V , . . . 3 We started our Junior year with a n w faculty They were Superintendent Mr J'ohn MCGIIVTCY Principal Mr Carl Varner lnstructor Miss Florence Goble Our class officers for the year were President Carroll Toll Vice Yresxdent Jerry Frantz Secretary Georgia Teater Treasurer Fred D attxlzo Our class sponsor was Mr Varner Our class play was given OctoberZ3rd The Antics of Andrew was held in Kirk s Hall This h1lar1ous comedy was coached by Mr McG11vrey and the whole class had a wonderful time producing it Ve then began to plan for the big event of the year the Junior Senior Banquet which was held at the Country Club near Charlton on May the 7th school hoping to make this our last year in Derby High School Three new members were added to our teaching staff and Mr Varner became Superintendent They were Mrs Dorothy Varner Miss Jennie Pell and Mr Floyd W Lancaster Our class officers were President Jerry Frantz Vice President Fred D attilio, Secretary Rolland Funk, Treasurer Betty Neal Mr Varner was our class sponsor Mr Cochran came down from Des Moines and took our class pictures We were all quite pleased with the results We gave our Senlor Class Play Love Inc on April Z9 1949 which was coached by Mrs Dorothy Varner The Juniors honored us with the annual J'un1or Senior Banquet on May lOth Baccalaureate Services were held at the Methodist Church on May 15th We said a sad but cheerful good by on May the 16th 1949 when we received our diplomas at the Commencement Exercises May we tak this opportunity to thank all of our teachers who so graciously helped us through our high school years 9 With only nine of our pupils left and one new girl, Betty Neal, we started to C LASS PROPHEC Y As I was makmg my campaign tour through the Unxted States whxle I was runmng for Pres1dent I happened to run across all of my old classmates back at Derby I-hgh My fxrst stop was at Madxson Square Garden one mght when there was a champxonshxp bout scheduled To my surprlse who walked mto the rmg but Jerry Frantz who was defendmg hxs tltle agamst the Ape Man from Brazll Jerry has knocked out Joe Louxs xn the fmrst round and won the Heavywexght boxxng crown My next stop was at a lxttle town m Indlana and I saw one of my sure voters Georgxa Teater happzly marrled to her fourth husband who ran a glue factory I stopped off in Derby next and paid a v1s1t to my old pal Rlchard Halferty who was a very successful farmer near Derby Rxchard was st11l a bachelor but had many prospects My next stop was ln Denver Colorado where I saw Ferne Davenport who was a successful busmesswoman She ran a publxshzng company and had just pubhshed a book t1tled 'How to Catch a Husband wluch she had wrxtten It had become a beat seller Due to a strxke of tram engmeers I was detamed for a t1me m Portland Oregon where I saw my old schoolmate Darl Wolett Darl hved ln the heart of the paper pulp mdustry and was makmg good use of lt He had a paper pulp factory and speclahzed m makmg paper napkms and toothp1cks I boarded a bus and headed for Cahforma and stopped at the Muroc Alr Base for a whzle As I was drmlung a cup of coffee m a cafe a sorry lookmg fmgure hobbled an It was none other than Carroll Toll a test pxlot He had flown some new Jets better than three thousand miles per hour He was nn the group of hand plcked men who were to make a rocket trxp to the moon I came back through Oklahoma and vxewed the o1l wells There I saw an old frzend Rolland Funk who was to become a college professor but changed h1s mmd and had a part txme Job of greaslng bmcycles zn Tulsa My next stop was ln North Carolxna where I saw Betty Neal who was happlly married and whose husband ran a tobacco farm Betty spent her lexsure hours twxstmg tobacco leaves xnto cxgars It was gettxng close to electmn tune and I headed back for the capxtol 1n Washxngton When I arrxved and started up the steps I met an old schoolmate Kenneth Patrxe cormng down the steps I saw hxm almost every day because had become a great sclentlst and was an expert on Nuclear Fxsslon Fred D attlho 10 I . .
