the ninth graders outswam Kimball, 52-34, in a meet held in Derby's pool. This victory was followed by triumphs over Barnum, 36-12, Kimball again, and Barnum once more, this time 35-12. In the combined meet with Groves, Derby swept to a 53-33 win. The superiority of this years crop of tankers at Derby is reflected in the fact that in 1959-60, Derby swimmers took 82 firsts, while all their opponents combined amassed only 20. Due mainly to this fact, Derby outscored the opposition, 630 to 358. On top of all this, they took 23 out of 27 possible firsts in the all-city meet. In addition, 15 new re- cords were set this season. 53 Having completed his approach, Mark Liver- more, is seen here beginning his jump in good form. Track - Game of Speed Derby's ninth grade track team experienced an- other fine season in 1959, winning seven meets , while not suffering a loss. This is the fourth year in a row that the ninth grade team has been undefeat- ed. The eighth graders , although not undefeated, also had a good year in '59. While their record was 5-2, this squad, according to their coach, Mr. Vavruska, Showed greater improvement than any other Derby team. This is reflected in the fact that they climax- ed their season with a victory in the all-city meet to become city champions at their level. The seventh grade team also did well in 1959, sporting a 5-1 mark for their efforts. The lone de- feat, unfortunately, came in the all-city meet, which deprived the seventh graders of the city crown. With such a fine record in 1959, and with so many otential stars , the future for 1960 certainly looks right. This group, coach- ed by Miss Jearme, meets once a week, usually on Thursday nights , to prac- tice their intricate maneu- vers , and is composed of the best girl swimmers in T our school. Any girl who participates in water ballet has to be a strong swimmer. In addi- tion, it is necessary that she be very adept at per- forming stunts in the water. 5 g This year the group has . over thirty members. Each May these girls ' present a show, which takes place in the Derby Pool. This year the theme is that 15a of a Mexican Fiesta, with the swimmers entertaining their audience with their feats of skill. An admission is charged, and the proceeds are used . to buy something the school needs . Girls' Swimming Carrying on the swimming tradition es- tablished by the boys' swimming teams, many Derby girls trained and competed with the Birmingham Swim Club this past fall. Nancy Nadal was the State's Junior Butterfly Champion, and Nancy Wilson was runner-up to the State Junior Champion in the 100 yard freestyle. Martha Russ and Nancy Walls were seldom defeated in their breaststroke events. These girls proved to be four of the outstanding girl swimmers in Michigan. These four, along with Jackie Bacon, Donna Richardson, Marilyn Perry, Linn Harvie, Sue Savage, Laura Hayes , Linda Thomsen, Pamela Terry, Ginny Walls , Judy Savage, Katrina Beneker, and Col- leen O'Halloran, combined to compete a- gainst such well established teams as Wo- men's City Club, Ann Arbor Swim Club, and Turners of Detroit in Dual and Cham- pionship Swimming Meets. When the six league teams competed for State Junior Championship honors , these girls , by far the best swimmers in Derby, garnered enough points for a third place finish be- hind Women's City Club and Ann Arbor. Cafeteria Acflvlfles Activities and the Variety of clubs offered at Derby play an important part in the life of a Derby student. Almost everyone belongs to one of these clubs, be it athletic, academic, or artistic. Clubs allow us to acquire new interests and if to perfect our skills. By participating in the activities of a club we have chosen, we not only discover new friends but we also gain confi- dence in ourselves through working with others. Student Council The Student Council 's main function is to promote the general welfare of Derby Junior High. With Mr. Keller as advisor this group has: sponsored several major dances with the proceeds of two donated to the band for new uniforms, maintained an announcement board in the lobby, and has certainly given its members a fuller sense of re- sponsibility.
