of our freshman year we ant1c1pated the exc1tement and good t1mes of our sophomore year W1th summer vacat1on a thmg of the past we now looked forward to our second year of rehearsals Thlngs started rolhng 1mmed1ately Th1s year we were to mlss the SEFVICSS of two teachers who had been W1th Derby Hlgh School for many years namely M1ss Baker and Mr Wr1gley both of whom composed our Alma Mater F1ll1ng these vacancles were Mr Starbard d1rect1ng the Muslc Department and Mr D Ambruoso puttlng h1s talents to use IH the Enghsh Department The f1rst off1c1al act was the electlon of class off1cers Those chosen were Robert Gorman Pres1dent Joan Wakeman Vlce Pres1dent Norma Pastorella Secretary and Georgla McCormack Treasurer Joan Wakeman Georgla McCormack Rosallnd Cafasso Robert Gorman and Margaret Rossettl were fortunate to be chosen as representatwes to the Student Counc1l Paul Dav1s a former John Hopklns Grammar School student became a member of our class Along wlth fall came the exc1tement of the football season Those who put forth the1r best efforts for the glory of the team were Frank Bunosso Rlchard Culmo Pasquale Gul1ano Joseph Kapusta W1ll1am Lawler Peter Massa Joseph Moore Kenneth O Donnell and Arnold Palmuccl The presses were kept rolhng Wlth the ass1stance of Tedd1 Dlugoleck1 Mary Lou KIFOUHC Joyce C1r1llo and Georg1a McCormack who contr1 buted thelr talents to the Pow Wow wh1ch was 1ssued 1n October under the d1rect1on of Rosalmd Cafasso and Mary Ann Tagllavento co ed1tors Maklng llterary contr1but1ons to the Lookout were Paullne Genga Rosallnd Cafasso Rose Marle Romano and Teddl Dlugoleck1 The basketball season got under way 1n December w1th Phxllp Donofrlo Joseph Scarpa and Joseph Loverm1 representmg us on the vars1ty squad and Robert Gorman Joseph Moore and Arnold Palmucc1 scorlng polnts for the J V team Cheerlng our players on were Mar1lyn Block Denlse Dorslo Jamce Mulholland Mary M1ddendorf Peggy Rossett1 and Joan Wakeman our newly appomted J V cheerleaders In March Rosahnd Cafasso represented the sophomore class ln the annual Fanme Yudkln orator1cal contest and d1d an outstandmg plece of work Coon Hollow Park was the scene of hard play1ng as R1chard Culmo Paul Dav1s Ph1l1p Donofr1o Joseph Emma Pasquale Guhano Joseph Loverm1 Peter Massa and Robert Gorman pract1ced many hours to help our baseball team on the road to vlctory The blggest soc1al event of the year our Sophomore Dance was held 1n May It was a tremendous success and was enjoyed by all who attended Joseph Moore our class s1nger rece1ved a well rnerlted honor when he was chosen to partlclpate 1n the All State Chorus ln Hartford the ensumg school year Lake Quassapaug was the scene of our f1nal gatherlng as the class enjoyed 1ts annual p1cn1c Thls event rang down the curta1n on our second year of rehearsals. Rehearsals The mlnstrel whlch you have Just seen was 1n productlon for four years A behmd the scene v1ew would demonstrate the amount of work and preparat1on that has gone 1nto th1s m1nstrel Rehearsals wh1ch began 1n September of 1954, found agroup of rather bew1ldered freshmen s1tt1ng 1n the aud1tor1um l1sten1ng to Mr Heffernan explam our new schedule Thmgs seemed very compl1cated to us 1n the be gmmng but after a few days confus1on ln fmdmg the proper rooms and re cogmzmg our teachers we read1ly accustomed ourselves to what would be our future surroundmgs for the next four years Our f1rst duty as freshmen was the electxon of class off1cers Rosalmd Cafasso won the honor of bemg our f1rst Pres1dent whxle Joan Wakeman Ph1l1p Donofr1o and Robert Gorman held the pos1t1ons of VICE Pres1dent Treasurer and Secretary respectwely October 22 1954 was another date to be espec1ally noted On th1s day we really got 1nto the swmg of thlngs when the Student Councll sponsored the Freshman Soclal our f1rst soclal event 1n Derby Hlgh To further our enjoyment we were enterta1ned by our classmate Joan Wakeman Every one had such a pleasant t1me that a second Freshman SOC1al was g1ven a few months later By th1s tlme the football season was 1n full swmg and we were capably represented on the varslty squad by Pasquale Gul1ano and Frank Bunosso Assembl1es were a new exper1ence for us at Derby H1gh Darlene D1mon and Arlene Lanz1er1 part1c1pated 1n one of the f1rst we attended It was a talent assembly sponsored by the Student Counc1l where everyone ally well M1ss Ann Shugrue a replacement for Mr Frankhn Benolt 1n General Sclence and Mr Joseph L1pka a new math lnstructor also began the1r teachmg careers at Derby H1gh School 1n our Freshman year Soon we were 1ntroduced to the Pow Wow our school newspaper and before we knew lt Mary Lou K1rouac Rosal1ndCafasso and Tedd1 Dlugoleckl all members of our class were on 1tS staff reportmg freshman notes Another classmate Marlene McCausland also contrlbuted to the 11t erary sect1on of the