'58 24 Senion Claw -Hi ton 1 Entering high school was a big adventure for 169 scared freshmen in 1954. The babies of the high school quickly became accustomed to the new life they were leading. Elected to guide the class through this year of trial and error were: President, Larry Roberts; Vice-President, Marlene Maxey; Secretary, Linda Buckner; Treasurer, Jack Gor- don; and Student Council, Jackie West. On Initiation Day, the seniors officially welcomed this freshman class into Derby High School. This day was not easily forgotten. Wails of I wish I were a senior floated through the school as freshmen bowed to the command of a senior. Hannah Thompson and Gerald Human were judged best-dressed in an initiation assembly. This was not an easy decision to make, however; all the boys were neatly dressed in their mother's nightgowns, and all the girls wore their father's pajamas. Shirley McBride, Jackie West, and Bobbe Hankla were elected freshman cheerleaders; they made a fine representation of the class. Many members of the class were cast in the all-school play, The Little Shepherd of Kingdom come . The year was closed with a picnic at Linwood Park, which provided fun and excite - ment. The Panther's Tale quoted Sharon High saying, It was a nice picnic; everyone got hurt. The Sophomore Class of 1955-56 felt very sophisticated as they watched the new fresh- men scurrying around, trying to find classes. No longer the youngest members of high school, they believed themselves to be finally growing up. The leaders elected by the class were: President, Larry Roberts; Vice-President, Mar- lene Maxey; Secretary, Carole Dickson; Treasurer, Fred Wheeler; Student Council, Connie Keeler. The class was honored to have three sophomore girls, Marlene Maxey, Shirley Me Bride, and Carole Dickson, chosen to represent the school as cheerleaders. A magazine sale to raise money was sponsored by 160 enthusiastic sophomores. Heading the trying junior year were: President, Beverly Hamilton; Vice-President, Marlene Maxey; Secretary, Carole Dickson; and Treasurer, Larry Roberts. In a general election, Marlene Maxey was elected head cheerleader, and Carole Dickson again became a member of the squad. The Junior Class felt honored to have Connie Keeler reign as Football Homecoming Queen; Marlene Maxey attended her. Basketball season was climaxed by the crowning of the Basketball Queen, with Carole Dickson attending. A humorous presentation of Father Knows Best , the Junior Play, was presented De- cember 11, 1956. A cast party was held following the evening. A sign of relief came trom 124 anxious juniors when the Junior-Senior Prom was held on April 12, 1957. Moonlight and Roses was the mood set for the Prom, which was held at the Trig Ballroom. Reigning over the Prom were Queen Susie Gilbertson and King Ernie Pearce. Attending the king and queen were: Roger Van Horn, Law anna Steele; Otto Beck, Dollie Owens; Kenny Belisle, Sherry Wright; Larry Roberts, and Joyce Davis. Leaders of the high school! This was a worthy title held by the Senior Class of 1957-58. Guiding this all-too-important year were: President, Carole Dickson; Vice-President, Bill Gregory; Secretary, Marlene Maxey; Treasurer, Larry Roberts; Student Council, Connie Keeler and Lawanna Steele; Safety Council. Sharon High. Head cheerleader was the honor confened on Carole Dickson. Marlene Maxey began her third year of cheerleading for Derby. Lawanna Steele was chosen as one of tne majorettes. Editing the school paper, the Panther's Tale , was Donna Wilson. Beverly Hamilton was editor-in-chief of the 1958 annual. Leading the Student Council was President Larry Roberts. Joyce Davis became National Secretary for Future Business Leaders of America at a convention held in Dallas, Texas. During the Winfield football game, Carole Dickson was crowned Football Home- coming Queen by King Kenny Beiisle. Attendants Marlene Maxey and Donna Wilson were escorted by Larry Roberts and Bill Macy. Donna Wilson headed the basketball royalty. She was crowned queen by King Bill Macy. Attendant Marlene Maxey was escorted by Stanton Wells; Jerry Goodson was the other escort. The school was very pleased when Kenny Belisle, right halfback, was chosen for the All-State gridiron squad. Reigning over the Yearbook Signing Party was Queen Dollie Owens. After graduating from Derby High School, a bright future lay ahead for 113 seniors. The end before the beginning .
