The show must go on and so must rehearsals At last we had reached the peak of our hlgh school career our fourth and most lmportant year Mr Heffernan gave us our welcomlng speech telllng us of our lmportance 1n hlgh school th1s year and of the example we were to set for the under classmen Then classes were ass1gned and we departed ready to come back the next day to begln work Thls was to be a year of many new happenlngs at Derby H1gh The g1rls flnally got thelr long awalted gym teacher Mlss Barrett who was young enough to keep up w1th them mall thelr act1v1t1es Another new teacher was Mr Mas replaclng Mr Llpka who had accepted a teachmg pos1t1on ln Turkey A 1958 Hudson was donated by Stahls for the newly establlshed Dr1vers Educatlon Program under the superv1s1on of Mr Martone htred to teach thls subject Because of the ever growlng freshman classes we were pr1v1leged to have another Home Economlcs teacher M1ss Molslck to asslst Mrs Botsford 1n th1s f1eld Mr Natale who f1lled the vacancy created when Mr Starbard reslgned became our new band dlrector Along w1th the new members of the teachlng staff Joan Fasclano Jolned our class transferrlng from Ansonla H1gh School Our flrst off1c1al bus1ness of the year was to elect class offlcers Joseph Emma became our Presldent Joan Wakeman V1ce Presldent Georgla McCormack Secretary and Arnold Palmucc1 Treasurer Shortly afterward the Student Counc1l elected the1r off1cers they were Joan Wakeman Presldent Robert Gorman V109 Presldent and Rosalmd Cafasso Secretary Treasurer Marllyn Block Margaret Rossett1 Mary Ann Tagl1avento Joseph Emma Rose Marle Romano Arnold Palmuccl and Georg1a McCormack represented our class on the Student Counc1l The band also elected offlcers forthe year Ronald Nappl became PTGS1 dent Dane Hassan VICE Presldent and Georgla McCormack Secretary Treasurer Other members of the band were Henry Svehlak Fred Rlng Pasquale Romano Mary G1ant1s Arlene Lanzlerl and Florence Whltten The Cheerleaders who had been worklng hard all summer kept the Pep Club up to par by teachmg them the new cheers and songs for the comlng football season The offlcers of the Pep Club were Joan Wakeman Presldent Margaret Rossett1 Secretary Mary Lou Klrouac Treasurer and Maureen K1ley Senlor Reporter Those cheerleaders who w1ll hand down thelr umforms at the end of the year are Joan Wakeman Margaret ROSSett1 Marllyn Block Jo Ann Tamlnsky and Demse Dorslo Some lucky Junlor g1rls w1l1 be the rec1p1ents of majorette unlforms handed down by Georgla McCormack Joyce C1r1llo Carolyn Kopec Glor1a Cuomo Mary Ch1lds and Darlene Dlmon Football season then took hold of everyone and the rah' rah' rahs' were heardthroughout the season Our class was well represented wlth Pasquale Gullano and Frank Bunosso as Co Captams other members of the team were Joseph Moore Joseph Loverrnl Joseph Scarpa R1chard Culrno Edward Coppola Joseph Emma Robert Gorman Arnold Palmuccl Joseph Kapusta and Kenneth O Donnell These boys had a very good season commg through w1th a three way t1e for the Housatonlc League Champlonshlp However the most outstandlng v1ctory was the 20 to 6 w1n over Shelton on Thanksg1v1ng Day Th1s v1ctory the f1rst over our arch rlval 1n twelve years not only gave us the beaut1ful Blumenthal Trophy but put our class down 1n the h1story of Derby H1gh School These boys along w1th the1r coaches Mr M1kU11CS Mr Palmuccl Mr Vltello and Mr Martone can certalnly be proud of a Job well done Joseph Loverml won Thanksglvmg Day Game Most Valuable Player Award' donated by the Mutual Loan Company of Derby The Pow Wow under the gu1dance of our semor co ed1tors Rosalmd Cafasso and Mary Ann Tagllavento and thelr very eff1c1ent staff was 1ssued on November 27th and was well recelved by all Once aga1n the curta1ns opened on the Derby H1gh stage to reveal the Very able cast of actors and actresses 1n the never to be forgotten senlor 1 . play See1ng Double Those who took part were Dorls Luc1ano Mar1lyn Block James Kozak Barbara Ryan Joan Wakeman Rosal1ndCafasso Arlene Lanz1er1 Eleanore Sobln Maureen Klley Margaret Rossett1 Mary Lou Klrouac Paullne Genga and Henry Svehlak These pople d1d afme Job 1n portraymg the1r parts under the able d1rect1on of M1ss Ehzabeth Dempsey Joseph Kapusta and W1ll1am Lawler set up the scenery w1th the eff1c1ency of sk1lled stage hands One of the longest and probably most well attended assembl1es was the Jolnt Derby Shelton v1ctory assembly held on December ll We had many guest speakers at th1s assembly but probably the most 1mportant to us on that day was Mr Blumenthal who was to present us w1th the trophy Those who deserved congratulatlons for taklng part 1n the assembl1es throughout the year were Robert Gorman Rosal1nd Cafasso Mary Ann Tagl1avento Joseph Moore Dane Hassan and Joan Fasclano Two of the most popular clubs 1n whlch the semors held offlce were the Future Teachers and the Future Nurses Clubs The off1ces of Presldent and Treasurer respectwely 1n the Future Nurses Club were held by Mary Ann Taghavento and Joyce C1r1llo In the Future Teachers Club Mary Lou Klrouac f1lled the pos1t1on of Presldent and Eleanore Sobln Treasurer The chorus started regular rehearsals and elected offlcers r1ght away R1chard Culmo swept the Presldency of the s1ng1ng group Joyce C1r1llo the Vlce Pres1dency and Margaret Rossettl Treasury In January Rosallnd Cafasso the edltor of the Lookout rece1Ved the D A R Good C1t1zensh1p Award Dur1ng the same month we held our Sen1or Dance called June 1n January w1th Mary Ann Tagllavento and Henry Svehlak as co chalrman The dance was a great success Basketball season commenced and we were well represented wlth Ph1l1p Donofr1o ably leadmg Joseph Scarpa Joseph Trlbunella Joseph Loverm1 Joseph Emma and Joseph Moore We ended the season w1th a 9 7 record thereby qual1fy1ng for the State Tournament On May 16 our Prom the blggest soclal event of our Sen1or year was held at the New lrv1ng School The boys were clad 1nthe1r formal attlre and the glrls 1n thelr pretty gowns of pastel shades whlch blended 1n w1th the colorful array of decoratlons Much of the success was attrlbuted to the flne work of the co chatrmen Margaret Rossettl and Robert Gorman It was a n1ght to remember Soon we were ln the month of June Along w1th the excltement of our fmal exams we awa1ted the arr1val of Class Nlght whlch was held on June 9th Many thanks were glven to Rosal1nd Cafasso and Rlchard Culmo co chalrmen of th1s commlttee for thelr d1l1gent efforts 1n mak1ng th1s affa1r one that w1ll be remembered for many years to come On June 19th our goal was reallzed Graduatlonl Followlng the trad1t1on set by the prevlous class our exerclses were held outslde at Coon Hollow Park Our parents and many of our frlends attended thls 1mpress1ve commencement ceremony The speeches and addresses dellvered by the class speakers were rece1ved w1th enthuslasrn As the words of the last speaker faded 1nto the oncommg tw1l1ght our rehearsals whlch had taken four years had also come to an end Now we were ready to play our roles 1n the real product1on on the stage of l1fe ' U . ,, . . .
