TEPAT Hrve you ever gazed deeply rnto your class ring' If you have you may hrvt notrced somcthrng more than just a gold shrp on a mrroon b rckground Perhaps your eyes penetrated the surface md abserved some thrng finer and more superb bet ruse rn that rrng are kept never to be destroyed trt rsrrrcd and prrtcless memories of the four yerrs of your lrfe On September 6 1944 a group of ftscrn rted young sters entered the portals of that wonderful educrtronal rnstutrtron the Derby Hrgh School We were grven a cordial welcome by Mr Heffernan who spoke to us of the prrvrleges and corresponding dutres of bcrng Derby Hrgh School students It was the first year of Mr Heffernans positron as prrncrpal and of Dr O Hara s positron as superintendent making us the first graduat rng class to complete four years under their very able yurrsdrctron One month was sufficient to remove some of our cautron but we were strll green enough to thrnk that cated The results of the electron held were as follows Presrdent joan Kirby Vrce Presrdent Elaine Colonese Secretary Henry Osak and Treasurer jacquelrne Ambrrsco Soon the unrors and Senrors presented the Fresh man Socral whrch rn that year was grven for both Freshman and Sophomores Thus we became full fledged members of the Derby Hrgh School We entered rnto the picture completely now and even began to cheer for the football team It had a farrly successful season and we were very proud to be able to say that rt was our team As Freshman we were especrally interested because one of our class mates Chubby Cafaro had made the team Our enthusrasm contrnued all through the basket ball season and rrghtly so because the team had the good fortune to enter the class B state tournament at Payne Whrtney Gymnasium Yale Unrversrty We fought our way through beautifully untrl the crushmg blow defeat by Branford rn the finals Never was the heart of every Derby follower so full of despair We shall always remember that team as our team and proudly so for rt had the qualrtres of a real team On Aprrl 7 lst the entire world was saddened by the de rth of Presrdent Franklm D Roosevelt Even as Freshmen we fully realized the srgnrhcance of hrs untrmely death There was a srlent prayer rn every heart that God would gurde us safely through the war even wrthout hrs great leadership He wrll always be remembered by all of us and we shall be proud to say that he wrs our presrdent As rf to offset the effects of this tragedy Presrdent Harry Truman our new and capable leader announced the vrctory of the allied forces rn Europe on May 8th Every peace lovrng human berng was overwhelmed with rejorcrng and thanks In une the Glee Club presented Blow Me Down an operetta rn which several Freshmen took part Mr Wrrgley found much talent rn our class We were rather downcast at the thought of losing the Senrors who had guided us through our first year We were so zealous however thrnkrng about the our Freshman year which had certainly been a brrllrant year rn the history of Derby Hrgh came to a raprd and vrvrd close At the termrnatron of our summer holiday we returned to the Derby Hrgh School this trme not drffi dent Freshmen rn a precarious srtuatron but rntellrgent experienced Sophomores' We elected for the second trme oan Krrbv as Presrdent wrth Pete Segenchuk as Vrce Presrdent acquelrne Ambrrsco as Secretary and Henry Osak rs Treasurer In football we were rather unfortunate at first By the end of the season however the team was rn full strrde We contrnued our enthusrastrc support espe cially because one of our classmates oan Kirby became a cheerleader Our cheerrng was not rn vain for though we lost to Ansonra 7 0 we routed Shelton 26 7 ln basketball vue were very unfortunate but looked ahead to the next year We attended the unror and Senior plays grvrng our enthusrastrc support wrth an eye to the future for rt would soon be our turn to occupy the stage In Aprrl another operettrr was staged The Belle of Bagdad an event of mayor importance The talent of our class , . death part of Derby HIgh seemed to dIe also He was 1 truly wonderful person No words