Lookout the schools magazlne It seems as though at least one freshman part1c1pated 1n every act1v1ty 1n the school W1th December came basketball season and Ph111pDonofr1o was chosen to play on the varslty team Other freshman boys on the Jumor vars1ty team were Joseph Scarpa Joseph Loverm1 R1chard Culmo Joseph Tnbunella Arnold Palmucc1 Nlcholas P1cc1ott1 Ronald Napp1 Kenneth ODonnell and Dane Hassan Late 1n December our class and the J V basketball team were m1nus one classmate when N1cholas P1CC1Ott1 moved to Palmer Massachusetts The loss was soon remedled when our class welcomed two new g1rls from West Haven Glor1a Cuomo and Anne Fltzmaurlce Thmgs were progressmg at a steady pace and 1n the sprmg of 1955 our f1rst baseball season began Representmg our class on the baseball d1amond were Rxchard Culmo Pasquale Guhano Wayne Douglas Joseph Scarpa Paul Lombard1 Frank Schne1der Joseph Kapusta Robert Gorman Joseph Emma and Peter Massa When the season ended we found that our f1rst year at Derby H1gh had also termlnated As we departed for summer vacatlon wxth happy memor1es I , . . . , . . . . - I I . . . A new add1t1on to the teachmg staff was Mrs Frances Dargon our Junlor Engllsh teacher We entrusted our future to Joan Wakeman Pres1dent Joseph Scarpa Vlce Pres1dent Georgla McCormack Secretary and Arnold Palmucc1 Treasurer Durmg the f1rst few weeks as clubs and organ1zat1ons began to meet R1chard Culmo and Joyce C1r1llo were elected Pres1dent and Secretary of the Chorus respectlvely and Mary Ann Tagl1avento was chosen Treasurer of the Future Nurses Club Mr M1chael M1kul1cs 1n h1s flrst year as coach of football at Derby Hlgh lead the Ralders to a falrly successful season w1th a record of 3 4 1 Jumor members of the team were W1l11am Lawler R1chard Culmo Joseph Scarpa Joseph Loverm1 Joseph Moore Kenneth O Donnell Frank Bunosso Joseph Kapusta Pasquale Gul1ano Arnold Palmucc1 and Robert Gorman The cheerleaders who supported the team from the s1del1nes were Margaret Rossettl Joan Wakeman Marllyn Block and Jamce Mulholland The band and Majorettes dressed 1n new unlforms and under the d1rect1on of Mr Wlllard Starbard presented songs and forrnatlons between the halves of the football games w1th Ronald Napp1 Henry Svehlak Fred R1ng Florence Whltten Mary G1ant1s Arlene Lanz1er1 Dane Hassan Pasquale Romano Mary Anne Valmsky Georg1a McCormack Joyce C1r1llo Mary Chllds Glorla Cuomo Darlene D1mon and Carolyn Kopec contr1but1ng the1r talents to the entertamment As the year progressed the Student Councll met per1od1cally to dlscuss school bus1ness w1th Joan Wakeman Rose Mar1e Romano Eleanore Sob1n Mary Ann Tagl1avento Geogla McCormack Rosal1nd Cafasso Joseph Emma Edward Coppola and John DeFel1ce representmg the Jumor class Our basketball team w1th some f1ne playlng throughout the season by Ph1l1p Donofrlo Joseph Scarpa Joseph Moore Joseph Loverrm Arnold Palmuccl Joseph Tr1bunella and under the able coachmg of Mr Alphonse V1tello ended the campa1gn w1th a 10 9 won lost record When the month of February rolled around tryouts for the Jun1or Play were held My Cousm from Texas was very capably d1rected by Mrs Frances Dargon The cast lncluded Barbara Ryan Mar1lyn Block Paullne Genga Rose Mar1e Romano Joan Wakeman Joseph Scarpa Joseph Emma Ronald 'Nlappl Henry Svehlak Dane Hassan Anne F1tzmaur1ce and Glor1a Cuomo W1th m1d year exams just completed the class as a whole resolved to buckle down 1n the1r stud1es and unprove the1r marks over the last half of the year In March Anne Fltzmarulce Florence Whltten and Rosal1nd Cafasso entered the Fann1e Yudk1n Oratorlcal Contest and gave very 1nterest1ng speeches Wh1Ch contrlbuted to the success of the contest Ear11er 1n the year Joan Wakeman Paul1ne Genga Ronald Nappl and Joseph Scarpa helped enact the annual Columbus Day Assembly each relatlng an 1nterest1ng account of the l1fe of Columbus Late ln May lt was announced that Rosal1nd Cafasso Joan Wakeman Arnold Palmuccl Joseph Emma and Robert Gorman would represent the Junlor class of Derby Hlgh School at Laurel Glrls' State and Nutmeg Boys State at the Un1vers1ty of Connectlcut At the flnal assembly of the year Rosal1nd Cafasso recelved several awards for excellence 1n studxes Robert Gorman also recelved the Harvard Book Prlze wh1le Joseph Kapusta recelved the Edward Cotter Award for outstandmg performance 1n track Summer vacatlons held top pr1or1ty now butwe were all look1ng forward to the fall when we would re enter the halls of Derby H1gh as semors ' 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 - .. . 1 1 ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 ' ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 , . 1 1 1 1 1 , . as ' 11 ' ' ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 L 1 1 1 1 - 1 1 1 1 1 , . 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 . . . - 1 , l 1 1 1 1