can express our feelIngs for hIm and no amount of tIme can wrpe out our memory of hIm MIss MarIan Crontn was hIred ro teach EnglIsh I In hrs place Soon throughout the halls of our great InsrItutIon were numerous whrspers among the SCHIOIS SenIor play tryouts were comrng At once everyone began to demonstrate hIs abIlIty In the art of actrng FInally a cast was chosen For several weeks everyone worked drlrgently to make lf a finrshed productIon Unnl dress rehearsal thIngs looked rather bleak but under the skrllful supervrslon of MIss Baker we gave a superb performance It was a cast of stars Jeanne McEnerney and Peppers Preneta portrayed the lovIng If some tImes drflicult parents of DavId Grlbert and Genevreve Zyskoskr RIchard Salerno Harry Francolxnr and Mary Duggan surpassed theIr bfllllanf performances of the unIor play VInnIe Mrngrone and Phyllrs Krng were newcomers but that dId not drscredrt them In the least Arlene Karlms stole the show wIth her black face and Southern accent Helen Prekarskr gave another grand show as the tomboy In the play Gordon McLachlan our Import from Scotland pulled actIng out of hIs bag of trIcks and drd a magnIfIcent job oan Krrby and Sammy SPIICII were perfect for theIr parts Therr roles were rather small but theIr ad Ilbblng helped them out consxderably All In all If was a wonderful P aY We were rather successful In football thIs year Although we dldD t beat A050013 or Shelton we gave them qurte a scare We count them as moral vIctorIes In basketball we drd very poorly however We had three speakers representrng our class In the oratorrcal contest thIs year Angeltne DeCarlo joan Klfby and john Preneta although they dId not WID gave excellent speeches One of our teachers Mrss Trghe was struck on the head by a fallmg ladder whrle Chrrstmas decoratrons were beIng removed from the streets She was In the Grrflin I-Iosprtal for a tIme and then removed to her home We were all extremely glad to see her back and well agaIn when she returned on March lsr The D A R award for good cItIzenshIp was grven to oan Klfby thIs year Each gIrl hopes for thIs award as lf really IS an honor and somethIng of whrch to be proud Next came our Semor Assembly We dtdn t do too wtll at the fIrst attempt but when we drd gne It If was a huge success Many agreed ll was the best We had somethrng new thrs year Each class had a separate socIal Instead of the usual Freshman SocIal The SenIor Soctal wIll never be forgotten We shall always remember that event because lf concerned our class alone What dId you thmk of the junror Town Meetmg of the AIr9 Derby was Indeed honored to be chosen as the school from whIch If would be broadcast The quesnon of Inflanon was drscussed There were speakers from Derby Ansonra Shelton and Seymour joan KIrby represented Derby It was broadcast over statron WELI on March 7th There were questIons from the floor and everyone felt the Importance of the OCCZSIOH The operetta thIs year was Doctor Drlnkwater It was almost entrrely a Senror show ean Krrby Jeanne Mclinerney VIrgInIa Carroll Rtta Bergnn Marran OKeefe Harry FrancolInI DomInIck Lonardo Robert McLachlan Salvatore SpIterI DIno MIHUI Carmen Gallo all had leadIng roles The performance was a most colorful and tuneful one and made a hIt Wllh everyone Instead of havxng Class Nrght we had a Senror Ban quet It was agreed that thrs was a real Improvement as everyone had a wonderful trme Immedrately followmg came the long awaIted Sen Ior Prom The gym was attractIvely bedecked and could scarcely be recogmzed The gala affaIr wIll never be forgotten In the mrnds of the Senrors of 48 Graduatron was all that we expected The clImax of four IndustrIous frurtful years was splendrdly ter mInated and the speeches were laudable As the year drew to a close everyone notrced beneath the masks of smrles and grIns whIch every Senlor wore many srgns of melancholy and despaIr We had cer taInly had a glonous nme together durrng the last four years whrch we shall always cherIsh and remember Farewell Derby HIgh' JEAN ADAMSON PATRICIA CALDWELL JOAN KIRBY MARIO POLIFERNO , ' . t a 4. c .
